Preparation and fluorescence properties of novel 2-quinolone derivatives and their corresponding Eu(III) complexes

Iron-catalyzed synthesis of substituted 3-arylquinolin-2(1H)-ones via an intramolecular dehydrogenative coupling of amido-alcohols

Here we report an iron-complex-catalyzed synthesis of various mono- and di-substituted quinolin-2(1H)-ones achieved via the intramolecular acceptorless dehydrogenative cyclization of amido-alcohols. This approach for the synthesis of N-heterocycles has provided access to underdescribed disubstituted quinolinones and represents an alternative to the well-known palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions.

Synthesis, Photophysical Properties, Theoretical Studies, and Living Cancer Cell Imaging Applications of New 7-(Diethylamino)quinolone Chalcones

In this article, three unsymmetrical 7-(diethylamino)quinolone chalcones with D-π-A-D and D-π-A-π-D type push-pull molecular arrangements were synthesized via a Claisen-Schmidt reaction. Using 7-(diethylamino)quinolone and vanillin as electron donor (D) moieties, these were linked together through the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system acting as a linker and an electron acceptor (A). The photophysical properties were studied, revealing significant Stokes shifts and strong solvatofluorochromism caused by the ICT and TICT behavior produced by the push-pull effect. Moreover, quenching caused by the population of the TICT state in THF-H2O mixtures was observed, and the emission in the solid state evidenced a red shift compared to the emission in solution. These findings were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing the wb97xd/6-311G(d,p) method. The cytotoxic activity of the synthesized compounds was assessed on BHK-21, PC3, and LNCaP cell lines, revealing moderate activity across all compounds. Notably, compound 5b exhibited the highest activity against LNCaP cells, with an LC50 value of 10.89 μM. Furthermore, the compounds were evaluated for their potential as imaging agents in living prostate cells. The results demonstrated their favorable cell permeability and strong emission at 488 nm, positioning them as promising candidates for cancer cell imaging applications.

A minimalist fluorescent MOF sensor array for Baijiu identification

The beverage industry is in the market tuyere, and grasps the lifeline of the social economy, so it is particularly vital to supervise it. Herein, we report a minimalist fluorescence metal-organic framework (MOF) sensor array for Baijiu identification. The original MOF was modified by rare-earth elements to obtain Eu-MOFs and Tb-MOFs. They exhibited multiple fluorescence characteristic peaks in the range of 400-700 nm when excited at 325 nm. The organic molecules in the Baijiu reacted with Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF, affecting the energy transfer of the entire system and the electronic transition of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺, which were accompanied by various changes in the fluorescence intensity. For each analyte, a unique fluorescence fingerprint and heat map would be formed, which could be discriminated by pattern recognition. With this method, 11 kinds of organic molecules were identified accurately. A good stepwise bilinear function between the fluorescence intensity and concentrations of ferulic acid was obtained at 0.2-3.13 μM and 6.25-100 μM. Crucially, 16 kinds of Baijius of different brands were accurately identified with an accuracy of 100%. The sensor array showed the advantages of strong maneuverability and fast response, exhibiting good application value in Baijiu detection.

Recent Advances in One-Pot Modular Synthesis of 2-Quinolones

It is known that 2-quinolones are broadly applicable chemical structures in medicinal and agrochemical research as well as various functional materials. A number of current publications about their synthesis and their applications emphasize the importance of these small molecules. The early synthetic chemistry originated from the same principle of the classical Friedländer and Knorr procedures for the preparation of quinolines. The analogous processes were developed by applying new synthetic tools such as novel catalysts, the microwave irradiation method, etc., whereas recent innovations in new bond forming reactions have allowed for novel strategies to construct the core structures of 2-quinolones beyond the bond disconnections based on two classical reactions. Over the last few decades, some reviews on structure-based, catalyst-based, and bioactivity-based studies have been released. In this focused review, we extensively surveyed recent examples of one-pot reactions, particularly in view of modular approaches. Thus, the contents are categorized as three major sections (two-, three-, and four-component reactions) according to the number of reagents that ultimately compose atoms of the core structures of 2-quinolones. The collected synthetic methods are discussed from the perspectives of strategy, efficiency, selectivity, and reaction mechanism.
