Ca2+ dependent flocculation efficiency of avian egg protein revealed unique surface specific interaction with kaolin particles: A new perception in bioflocculant research

Production of bioflocculant from Klebsiella pneumoniae: evaluation of fish waste extract as substrate and flocculation performance

The bioflocculant producing bacterial strain - UKD24 was isolated from the domestic sewage treatment plant. The isolated strain was identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae by using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The K. pneumoniae UKD24 showed remarkable flocculation rates when grown with the carbon sources namely glucose, sucrose and lactose, and many commercial nitrogen sources. Furthermore, the fish waste extract (FE) was used to enhance the productivity of the bioflocculant as a nitrogen supplement and it showed a significant level of flocculation rate similar to the commercial nitrogen sources. The Box-Behnken experiments were designed to predict the optimal conditions for bioflocculant production and it suggested that glucose - 3.247 g L-1, FE - 0.5 g L-1 and inoculum size - 1% are the suitable levels for bioflocculant production. The FTIR analysis of the bioflocculant showed the functional groups related to the polysaccharides and the EEM analysis showed the fluorescence components related to the proteins and humic acids. The biochemical composition of the bioflocculant was identified as polysaccharides (24.36 ± 1.5%) and protein (12.15 ± 0.2%). The tested optimum conditions of the bioflocculant to induce flocculation were tested in the kaolin wastewater and it showed that the optimum dosage of the flocculant was 5 mg L-1 and the pH range was broad as 5-10. The cation dependency tests revealed that the monovalent and divalent cations are highly suitable for flocculation while the trivalent cations showed moderate flocculation. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of the bioflocculant showed that ∼35% of heavy metal is trapped into flocks during the flocculation.

Cocoyam powder extracted from Colocasia antiquorum as a novel plant-based bioflocculant for industrial wastewater treatment: Flocculation performance and mechanism

In the current investigation, the comparative study of cocoyam bioflocculant (CYBF) and chemical flocculant for the removal of heavy metals, COD, BOD, TDS, TSS, sulphate and nitrate from tannery effluent, and dyes from synthetic dye wastewater were examined. Different analytical techniques, including Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), were used to characterise the extracted bioflocculant. FTIR spectral measurement of the bioflocculant demonstrated the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups. By using bioflocculant, the highest removal of TSS (85.5%), TDS (76.2%), BOD (74%), COD (50.5%), sulphate (54.4%), nitrate (52%), Lead (65%), Chromium (60%), Nickel (57.9%), from tannery effluent was achieved at pH 6 and bioflocculant dosage of 8 mg/L. While, 80% congo red, 79% methyl orange, 73% safranin, and 72% methylene blue were removed from synthetic dye wastewater by cocoyam bioflocculant. Two flocculation mechanisms were found for dye removal, electrostatic force of attraction, and hydrogen bonding. In the case of metal adsorption, only electrostatic interactions were observed between metal ions and functional groups of bioflocculant. The cocoyam bioflocculant exhibited excellent flocculation efficacy and thus can be used in wastewater treatment to remove heavy metals and other pollutants.

Mitigation of protein fouling by magnesium ions and the related mechanisms in ultrafiltration process

Although protein is an important membrane foulant in the water body that may be significantly affected by the coexisting common cation magnesium (Mg²⁺), the effect of Mg²⁺ on protein fouling is rarely reported. In this context, this study selected bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model foulant, and investigated its fouling characteristics at different Mg²⁺ concentrations (0-100 mM). Filtration tests showed that the protein fouling can be significantly mitigated by adding Mg²⁺, and the specific filtration resistance (SFR) of pure BSA (3.56 × 10¹⁴ m kg^-1) was at least 5 times that of BSA-Mg²⁺ solutions (0.5-100 mM). In addition, an optimal Mg²⁺ concentration exists, which can achieve the lowest BSA SFR. A series of characterizations indicated that the main contributors to the differences in BSA SFR were the changes in BSA adhesion capacity and the thickness and structure of the foulant layer. Basically, the above results were attributed to the hydration repulsion effect of Mg²⁺, which prevented tight adhesion of foulants to the membrane. Moreover, the lowest BSR SFR at 1 mM Mg²⁺ was achieved not only by the hydration repulsion effect but also by the particle size compression due to the conformational change of BSA molecules. This combined effect led to the lowest foulant retention on the membrane surface and delivered to the lowest SFR. This study conducts a thorough inspection into the specific effect of Mg²⁺ on protein fouling and provides a fresh insight into protein fouling control in the UF process.

Optimized preparation and performance evaluation of a bifunctional chitosan-modified flocculant

In view of the diversification of pollutants in current sewage, further improving the application efficiency of water treatment agents and realizing multi-functionalization are important directions for the research of water treatment agents.

Recent advances and perspectives in efforts to reduce the production and application cost of microbial flocculants

Microbial flocculants are macromolecular substances produced by microorganisms. Due to its non-toxic, harmless, and biodegradable advantages, microbial flocculants have been widely used in various industrial fields, such as wastewater treatment, microalgae harvest, activated sludge dewatering, heavy metal ion adsorption, and nanoparticle synthesis, especially in the post-treatment process of fermentation with high safety requirement. However, compared with the traditional inorganic flocculants and organic polymeric flocculants, the high production cost is the main bottleneck that restricts the large-scale production and application of microbial flocculants. To reduce the production cost of microbial flocculant, a series of efforts have been carried out and some exciting research progresses have been achieved. This paper summarized the research advances in the last decade, including the screening of high-yield strains and the construction of genetically engineered strains, search of cheap alternative medium, the extraction and preservation methods, microbial flocculants production as an incidental product of other biological processes, combined use of traditional flocculant and microbial flocculant, and the production of microbial flocculant promoted by inducer. Moreover, this paper prospects the future research directions to further reduce the production cost of microbial flocculants, thereby promoting the industrial production and large-scale application of microbial flocculants.
