Efficient solar-light photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride using BiVO4/MoO3 composites

A Meta-Analysis of Influencing Factors on the Activity of BiVO4-Based Photocatalysts

With the continuous advancement of global industrialization, a large amount of organic and inorganic pollutants have been discharged into the environment, which is essential for human survival. Consequently, the issue of water environment pollution has become increasingly severe. Photocatalytic technology is widely used to degrade water pollutants due to its strong oxidizing performance and non-polluting characteristics, and BiVO4-based photocatalysts are one of the ideal raw materials for photocatalytic reactions. However, a comprehensive global analysis of the factors influencing the photocatalytic performance of BiVO4-based photocatalysts is currently lacking. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the differences in specific surface area, kinetic constants, and the pollutant degradation performance of BiVO4-based photocatalysts under different preparation and degradation conditions. It was found that under the loading condition, all the performances of the photocatalysts can be attributed to the single BiVO4 photocatalyst. Moreover, loading could lead to an increase in the specific surface area of the material, thereby providing more adsorption sites for photocatalysis and ultimately enhancing the photocatalytic performance. Overall, the construct heterojunction and loaded nanomaterials exhibit a superior performance for BiVO4-based photocatalysts with 136.4% and 90.1% improvement, respectively. Additionally, within a certain range, the photocatalytic performance increases with the reaction time and temperature.

Photocatalytic removal of imidacloprid containing frequently applied insecticide in agriculture industry using Co3O4 modified MoO3 composites

Water pollution caused by the frequent utilization of pesticides in the agriculture industry is one of the major environmental concerns that require proper attention. In this context, the photocatalytic removal of pesticides from contaminated water in the presence of metallic oxide photocatalysts is quite in approach. In the present study, Orthorhombic MoO3 has been modified with varying amount of cobalt oxide through wet impregnation for the removal of imidacloprid and imidacloprid-containing commercially available insecticide. The solid-state absorption response and band gap evaluation of synthesized composites revealed a significant extension of absorption cross-section and absorption edge in the visible region of the light spectrum than pristine MoO3. The indirect band gap energy varied from ∼2.88 eV (MoO3) to ∼2.15 eV (10% Co3O4-MoO3). The role of Co3O4 in minimizing the photo-excitons’ recombination in MoO3 was studied using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The orthorhombic shape of MoO3 was confirmed through X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the presence of distinct absorption edges and diffraction peaks corresponding to Co3O4 and MoO3 in absorption spectra and XRD patterns, respectively verified the composite nature of 10% Co3O4-MoO3. The photocatalytic study under natural sunlight irradiation showed higher photocatalytic removal (∼98%) of imidacloprid with relatively higher rate by 10% Co3O4-MoO3 composite among all contestants. Furthermore, the photocatalytic removal (∼93%) of commercially applied insecticide, i.e., Greeda was also explored.

Novel BiVO4-nanosheet-supported MoS2-nanoflake-heterostructure with synergistic enhanced photocatalytic removal of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

This paper describes a simple in-situ hydrothermal technique for the production of BiVO₄/MoS₂ binary nanocomposites as visible-light-driven catalysts. The as-prepared samples were analyzed by structural, morphological, compositional, optical, surface area, and photocurrent analyses. The lattice fringe spaces at 0.304 nm and 0.612 nm were indexed to the (112) and (002) crystal planes of BiVO₄ and MoS₂, respectively. Antibacterial photocatalytic capabilities were assessed using tetracycline (TC). Consequently, it was observed that the BiVO₄/MoS₂ nanocomposite demonstrated improved antibacterial removal ability compared with the pristine samples. The BiVO₄/MoS₂ nanocomposite exhibited 97.46% removal of TC compared with the pure BiVO₄ (43.76%) and MoS₂ (35.28%) samples within 90 min. Thus, the photocatalytic performance was observed to follow the given order: BiVO₄/MoS₂ nanocomposite > BiVO₄ > MoS₂. The removal of TC after 90 min of irradiation was approximately 97.46%, 96.62%, 95.59%, and 94.45% after the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cycles, respectively. Thus, the recycling tests revealed the stability of the photocatalyst, which exhibited a TC removal efficiency of 94.45% without distinct decay, even after the 4th cycle. According to the trapping results, hydroxyl radicals and holes were the key species and demonstrated a greater influence on the photocatalytic performance than superoxide radicals. The increased activity of the BiVO₄/MoS₂ nanocomposite may be attributed to its large surface area and tunable bandgap, which accelerate the charge-transport characteristics of the photocatalytic system. This insight and synergetic effects can provide a new approach for the development of novel heterostructure photocatalysts.

Porous activated carbons derived from bamboo pulp black liquor for effective adsorption removal of tetracycline hydrochloride and malachite green from water

As a kind of wastewater produced by papermaking industry, bamboo pulp black liquor (BPBL) discharged into water causes serious environmental problems. In this work, BPBL was successfully converted into porous carbon after activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH) through one-step carbonization, and adsorption properties of porous carbon derived from bamboo pulp black liquor (BLPC) for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and malachite green (MG) were studied. The adsorption capacities of BLPC for TCH and MG are 1047 and 1277 mg/g, respectively, due to its large specific surface area of 1859.08 m²/g. Kinetics and isotherm data are well fitted to the pseudo-second-order rate model and Langmuir model, respectively. Adsorption experiments and characterizations reveal that the adsorption mechanism involved in TCH and MG adsorption on BLPC mainly depends on the synergistic effect of pore filling, H-bonding, π-π interactions and weak electrostatic interactions. In addition, BLPC shows excellent photothermal properties, and the adsorption capacity of TCH and MG on BLPC can reach 584 and 847 mg/g under the irradiation of near infrared lamp for 50 min, respectively. The synthesized BLPC with high adsorption efficiency, good recovery ability, improved adsorption under near-infrared irradiation can be a promising and effective adsorbent for TCH or MG or other pollutes.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics by Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles. Tetracycline Case

The challenges associated with the uncontrolled presence of antibiotics such as tetracycline in the environment have necessitated their removal through different techniques. Tetracycline is hard to degrade in living organisms and can even be converted to more toxic substances. In view of this, we synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles with good magnetization (70 emu g−1) and 15 nm particle size for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline. Characterization carried out on the synthesized iron oxides revealed a bandgap of 1.83 eV and an isoelectric point at pH 6.8. The results also showed that the pH of the solution does not directly influence the adsorption of tetracycline. The adsorption isotherm was consistent with the model proposed by Langmuir, having 97 mg g−1 adsorption capacity. Combined with the superparamagnetic behavior, this capacity is advantageous for the magnetic extraction of tetracycline from wastewater. The mechanisms of adsorption were proposed to be hydrogen bonding and n-π interactions. Photocatalytic degradation studies showed that approximately 40% of tetracycline degraded within 60 min of irradiation time with UV/vis light. The kinetics of photodegradation of tetracycline followed the pseudo-first-order mechanism, proceeding through hydroxyl radicals generated under illumination. Moreover, the photogenerated hydrogen peroxide could lead to heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles, additionally generating hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl radicals and facilitating photodegradation of tetracycline.
