Drying crack patterns of sessile drops with tuned contact line

Crack-Free Structural Color Materials Prepared without Disrupting the Particle Arrangement by Controlling the Internal Stress Relaxation and Interactions of the Melanin Particles

In fabricating structural color materials with assembled colloidal particles, there is a trade-off between the internal stresses acting on the particles and the interactions between the particles during solvent volatilization. It is crucial to fabricate crack-free materials that maintain the periodic arrangements of the particles by understanding the mechanism for crack initiation. Here, we focused on the composition and additives of melanin particle dispersions to obtain crack-free structural color materials without disturbing the particle arrangements. The use of a water/ethanol mixture as a dispersant effectively reduced the internal stresses of the particles during solvent evaporation. Furthermore, the addition of low-molecular-weight, low-volatility ionic liquids ensured that the arrangement and interactions of the particles were maintained after solvent volatilization. Optimization of the composition and additives of the dispersion made it possible to achieve crack-free melanin-based structural color materials while maintaining vivid, angular-dependent color tones.

Criteria for Crack Formation and Air Invasion in Drying Colloidal Suspensions

The drying of sessile drops of aqueous colloidal suspensions leads to the formation of a close-packed particle deposit. As water evaporates, a solidification front propagates from the edge of the drop toward the center, leaving behind a thin disk-shaped deposit. For drops with sufficiently large particle volume fractions, the deposit eventually covers the entire wetted area. In this regime, the dynamics of the deposit growth is governed by volume conservation across a large range of particle volume fractions and drying times. During drying, water flows radially through the deposit to compensate for evaporation over the solid's surface, creating a negative pore pressure in the deposit which we rationalize with a hydrodynamic model. We show that the pressure inside the deposit controls both the onset of crack formation and the onset of air invasion. Two distinct regimes of air invasion occur, which we can account for using the same model that further provides a quantitative criterion for the crossover between the two regimes.

Drying-induced stresses in poroelastic drops on rigid substrates

We develop a theory for drying-induced stresses in sessile, poroelastic drops undergoing evaporation on rigid surfaces. Using a lubrication-like approximation, the governing equations of three-dimensional nonlinear poroelasticity are reduced to a single thin-film equation for the drop thickness. We find that thin drops experience compressive elastic stresses but the total in-plane stresses are tensile. The mechanical response of the drop is dictated by the initial profile of the solid skeleton, which controls the in-plane deformation, the dominant components of elastic stress, and sets a limit on the depth of delamination that can potentially occur. Our theory suggests that the alignment of desiccation fractures in colloidal drops is selected by the shape of the drop at the point of gelation. We propose that the emergence of three distinct fracture patterns in dried blood drops is a consequence of a nonmonotonic drop profile at gelation. We also show that depletion fronts, which separate wet and dry solid, can invade the drop from the contact line and localize the generation of mechanical stress during drying. Finally, the finite element method is used to explore the stress profiles in drops with large contact angles.

Patterns in Dried Droplets to Detect Unfolded BSA

The morphological analysis of patterns in dried droplets has allowed the generation of efficient techniques for the detection of molecules of medical interest. However, the effectiveness of this method to reveal the coexistence of macromolecules of the same species, but different conformational states, is still unknown. To address this problem, we present an experimental study on pattern formation in dried droplets of bovine serum albumin (BSA), in folded and unfolded conformational states, in saline solution (NaCl). Folded proteins produce a well-defined coffee ring and crystal patterns all over the dry droplet. Depending on the NaCl concentration, the crystals can be small, large, elongated, entangled, or dense. Optical microscopy reveals that the relative concentration of unfolded proteins determines the morphological characteristics of deposits. At a low relative concentration of unfolded proteins (above 2%), small amorphous aggregates emerge in the deposits, while at high concentrations (above 16%), the “eye-like pattern”, a large aggregate surrounded by a uniform coating, is produced. The radial intensity profile, the mean pixel intensity, and the entropy make it possible to characterize the patterns in dried droplets. We prove that it is possible to achieve 100% accuracy in identifying 4% of unfolded BSA contained in a protein solution.

Crack morphologies in drying suspension drops

A drop of an aqueous suspension of nanoparticles placed on a substrate forms a solid deposit as it dries. For dilute suspensions, particles accumulate within a narrow ring at the drop edge, whereas a uniform coating covering the entire wetted area forms for concentrated suspensions. In between these extremes, we report two additional regimes characterized by non-uniform deposit thicknesses and by distinct crack morphologies. We show that both the deposit shape and the number of cracks are controlled exclusively by the initial particle volume fraction. The different regimes share a common avalanche-like crack propagation dynamics, as a result of the delamination of the deposit from the substrate.
