Preparation of carboxymethyl chitosan/phytic acid composite hydrogels for rapid dye adsorption in wastewater treatment

Hydrogels comprising oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose and water-soluble chitosan at varied oxidation levels: Synthesis, characterization, and adsorptive toward methylene blue

Chitosan, as a biomaterial, has increasingly garnered attention. However, its limited solubility in water-only dissolving in certain dilute acidic solutions-substantially restricts its broader application. In this investigation, chitosan underwent a solubilization modification to acquire water solubility, facilitating its dissolution in neutral aqueous mediums. Subsequently, this water-soluble chitosan (WSC) was interlinked with oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose (OCMC), characterized by varied oxidation extents, to synthesize hydrogels. Structural characterization verified the formation of imine bonds resulting from crosslinking interactions between the amino groups of water-soluble chitosan and the aldehyde groups of oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose. Employing performance characterization analysis, it was discerned that an increase in the oxidation level of the oxidized carboxymethyl cellulose corresponded to a denser hydrogel network architecture and the hardness increased from 3.01 N to 6.16 N. Moreover, the capacity of these hydrogels to adsorb methylene blue was meticulously examined. Notably, the hydrogel denoted as WSC/66%OCMC manifested an adsorption capability of 28.08 mg/g for methylene blue. Analytical findings from adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies indicate that the adsorption mechanism of the WSC/66%OCMC hydrogel follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and corresponds to the Freundlich isotherm model.

Gels for Water Remediation: Current Research and Perspectives

The development of cost-effective and high-performance technologies for wastewater treatment is essential for achieving a sustainable economy. Among the various methods available for water remediation, adsorption is widely recognized as an effective and straightforward approach for removing a range of pollutants. Gel materials, particularly hydrogels and aerogels, have attracted significant research interest due to their unique properties. Hydrogels, for instance, are noted for their ability to be regenerated and reused, ease of separation and handling, and suitability for large-scale applications. Additionally, their low cost, high water absorption capacity, and contribution to environmental protection are important advantages. Aerogels, on the other hand, are distinguished by their low thermal conductivity, transparency, flexibility, high porosity, mechanical strength, light weight, large surface area, and ultralow dielectric constant. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current literature, highlighting gaps in knowledge regarding the classification, preparation, characterization, and key properties of these materials. The potential application of hydrogels and aerogels in water remediation, particularly in removing contaminants such as dyes, heavy metals, and various organic and inorganic pollutants, is also discussed.

Natural Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogels Used for Dye Removal

Removal of contaminants from discharge water is vital and demands urgent assistance with the goal to keep clean water. Adsorption is one of the most common, efficient, and low-priced methods used in water treatment. Various polysaccharide-based gels have been used as efficient dye adsorbents from wastewater. This review summarizes cutting-edge research of the last decade of different hydrogels based on natural polysaccharides (chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pullulan, and dextran) concerning their dye adsorption efficiency. Beyond their natural abundance, attributes of polysaccharides such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost make them not only efficient, but also environmentally sustainable candidates for water purification. The synthesis and dye removal performance together with the effect of diverse factors on gels retaining ability, kinetic, and isotherm models encountered in adsorption studies, are introduced. Thermodynamic parameters, sorbent recycling capacity along with conclusions and future prospects are also presented.

Progress on green crosslinking of polysaccharide hydrogels for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications

Natural polysaccharides are being studied for their biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, and low cost in the fabrication of various hydrogel devices. However, due to their insufficient physicochemical and mechanical qualities, polysaccharide hydrogels alone are not acceptable for biological applications. Various synthetic crosslinkers have been tested to overcome the drawbacks of standalone polysaccharide hydrogels; however, the presence of toxic residual crosslinkers, the generation of toxic by-products following biodegradation, and the requirement of toxic organic solvents for processing pose challenges in achieving the desired non-toxic biomaterials. Natural crosslinkers such as citric acid, tannic acid, vanillin, gallic acid, ferulic acid, proanthocyanidins, phytic acid, squaric acid, and epigallocatechin have been used to generate polysaccharide-based hydrogels in recent years. Various polysaccharides, including cellulose, alginate, pectin, hyaluronic acid, and chitosan, have been hydrogelized and investigated for their potential in drug delivery and tissue engineering applications using natural crosslinkers. We attempted to provide an overview of the synthesis of polysaccharide-based hydrogel systems (films, complex nanoparticles, microspheres, and porous scaffolds) based on green crosslinkers, as well as a description of the mechanism of crosslinking and properties with a special emphasis on drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications.

Chitosan, chitosan derivatives, and chitosan-based nanocomposites: eco-friendly materials for advanced applications (a review)

For many years, chitosan has been widely regarded as a promising eco-friendly polymer thanks to its renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and ease of modification, giving it enormous potential for future development. As a cationic polysaccharide, chitosan exhibits specific physicochemical, biological, and mechanical properties that depend on factors such as its molecular weight and degree of deacetylation. Recently, there has been renewed interest surrounding chitosan derivatives and chitosan-based nanocomposites. This heightened attention is driven by the pursuit of enhancing efficiency and expanding the spectrum of chitosan applications. Chitosan's adaptability and unique properties make it a game-changer, promising significant contributions to industries ranging from healthcare to environmental remediation. This review presents an up-to-date overview of chitosan production sources and extraction methods, focusing on chitosan's physicochemical properties, including molecular weight, degree of deacetylation and solubility, as well as its antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. In addition, we highlight the advantages of chitosan derivatives and biopolymer modification methods, with recent advances in the preparation of chitosan-based nanocomposites. Finally, the versatile applications of chitosan, whether in its native state, derived or incorporated into nanocomposites in various fields, such as the food industry, agriculture, the cosmetics industry, the pharmaceutical industry, medicine, and wastewater treatment, were discussed.

Nitric Acid-Treated Blue Coke-Based Activated Carbon's Structural Characteristics and Its Application in Hexavalent Chromium-Containing Wastewater Treatment

This study primarily focused on the efficient transformation of low-priced blue coke powder into a high-capacity adsorbent and aimed to address the pollution issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI))-laden wastewater and to facilitate the effective utilization of blue coke powder. A two-step method was utilized to fabricate a blue coke-based nitric acid-modified material (LCN), and the impact of nitric acid modification on the material's structure and its efficacy in treating Cr (VI)-contaminated wastewater was evaluated. Our experimental results illustrated that, under identical conditions, LCN exhibited superior performance for Cr (VI) treatment compared to the method employing only potassium hydroxide (LCK). The specific surface area and pore volume of LCN were 1.39 and 1.36 times greater than those of LCK, respectively. Further chemical composition analysis revealed that the functional group structure on the LCN surface was more conducive to Cr (VI) adsorption. The highest amount of Cr (VI) that LCN could bind was measured at 181.962 mg/g at 318 K. This was mostly due to chemisorption, which is dominated by redox reactions. The Cr (VI) removal process by LCN was identified to be a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process. Several tests on recycling and reuse showed that LCN is a stable and effective chromium-containing wastewater adsorbent, showing that it could be used in many situations.

Alginate-Based Hydrogels Enriched with Lavender Essential Oil: Evaluation of Physicochemical Properties, Antimicrobial Activity, and In Vivo Biocompatibility

Owing to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, in the last few years, lavender essential oil (LVO) has been used in medical applications as a promising approach for treating infected wounds. However, the practical applicability of LVO is limited by its high volatility and storage stability. This study aimed to develop a novel hybrid hydrogel by combining phytic acid (PA)-crosslinked sodium alginate (SA) and poly(itaconic anhydride-co-3,9-divinyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5.5] undecane (PITAU) and evaluate its potential effectiveness as an antibacterial wound dressing after incorporating LVO. The influence of the mass ratio between SA and PITAU on the properties and stability of hydrogels was investigated. After LVO loading, the effect of oil addition to hydrogels on their functional properties and associated structural changes was studied. FTIR analysis revealed that hydrogen bonding is the primary interaction mechanism between components in the hybrid hydrogels. The morphology was analyzed using SEM, evidencing a porosity dependent on the ratio between SA and PITAU, while LVO droplets were well dispersed in the polymer blend. The release of LVO from the hydrogels was determined using UV-VIS spectroscopy, indicating a sustained release over time, independent of the LVO concentration. In addition, the hybrid hydrogels were tested for their antioxidant properties and antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Very good antimicrobial activity was obtained in the case of sample SA_PITAU3+LVO10% against S. aureus and C. albicans. Moreover, in vivo tests showed an increased antioxidant effect of the SA_PITAU3+LVO10% hydrogel compared to the oil-free scaffold that may aid in accelerating the healing process of wounds.

Construction of a multi-layer protection of CS polymer brush grafted DA@CNTs coating on PVDF membrane for effective removal of dye effluent

In the process of removing dye wastewater, the membrane surface is susceptible to contamination, resulting in reduced performance and limited dye separation efficiency. A single hydrophilic modification layer is not enough to achieve effective separation of different types of dyes. The present research designed a "double layer protection" method in order to overcome the above deficiencies. A solution of dopamine (DA) coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) was covered on the surface of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane by deposition, followed by grafting a layer of chitosan (CS) polymer brushes on its surface. The spatial double layer structure provides an excellent barrier effect and effectively reduces the contamination of dyes. When filtering different types of dyes, effective filtration of anionic and cationic dyes through the electrostatic effect of the first layer, the adsorption of CNTs in the second layer and the hydration layer of both layers. All membranes have excellent rejection properties. More importantly, the membranes also had good chemical and mechanical stability and their serviceability was not degraded. Therefore, the prepared PVDF-based multi-layer composite membranes behave a potential application prospect in the wastewater purification field.

An efficient chitosan-naphthalimide fluorescent probe for simultaneous detection and adsorption of Hg2+ and its application in seafood, water and soil environments

As a virulent heavy metal ion, Hg2+ will lead to a serious threat to ecosystem and human health. In this work, we reported a chitosan-naphthalimide fluorescent probe CS-NA-ITC for specific recognition and efficient adsorption of Hg2+. CS-NA-ITC showed no fluorescence in solution state, while the fluorescence intensity increased obviously at the presence of Hg2+, accompanied by the fluorescence color becomes from colorless to bright yellow. It displayed favorable properties like low detection limit (73 nM), extensive pH detection range (5-10) and excellent anti-interference ability. The binding pattern of CS-NA-ITC to Hg2+ was verified by Job's plot, XPS analysis and FT-IR test. In addition, CS-NA-ITC was utilized to recognition of Hg2+ in actual water and soil samples and seafood products. Furthermore, the CS-NA-ITC hydrogel could be employed as an efficient Hg2+ adsorbent with good reusability, which adsorption ability was enhanced compared to chitosan hydrogel.

Chitosan Hydrogels for Water Purification Applications

Chitosan-based hydrogels have gained significant attention for their potential applications in water treatment and purification due to their remarkable properties such as bioavailability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmental friendliness, high pollutants adsorption capacity, and water adsorption capacity. This article comprehensively reviews recent advances in chitosan-based hydrogel materials for water purification applications. The synthesis methods, structural properties, and water purification performance of chitosan-based hydrogels are critically analyzed. The incorporation of various nanomaterials into chitosan-based hydrogels, such as nanoparticles, graphene, and metal-organic frameworks, has been explored to enhance their performance. The mechanisms of water purification, including adsorption, filtration, and antimicrobial activity, are also discussed in detail. The potential of chitosan-based hydrogels for the removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, organic contaminants, and microorganisms, from water sources is highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and future perspectives of chitosan-based hydrogels in water treatment and water purification applications are also illustrated. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into the current state of the art regarding chitosan-based hydrogels for water purification applications and highlights their potential for addressing global water pollution challenges.

Adsorption of anionic dye from aqueous environment using surface-engineered Zn/Cu hydroxy double salt-based material: mechanistic, equilibrium and kinetic studies

Herein, ethylene glycol (EG)-modified Zn/Cu hydroxy double salts (HDS) were synthesized using a facile synthetic approach. The formation of layered structure and presence of EG in the interlayer region were confirmed using PXRD and FTIR techniques. Furthermore, XPS analysis was used to confirm presence of metal ions in synthesized HDS. The surface area and pore size diameter of the HDS was found to be 32.30 m2 g-1 and 2.22 nm, respectively, using BET. The role of HDS was evaluated for its potential application as a sorbent for Congo red (CR) dye uptake. Batch studies were conducted to examine the impact of key variables, i.e., pH, time, adsorbent dosage and dye concentration on adsorption efficiency of HDS. Linear-nonlinear isotherm and kinetic models were employed for detailed analysis of experimental data. Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models were subsequently utilized to fit equilibrium data, among which Langmuir demonstrated to be most accurate. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity estimated using Langmuir model was computed to be 181.81 mg g-1. The kinetic data follows pseudo-second-order model having good R2 value (0.999). Additionally, thermodynamic study suggested spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption process having reusability up to 5 cycles with removal efficiency more than 85%.

Preparation and characterization of PA/P(AA-co-AM) composite hydrogels via photopolymerization

The present study synthesized a deep eutectic solvent (DES) using acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), and choline chloride (ChCl), and added phytic acid (PA) as a filler. Subsequently, the PA/P(AA-co-AM) composite hydrogel was prepared under ultraviolet irradiation and used a photoinitiator. Characterization of the hydrogels was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study aimed to investigate the impact of PA on the mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, and electrical conductivity of the composite hydrogel. The findings demonstrated that as the mass fraction of PA increased, the compressive strength of the composite hydrogel gradually decreased, yet the fatigue resistance of the composite hydrogel increased. Specifically, after 10 cycles of compression, the resilience recovery rate of FP0 dropped from 86.9% to 70.4%, the maximum stress recovery rate of FP1 dropped from 97.9% to 89.4%, the maximum stress recovery rate of FP2 dropped from 94.4% to 86.6%, and the maximum stress recovery rate of FP3 dropped from 97.3% to 93%. Overall, this study offers a straightforward and efficient method for producing composite hydrogels with both fatigue resistance and electrical conductivity.

Research Progress of Polysaccharide-Based Natural Polymer Hydrogels in Water Purification

The pollution and scarcity of freshwater resources are global problems that have a significant influence on human life. It is very important to remove harmful substances in the water to realize the recycling of water resources. Hydrogels have recently attracted attention due to their special three-dimensional network structure, large surface area, and pores, which show great potential for the removal of pollutants in water. In their preparation, natural polymers are one of the preferred materials because of their wide availability, low cost, and easy thermal degradation. However, when it is directly used for adsorption, its performance is unsatisfactory, so it usually needs to be modified in the preparation process. This paper reviews the modification and adsorption properties of polysaccharide-based natural polymer hydrogels, such as cellulose, chitosan, starch, and sodium alginate, and discusses the effects of their types and structures on performance and recent technological advances.

One-Step Preparation of Carboxymethyl Cellulose—Phytic Acid Hydrogels with Potential for Biomedical Applications

Hydrogels based on natural, biodegradable materials have gained considerable interest in the medical field due to their improved drug delivery profiles and tissue-mimicking architecture. In this regard, this study was devoted to the preparation and characterization of new physically crosslinked hydrogels based on carboxymethyl cellulose and an unconventional crosslinking agent, phytic acid. Phytic acid, in addition to its antioxidant and antibacterial effects, can improve the biological properties and stability of gels, without adding toxicity. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, rheological studies and thermal analysis confirmed the hydrogel formation. The influence of the ratio between the cellulose derivative and the crosslinker upon the morphological structure and water uptake was evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and swelling measurements in simulated body fluids. Furthermore, procaine was entrapped within the hydrogels and used as a model drug for in vitro studies, which highlighted the dependence of the drug release on the phytic acid content of the matrix. The materials demonstrated antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The biocompatibility was assessed on fibroblast cells, and according to our results, hydrogels can improve cell viability highlighting the potential of these systems as therapeutic scaffolds for skin tissue engineering.

Preparation of a Heterogeneous Catalyst CuO-Fe2O3/CTS-ATP and Degradation of Methylene Blue and Ciprofloxacin

A heterogeneous particle catalyst (CuO-Fe2O3/CTS-ATP) was synthesized via injection molding and ultrasonic immersion method, which is fast and effective. The particle catalyst applied attapulgite (ATP) wrapped by chitosan (CTS) as support, which was loaded dual metal oxides CuO and Fe2O3 as active components. After a series of characterizations of catalysts, it was found that CuO and Fe2O3 were successfully and evenly loaded on the surface of the CTS-ATP support. The catalyst was used to degrade methylene blue (MB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), and the experimental results showed that the degradation ratios of MB and CIP can reach 99.29% and 86.2%, respectively, in the optimal conditions. The degradation mechanism of as-prepared catalyst was analyzed according to its synthesis process and ∙OH production, and the double-cycle catalytic mechanism was proposed. The intermediate products of MB and CIP degradation were also identified by HPLC-MS, and the possible degradation pathways were put forward.

Efficient Visible-Light-Responsive Ag3PO4/g-C3N4/Hydroxyapatite Photocatalyst (from Oyster Shells) for the Degradation of Methylene Blue: Preparation, Properties and Mechanism

A novel ternary Ag3PO4/g-C3N4/hydroxyapatite photocatalyst was prepared, and its morphology, composition and structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and electron spin resonance, etc. The results show that g-C3N4 is evenly dispersed in the interior of hydroxyapatite, forming a homogeneous composite, and significantly improves the band gap structure of the material as a whole. Ag3PO4/g-C3N4/hydroxyapatite has good electron transfer ability and an appropriate energy band structure, which shows that the material has a good degradation effect and stability. Finally, based on the characterization and experimental results, a possible Z-scheme mechanism was proposed, and the active species involved in the reaction are mainly O2− and h+.
