Bimetallic PdAg nanoparticles for enhanced electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reaction

Chiral Effect on the Electrochemistry of Magnetic Ferrite Colloidal Nanocrystal Assembly Modified by Amino Acids

Chirality on the molecular or nanometer scale is particularly significant in chemistry, materials science, and biomedicine. Chiral electrochemical reactions on solid surfaces are currently a hot research topic. Herein, a chiral solid surface is constructed in aqueous solutions by mixing chiral molecules, d- and l-glutamic, with γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and MnFe2O4 colloidal nanocrystal assembly (CNA). Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry measurements are conducted in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing ascorbic acid (AA) or isoascorbic acid (IAA), and a chiral effect appears on the electroreduction of ferric ions of amino acid-modified magnetic samples. A negative or positive potential shift is observed, respectively, for magnetic structures modified by l- and d-glutamic acid in aqueous AA electrolyte, while the opposite is observed for these samples in IAA electrolyte. The reduction peak current increases by 0.8-1.2 times for the electrodes modified with l- and d-glutamate molecules, improving the electron transport efficiency. The chiral effect is absent when the electrolytes contain achiral uric acid or dopamine, or even chiral l-/d-/ld-tartaric acid. The chiral recognition between d-/l-glutamic acid and AA/IAA at the electrochemical interface is suggested to be related to their spinal configurations. These observations will be helpful for the rational design of inorganic functional chiral micro/nanostructures.

In-situ synthesis of carbon-supported ultrafine trimetallic PdSnAg nanoparticles for highly efficient alcohols electrocatalysis

Designing functional and durable electrocatalysts for the oxidation of alcohols plays a significant role for the development of direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). Herein, carbon-supported ultrafine PdSnAg nanoparticles with an average size of 3.27 nm (denoted as PdSnAg/C NPs) have been synthesized for alcohols electrocatalysis. The smaller particle size means a higher proportion of surface exposed atoms for catalyzing the reaction followed by high catalytic performance. The multimetallic nanoalloys have potential electronic structure adjustment and synergistic effect between different components. The incorporation of oxophilic metals Sn and Ag facilitates the removal of intermediates produced during the oxidation of alcohols. The PdSnAg/C NPs exhibit a remarkable electrocatalytic performance for ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) with the mass activity of 12.3 A mgPd-1, which is 15.6, 2.50 and 2.60 times higher than those of commercial Pd/C (0.790 A mgPd-1), PdSn/C NPs (4.85 A mgPd-1) and PdAg/C NPs (4.69 A mgPd-1), respectively. Meanwhile, PdSnAg/C NPs show superior mass activities of 10.6 A mgPd-1 and 6.65 A mgPd-1 for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), which are 14.3 and 8.30 times superior than the commercial Pd/C, respectively. The exceptional mass activity promises the PdSnAg/C NPs to be the potential Pd-based catalysts for alcohols electrocatalysis.

CoFe-Layered Double Hydroxide Coupled with Pd Particles for Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Electrocatalytic efficiency and stability have emerged as critical issues in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) of direct ethanol fuel cells. In this paper, Pd/Co₁Fe₃-LDH/NF as an electrocatalyst for EOR was prepared by a two-step synthetic strategy. Metal-oxygen bonds formed between Pd nanoparticles and Co₁Fe₃-LDH/NF guaranteed structural stability and adequate surface-active site exposure. More importantly, the charge transfer of the formed Pd-O-Co(Fe) bridge could effectively modulate the electrical structure of hybrids, improving the facilitated absorption of OH^- radicals and oxidation of CO_ads. Benefiting from the interfacial interaction, exposed active sites, and structural stability, the observed specific activity for Pd/Co₁Fe₃-LDH/NF (17.46 mA cm^-2) was 97 and 73 times higher than those of commercial Pd/C (20%) (0.18 mA cm^-2) and Pt/C (20%) (0.24 mA cm^-2), respectively. Besides, the j_f/j_r ratio representing the resistance to catalyst poisoning was 1.92 in the Pd/Co₁Fe₃-LDH/NF catalytic system. These results provide insights into optimizing the electronic interaction between metals and the support of electrocatalysts for EOR.

Simple Synthesis of PdAg Porous Nanowires as Effective Catalysts for Polyol Oxidation Reaction

The development of efficient and stable Pd-based electrocatalysts is extremely important to facilitate the development of catalysts for polyol oxidation reactions. To synthesize Pd-based catalysts with excellent catalytic performance, a series of PdAg porous nanowires (PdAg PNWs) with different elemental ratios was constructed by facile synthesis using a seed-mediated method. The synthesized PdAg PNWs have a rough surface and a porous one-dimensional structure, which optimize the specific surface area and surface area of catalysts, thereby providing more active sites for catalysts. PdAg PNWs benefited from the geometric effect of porous nanowires and the synergy between Pd and Ag, showing excellent catalysis (8243.0 and 4137.0 mA mg_Pd^-1) for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). Among them, the optimal Pd₆₂Ag₃₈ PNWs show the highest catalytic activity (6.0 times and 3.9 times higher than Pd/C) and stability compared with Pd₅₇Ag₄₃ PNWs, Pd₅₁Ag₄₉ PNWs, and Pd/C for EGOR and GOR. At the same time, this porous one-dimensional structure also endows PdAg PNWs with faster electron transfer capabilities than Pd/C. This work will likely provide an effective strategy for constructing cost-effective catalysts.
