Efficient removal of cationic and anionic dyes by surfactant modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles

Preparation of amino functionalized magnetic oyster shell powder adsorbent for selective removal of anionic dyes and Pb (II) from wastewater

A kind of new magnetic oyster shell (OS) composite (OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI) was synthesized and used as an adsorbent to remove carmine (CM), sunset yellow (SY) and Pb (II) from water. Firstly, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were introduced on the surface of waste oyster shell powder, then amino silanization was used to improve the stability of the material, and finally polyethylenimide (PEI) was grafted by Schiff base reaction. The composite was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, EDS, XPS, VSM, BET, TEM and zeta potential. The effects of adsorbent dosage and initial solution pH on the three samples were investigated by adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated in depth under the best experimental conditions. The composite adsorbent not only selectively removed anionic azo dyes, but also had good recycling. In addition, OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI still had good performance in mixed samples. These results indicated that OS-Fe3O4@SiO2@NH2@PEI was successfully used for the removal of a wide range of anionic dyes and heavy metal ions from the environment, and provided a new strategy for recycling waste.

Magnetic chitosan/calcium alginate double-network hydrogel beads: Preparation, adsorption of anionic and cationic surfactants, and reuse in the removal of methylene blue

Robust and reusable magnetic chitosan/calcium alginate double-network hydrogel beads (CSMAB) with an environmentally benign biocomposite material synthesis approach were used adsorption of surfactant and removal of methylene blue dye sequentially for the first time. Double network hydrogel structure with sodium alginate and chitosan and acidification of the surface with HCl provided the reusability of the beads at the pollutant removal in water. The CSMAB beads were characterized for structural analysis by FESEM, EDX, BET, VSM, and FTIR techniques. They were used for the adsorption of cationic hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDPCl) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants and reused in the removal of cationic methylene blue dye without any pretreatment. The effect of pH, adsorbent dose, and temperature on surfactant removal efficiency was analyzed and pH was found the statistical significance. The adsorption capacity of CSMAB beads with a surface area of 0.65 m² g^-1 was calculated as 1.9 mg g^-1 for HDPCl, and 1.2 mg g^-1 for SDS, respectively. The SDS and HDPCl adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamic results showed that the surfactant adsorption process is an exothermic and spontaneous process. SDS-reacted CSMAB beads showed higher efficiency with 61 % in the removal of methylene blue dye.

Efficient adsorption of Congo red by micro/nano MIL-88A (Fe, Al, Fe-Al)/chitosan composite sponge: Preparation, characterization, and adsorption mechanism

MIL-88A crystals with three different metal ligands (Fe, Al, FeAl) were prepared by hydrothermal method for the first time. The three materials' crystal structure and surface morphology are different, leading to different adsorption properties of Congo red (CR). The maximum adsorption capacities of MIL-88A (Fe), MIL-88A (FeAl), and MIL-88A (Al) are 607.7 mg · g^-1, 536.4 mg · g^-1, and 512.1 mg · g^-1 respectively. In addition, MIL-88A was combined with chitosan (CS) respectively, and MIL-88A/CS composite sponge was prepared by the freeze-drying method, which not only solved the defect that MIL-88A powder was difficult to recover but also further improved the removal ability of CR by the adsorbent. The maximum adsorption capacities of MIL-88A (FeAl)/CS, MIL-88A (Fe)/CS, MIL-88A (Al)/CS, and CS are 1312 mg · g^-1, 1056 mg · g^-1, 996.7 mg · g^-1, and 769.6 mg · g^-1, respectively. The structure and physicochemical properties of the materials were analyzed by SEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, and Zeta. The adsorption process of CR follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir, Sips isotherm model. Combined with thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption behavior was described as endothermic monomolecular chemical adsorption. The removal of CR is attributed to electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, metal coordination effects, and size-matching effects.

A high-performance fluorescent hybrid material for fluorometric detection and removal of toxic Pb(ii) ions from aqueous media: performance and challenges

Lead(ii) is an extremely toxic heavy metal ion that causes various health problems that are difficult to recover from in many developing countries of the world. Fluorescence-based nanosensors have amazing characteristics such as high sensitivity/selectivity, portability, low detection limit, rapid on-site usability, low cost and capability for removal of heavy metal ions. In this paper, a new fluorescent hybrid material based on silica gel (Bodipy-Si) was developed via a click reaction between alkyne-terminal silica gel and azido-terminal Bodipy. The solid support surface was characterized by various techniques such as SEM, FT-IR, etc. The adsorption and fluorometric properties of the fluorescent nanoparticles were also examined using atomic absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, and in the presence of metal ions, respectively. The results indicated that the prepared hybrid-fluorescent nanoparticles can be used in the removal and detection of toxic Pb(ii) ions. The limit of detection (LOD) was determined from the fluorescence data as 1.55 × 10-7 M and the maximum adsorption capacity was examined by AAS. The complexometric interactions between Pb(ii) and Bodipy-Si affect the adsorptions of the Pb(ii) metal ion at various concentrations.
