Enhancing photodegradation of thiamethoxam insecticide using SnS2/NCL as a photocatalyst: Mechanistic insights and environmental implications

The current research highlights the fabrication of a novel SnS2/CO32-@Ni-Co LDH (SnS2/NCL) by precipitating Ni-Co LDH over hydrothermally synthesized SnS2 nanoparticles for the enhanced degradation of thiamethoxam (THM) insecticide through the advanced oxidation process. The effect of several reaction parameters was optimized, and a maximum degradation of 98.1 ± 1.2 % with a rate constant of 0.0541 min-1 of 10 ppm THM was reached at a catalyst loading of 0.16 gL-1 using 0.3 mM of H2O2 within 70 min of visible light irradiation. The effect of metal cations, inorganic anions, dissolved organic matter, organic compounds and water samples on the photodegradation performance of SnS2/NCL nanocomposite was also examined to evaluate the prepared photocatalyst's suitability for use in actual wastewater conditions. The metal cations blocked the active sites of the photocatalyst and reduced the degradation efficiency except for Fe2+ ions, since it is a Fenton reagent and increased the production of hydroxyl radicals. Inorganic anions are the scavengers of hydroxyl radicals and hinder photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, lake water containing varying degrees of co-existing ions shows the lowest degradation efficiency among other water samples. The SnS2/NCL nanocomposite could be reused for five cycles while maintaining a photocatalytic efficiency of 83.6 ± 0.3 % in the fifth run. The prepared SnS2/NCL nanocomposite also showed excellent photodegradation of several other emerging organic pollutants with an efficiency of over 80 % under optimum conditions. Incorporating Ni-Co LDH with SnS2 helped to delocalize photoinduced charges, leading to increased photocatalytic activity and a slower electron-hole recombination rate. The present research highlights the photocatalytic activity of SnS2/NCL photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of emerging contaminants from wastewater.

Rational synthesis of 3D coral-like ZnCo2O4 nanoclusters with abundant oxygen vacancies for high-performance supercapacitors

Transition metal oxides with high theoretical capacitance are regarded as desired electrode materials for supercapacitors, however, the poor conductivity and sluggish charge transfer kinetics constrain their electrochemical performance. The three-dimensional (3D) coral-like ZnCo2O4 nanomaterials with abundant oxygen vacancies were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method and chemical reduction approach. The introduced oxygen vacancies can provide more active sites and lower the energy barrier, thereby facilitating the kinetics of surface reactions. Furthermore, the abundant oxygen vacancies in metal oxides can function as shallow donors to facilitate charge carrier diffusion, resulting in a faster ion diffusion rate and superior electrochemical conductivity. The electrochemical performance of ZnCo2O4 was optimized by the introduction of oxygen vacancies. The ZnCo2O4 nanoclusters, reduced by 0.5 M NaBH4 (ZnCo2O4-0.5), exhibit a specific capacitance of 2685.7 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, which is nearly twice that of the pristine ZnCo2O4 (1525.7 F g-1 at 1 A g-1). The ZnCo2O4-0.5 exhibits an excellent rate capacity (81.9% capacitance retention at 10 A g-1) and a long cycling stability (72.6% specific capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 3 A g-1). Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC, ZnCo2O4-0.5 nanoclusters//active carbon) delivers a maximum energy density of 50.2 W h kg-1 at the power density of 493.7 W kg-1 and an excellent cycling stability (75.3% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1), surpassing the majority of previously reported ZnCo2O4-based supercapacitors. This work is important for revealing the pivotal role of implementing the defect engineering regulation strategy in achieving optimization of both electrochemical activity and conductivity.

Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots embedding CuCo-LDH hierarchical hollow structure for boosted charge storage capability in supercapacitor

The nanostructure optimization of layered double hydroxide (LDH) can effectively alleviate fragile agglomerated problems. Herein, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) embedded in CuCo-LDH hierarchical hollow structure is synthesized by hydrothermal and impregnation methods. The electrochemical results show that the ordered multi-component structure could effectively inhibit the aggregation and layer stacking. At the same time, the hierarchical structure establishes new electron and ion transfer channels, greatly reducing the resistance of interlayer transport and accelerating the diffusion rate of electrolyte ions. Besides, NGQDs have both good electrical conductivity and abundant active sites, which can further improve the electron transmission rate and effectively strengthen the energy storage capacity of the material. Therefore, the large specific capacity of 1009 F g-1 can be displayed at 1 A g-1. The energy density of the assembled carbon cloth (CC)@CuCo-LDH/NGQDs//activated carbon (AC) device can reach 58.6 Wh kg-1 at 850 W kg-1. Above test results indicate that CC@CuCo-LDH/NGQDs//AC devices exhibit stable multi-component hierarchical structure and excellent electrical conductivity, which provides an effective strategy for enhancing the electrochemical characteristics of asymmetric supercapacitors.
