Evaporation of Saline Droplets on a Superhydrophobic Substrate: Formation of Crystal Shell and "Legs"

We studied the evaporation-driven crystallization in the droplets of sodium acetate anhydrous (CH₃COONa) aqueous solution, which were deposited on superhydrophobic substrates. The results reveal distinct crystallization behaviors between saturated and unsaturated droplets under identical experimental conditions. Specifically, unsaturated droplets could form a quasi-spherical crystal shell on the superhydrophobic substrate, while saturated droplets could develop crystal legs between the droplet and substrate when the crystal shell formed. Subsequently, the saturated droplet was lifted off the substrate by the growing crystal legs. The formation of crystal shell was closely associated with the evaporation from the droplet surface and the internal convection inside the droplet. The formation of crystal legs was induced by the heterogeneous nucleation effect caused by the substrate of SiO₂ nanoparticles. These findings provide valuable insights into regulating the morphology of salt crystallization through adjustments in salt solution concentration and substrate surface structure.

Generality of Evaporative Crystal Liftoff on Heated Hydrophobic Substrates

Scaling or mineral fouling occurs due to the presence of dissolved minerals in water. Scaling is problematic in numerous industrial and household plumbing applications where water is used. The current methods of scale removal often utilize harsh chemicals that are not environmentally friendly. The evaporation of a saline droplet provides a platform to study the role of the substrate in the dynamics of crystallization during scaling. In the present work, we show out-of-plane growth of crystal deposits during the evaporation of saline droplets of aqueous potassium chloride on a heated smooth and microtextured hydrophobic substrate. These out-of-plane deposits, termed as "crystal legs", are in minimal contact with the substrate and can be easily removed from the substrate. The out-of-plane evaporative crystallization of saline droplets of different initial volumes and concentrations is observed irrespective of the chemistry of the hydrophobic coating and the crystal habits investigated. We attribute this general behavior of crystal legs to the growth and stacking of smaller crystals (size ∼10 μm) between the primary crystals toward the end of evaporation. We show that the rate at which the crystal legs grow increases with an increase in the substrate temperature. A mass conservation model is applied to predict the leg growth rate, which agrees well with the experiments.

Evaporation-induced fractal patterns: A bridge between uniform pattern and coffee ring

HYPOTHESIS

The rich variety of patterns induced by evaporating drops containing particles has significant guidance for coating processes, inkjet printing, and nanosemiconductors. However, most existing works construct a uniform pattern by suppressing the coffee ring effect, and establishing the connection between them is still an academic challenge.

EXPERIMENTS

We report uniform, polygonal, and coffee ring patterns obtained by adjusting the solute concentration that sets in when an ethanol drop with dissolved ibuprofen is deposited on a silicon wafer.

FINDINGS

Pattern formation involves rich hydrodynamic events: spreading, evaporative instability, dewetting, film formation, and particle deposition. Based on the distinct multiscale properties, this series of patterns is directly connected from the perspective of fractal geometry, which allows us to name them "fractal deposition patterns". A theoretical model considering film stability is established to explain the mechanism behind pattern formation, which is well verified by experiments. This work has presented a unique strategy that can directly connect uniform, polygonal, and coffee ring patterns under the same physics, hoping to provide instructive guidance for practical applications.

Pinning and Depinning Dynamics of an Evaporating Sessile Droplet Containing Mono- and Bidispersed Colloidal Particles on a Nonheated/Heated Hydrophobic Substrate

The present study is primarily focused on the coupled effects of substrate heating, colloidal dispersion, and particle size variation on the contact line (CL) pinning-depinning dynamics of evaporating droplets containing mono- (3/4.5 μm) and bidispersed (3 and 4.5 μm) polystyrene colloidal particles on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates. Experimental techniques such as high-speed visualization, optical microscopy, infrared thermography, and scanning electron microscopy are implemented to discover the plausible causes dictating the underlying physics. In the case of the nonheated substrate, there exists a significant delay in the CL depinning for the evaporating droplets containing bidispersed particles, as opposed to the monodispersed cases. A first-order model is illustrated for the determination of the net horizontal force acting on the particles near the CL. Interestingly, the model's findings revealed that due to the difference of particle size in the case of the bidispersed suspension, the interparticle contact force gets modified, thus enhancing the CL pinning. For the heated substrate cases, droplets with monodispersed particles (3 μm) exhibit a substantial delay in the CL depinning, whereas a nearly complete pinning of the CL is witnessed for the case of bidispersed colloidal suspension droplets. It is mainly due to the augmentation of particle deposition near the CL because of the circulatory thermal Marangoni and outward capillary flows. Thus, the mobility of the CL is inhibited, which is further reinforced by the presence of different-sized particles. Eventually, a ring-like deposition is observed, as opposed to an inner deposit commonly observed from the evaporation of colloidal droplets on hydrophobic substrates.
