An antibacterial and antifouling amidoxime-functionalized graphene oxide aerogel for selective uranium adsorption in Salt Lake water

Amidoxime-grafted cotton fibers with anti-microbial sludge for efficient uranium recovery

Uranium as a nuclear fuel, its source and aftertreatment has been a hot topic of debate for developers. In this paper, amidoxime and guanidino-modified cotton fibers (DC-AO-PHMG) were synthesized by the two-step functionalization approach, which exhibited remarkable antimicrobial and high uranium recovery property. Adsorption tests revealed that DC-AO-PHMG had excellent selectivity and anti-interference properties, the maximum adsorption capacity of 609.75 mg/g. More than 85 % adsorption capacity could still be kept after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, and it conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model as a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer process. FT-IR, EDS and XPS analyses speculated that the amidoxime and amino synergistically increased the uranium uptake. The inhibitory activities of DC-AO-PHMG against three aquatic bacteria, BEY, BEL (from Yellow River water and lake bottom silt, respectively) and B. subtilis were significantly stronger, and the uranium adsorption was not impacted by the high bacteria content. Most importantly, DC-AO-PHMG removed up to 94 % of uranium in simulated seawater and extracted up to 4.65 mg/g of uranium from Salt Lake water, which demonstrated its great potential in the field of uranium resource recovery.

Adsorbents for the Uranium Capture from Seawater for a Clean Energy Source and Environmental Safety: A Review

On the global level, uranium is considered the main nuclear energy source, and its removal from terrestrial ores is enough to last until the end of the current century. Therefore, a major focus is attracted toward the capture of uranium from a sustainable source (seawater). Uranium recovery from seawater has been reported over the last few decades, and recently many efforts have been devoted to the preparation of such adsorbents with higher selectivity and adsorption capacity. The purpose of this review is to report the advancement in adsorbent preparation and modification of porous materials. It also discusses challenges such as adsorbent selectivity, low uranium concentration in seawater, contact time, biofouling, and the solution to the problems necessary to ensure a better adsorption performance of the adsorbent.

Diethylenetriamine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide having more amino groups for methylene blue removal

To obtain a high-performance amino-functionalized graphene, a new aminated graphene was prepared through a substitution reaction between chlorine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide and diethylenetriamine. The product exhibits high nitrogen content uniformly distributed in its sheets, with diethylenetriamine covalently attached to these sheets. The C-N bond in the product was certified by the Fourier transform infrared spectrum, which implies the successful attachment of diethylenetriamine to the graphene sheets. The average interlayer spacing is 0.42 nm. Diethylenetriamine features many more amino groups that act as ligands and spacers during adsorption and layer stacking processes. Compared with the adsorption capacities of reduced graphene oxide (77.1 mg g-1) and activated carbon (46.7 mg g-1), the product exhibits higher adsorption capacity (291.4 mg g-1). The adsorption process fits the quasi-first-order model and Langmuir model. Physical adsorption plays a primary role in the adsorption process. The amino group of the product easily reacts with other chemicals, making it a useful intermediate for other graphene materials.

Graphene-Based Engineered Living Materials

With the rise of engineered living materials (ELMs) as innovative, sustainable and smart systems for diverse engineering and biological applications, global interest in advancing ELMs is on the rise. Graphene-based nanostructures can serve as effective tools to fabricate ELMs. By using graphene-based materials as building units and microorganisms as the designers of the end materials, next-generation ELMs can be engineered with the structural properties of graphene-based materials and the inherent properties of the microorganisms. However, some challenges need to be addressed to fully take advantage of graphene-based nanostructures for the design of next-generation ELMs. This work covers the latest advances in the fabrication and application of graphene-based ELMs. Fabrication strategies of graphene-based ELMs are first categorized, followed by a systematic investigation of the advantages and disadvantages within each category. Next, the potential applications of graphene-based ELMs are covered. Moreover, the challenges associated with fabrication of next-generation graphene-based ELMs are identified and discussed. Based on a comprehensive overview of the literature, the primary challenge limiting the integration of graphene-based nanostructures in ELMs is nanotoxicity arising from synthetic and structural parameters. Finally, we present possible design principles to potentially address these challenges.

On the Analysis of Cryogels and Xerogels Using Cellulose Nanofibers and Graphene Oxide

Aerogels are highly porous and ultralight three-dimensional materials with great potential for various applications. To obtain highly porous and structurally stable aerogels, a carefully designed synthesis process is required. These materials offer flexibility in manipulating their properties, allowing the incorporation of modifying agents according to specific needs. In this study, compounds were synthesized using graphene oxide (GO) and nanocellulose fibers (NFC) through the hydrothermal reduction methodology. Two drying techniques were employed: lyophilization and oven evaporation, resulting in materials called cryogel and xerogel, respectively. Various parameters that can interfere with the properties of these nanomaterials were evaluated. The results indicated that the cryogel dried by lyophilization provided the best applicability due to its structural flexibility after compressions, whereas the xerogel obtained through the oven evaporation process resulted in a compound with high rigidity and disintegration. Structural characterizations demonstrated the successful development of the precursors and promising characteristics in the synthesized nanomaterials. With its flexibility, approximately 98% porosity, low shrinkage rate, light weight, and electrical conductivity, the developed cryogel showed high potential in various applications, such as pressure sensors, electromagnetic shielding, and other research and development fields.

Preparation of biochar@chitosan-polyethyleneimine for the efficient removal of uranium from water environment

A novel chitosan-based composite with rich active sites was synthesized by uniformly dispersing biochar into the cross-linked network structure formed by chitosan and polyethyleneimine. Due to the synergistic effect of biochar (minerals) and chitosan-polyethyleneimine interpenetrating network (amino and hydroxyl), the chitosan-based composite possessed an excellent adsorption performance for uranium(VI). It could rapidly (<60 min) achieve a high adsorption efficiency (96.7 %) for uranium(VI) from water and a high static saturated adsorption capacity (633.4 mg/g), which was far superior to other chitosan-based adsorbents. Moreover, the separation for uranium(VI) on the chitosan-based composite was suitable for a variety of actual water environments and the adsorption efficiencies all exceeded 70 % in different water bodies. The soluble uranium(VI) could be completely removed by the chitosan-based composite in the continuous adsorption process, which could meet the permissible limits of the World Health Organization. In sum, the novel chitosan-based composite could overcome the bottleneck of current chitosan-based adsorption materials and become a potential adsorbent for the remediation of actual uranium(VI) contaminated wastewater.

N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) malonamide based amidoxime functionalized polymer immobilized in biomembranes for highly selective adsorption of uranium(VI)

Amidoxime compounds have been widely used in metal separation and recovery because of their excellent chelating properties to metal ions, especially to uranium (VI). In this study, N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) malonamide was obtained from ethanolamine and dimethyl malonate, and used to prepare a two-dimensional network polymer, then the obtained polymer was immobilized in an environmentally friendly chitosan biomembrane, which enhanced its stability and hydrophobicity, meanwhile the amidoxime functionalization was achieved by oximation reaction of bromoacetonitrile, the application of the material further extends to uranium (VI) separation in solutions. Due to the synergistic action of amide group and amidoxime group, poly (ethanolamine-malonamide) based amidoxime biomembranes (PEA-AOM) showed extraordinary adsorption effect on uranium (VI), among which the saturation adsorption capacity of PEA-AOM-2 was 748.64 mg/g. PEA-AOM-2 also had good reusability (following five cycles of adsorption-desorption, the recovery rate maintained at 88%) and selectivity for uranium (VI), showing satisfactory results in competitive ion coexistence system and simulated seawater experiments. This study demonstrated that PEA-AOM-2 provided a new option for uranium (VI) separation in complex environment and low-concentration uranium background.

Stepwise rapid electrolytic synthesis of graphene oxide for efficient adsorption of organic pollutants

Graphene oxide (GO) has been widely used in energy devices, biomedicine, environmental protection, composite materials and other fields. Hummers' method is currently one of the most powerful strategies for the preparation of GO. However, many deficiencies, including severe environmental pollution, operation safety issues and low oxidation efficiency are major obstacles for the large-scale green synthesis of GO. Here, we report a stepwise electrochemical method for the fast preparation of GO using spontaneous persulfate intercalation followed by anodic electrolytic oxidation. Such a step-by-step process not only avoids uneven intercalation and insufficient oxidation in traditional one-pot methods, but also largely shortens the overall duration by two orders of magnitude. In particular, the oxygen content of the obtained GO is as high as 33.7 at%, almost double that from Hummers' method (17.4 at%). The abundant surface functional groups render this GO an excellent adsorption platform for methylene blue with an adsorption capacity of 358 mg g^-1, 1.8-fold higher than conventional GO.

Highly effective sustainable membrane based cyanobacteria for uranium uptake from aqueous environment

Wastewater from industrial process of uranium ore mining contains a large amount of this radioactive pollutant. Regarding the advantages of biosorption, it was found that varieties of biomasses such as agricultural waste, algae and fungi are effective for uranium removal. However, there is limited research on cyanobacteria, therefore, cyanobacteria, Anagnostidinema amphibium (CAA) was investigated by batch method for the first time for biosorption of uranium (VI). Optimization of biosorption parameters showed that maximum removal efficiency of 92.91% was reached at pH range of 9-11 with 50 mg of cyanobacteria to 100 mg/L U(VI) initial concentration, at 25 °C within 40 min. Used biosorbent exhibited very good selectivity for U(VI) ions and reusability in IV sorption/desorption cycles. Characterization of CAA surface was performed by FTIR, EDS, EDXRF and SEM analysis and it has shown various functional groups (CONH, COOH, OH, PO alkyl group) and that it is very rich in elements such as iron, potassium and calcium. In binary systems, contained of U(VI) and selected ions, CAA exhibits very good selectivity towards U(VI) ions. Kinetic data revealed the best accordance of experimental data with the pseudo-second-order model and isotherms data agreed with Freundlich model. Thermodynamic data implied that U(VI) biosorption process by A. amphibium exhibited spontaneity and modelling of the investigated process showed that the adsorption of uranium ions occurs mainly via peptidoglycan carboxyl groups. Overall results show that these cyanobacteria with a maximum sorption capacity of 324.94 mg/g have great potential for the processing of wastewater polluted with uranium (VI).
