Removal of organic contaminants by starch-derived porous carbon via peroxymonosulfate activation: The role of N doping and Fe/Mn loading

Activated persulfate for efficient bisphenol A degradation via nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn bimetallic biochar

To achieve the purpose of treating waste by waste, in this study, a nitrogen-doped Fe/Mn bimetallic biochar material (FeMn@N-BC) was prepared from chicken manure for persulfate activation to degrade Bisphenol A (BPA). The FeMn@N-BC was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffract meter (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and found that N doping can form larger specific surface area. Catalytic degradation experiments showed that Fe/Mn bimetal doping not only accelerated the electron cycling rate on the catalyst surface, but also makes the biochar magnetic and easy to separate, thus reducing environmental pollution. Comparative experiments was concluded that the highest degradation efficiency of BPA was achieved when the mass ratios of urea and chicken manure, Fe/Mn were 3:1 and 2:1, respectively, and the pyrolysis temperature was 800 °C, which can almost degrade all the BPA in 60 min. FeMn@N-BC/PS system with high catalytic efficiency and low consumables is promising for reuse of waste resources and the remediation of wastewater.

Fe loading 3D micro-meso-porous carbon sphere derived from natural cellulose of sawdust activating peroxymonosulfate for degradation of enrofloxacin

Fe loading 3D micro-meso-porous carbon sphere (Fe@3C-2N) was derived from natural cellulose of sawdust and melamine through sodium alginate and ferric chloride cross-linking followed by carbonization processes, which served as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators for enrofloxacin (ENR) degradation. The cellulose was produced by the delignification of sawdust with sodium chlorite. The delignification of sawdust and the addition of melamine increased the porosity and electron transport capacity of Fe@3C-2N. When the dosages of Fe@3C-2N and PMS were 0.60 g L-1 and 0.20 g L-1 respectively, the degradation rate of ENR (20 mg L-1) reached 92.17 % within 80 min, suggesting the satisfactory activation performance of PMS. The good structural stability of Fe@3C-2N makes it suitable for use as packing in continuous flow reactors for wastewater treatment. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggested that SO4•- and 1O2 were the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROSs) in Fe@3C-2N/PMS system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that Fe3C, pyrrolic N and graphitic N were the potential active sites.

Starch of oat derived nanostructured Fe/Mn bimetallic carbon materials for sulfamethoxazole degradation via peroxymonosulfate activation

Fe/Mn bimetallic carbon materials were synthesized by combining oat and urea, followed by and carbonization processes, the activity and mechanism of the obtained materials in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation were determined. Data suggested that the obtained material (CN@FeMn-10-800) showed the optimal performance for SMX degradation under the1:8:0.05:0.05 mass ratios of oat/urea/Fe/Mn. Around 91.2 % SMX (10 mg L-1) was removed under the conditions of 0.15 g L-1 CN@FeMn-10-800 and 0.20 g L-1 PMS. The CN@FeMn-10-800 showed great adaptability under different conditions, satisfactory activation repeatability and versatility. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrated that core-shell structure with rich porous of CN@FeMn-10-800 was achieved. Quenching test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) indicated that surface bound oxygen and singlet oxygen (1O2) were the dominate reactive groups in this system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that graphite N, Fe0, Fe3C and Mn(II) were the dominant active sites. Through the work, a simple strategy could be found to make high-value use of biomass and use it to effectively purified wastewater.

Nitrogen doped magnetic porous carbon derived from starch of oatmeal for efficient activation peroxymonosulfate to degradation sulfadiazine

Nitrogen doped magnetic porous carbon catalyst based on starch of oatmeal was obtained by mixing and pyrolysis process, and its catalytic activity of peroxymonosulfate activation for sulfadiazine degradation was evaluated. When ratio of oatmeal/urea/iron was 1: 2: 0.1, CN@Fe-10 had the best catalytic activity to degrade sulfadiazine. Around 97.8 % removal of 20 mg L^-1 sulfadiazine was achieved under incorporating of 0.05 g L^-1 catalyst and 0.20 g L^-1 peroxymonosulfate. Good adaptability, stability and universality of CN@Fe-10 were verified under different conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching test suggested that surface-bound reactive oxides species and singlet oxygen were the main reactive oxides species in this reaction. Electrochemical analysis indicated that CN@Fe-10 had a good electrical conductivity and electron transferred did occur among CN@Fe-10 surface, peroxymonosulfate and sulfadiazine. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that Fe⁰, Fe₃C, pyridine nitrogen and graphite nitrogen were the potential active sites for peroxymonosulfate activation. Therefore, the work provided a practical approach for recycling biomass.

Nitrogen doped bimetallic sludge biochar composite for synergistic persulfate activation: Reactivity, stability and mechanisms

As a recycling use of waste activated sludge (WAS), we used high-temperature pyrolysis of WAS to support bimetallic Fe-Mn with nitrogen (N) co-doping (FeMn@N-S), a customized composite catalyst that activates peroxysulphate (PS) for the breakdown of tetracycline (TC). First, the performance of TC degradation was evaluated and optimized under different N doping, pH, catalyst dosages, PS dosages, and contaminant concentrations. Activating PS with FeMn@N-S caused the degradation of 91% of the TC in 120 min. Next, characterization of FeMn@N-S by XRD, XPS and FT-IR analysis highlights N doping is beneficial to take shape more active sites and reduces the loss of Fe and Mn during the degradation reaction. As expected, the presence of Fe-Mn bimetallic on the catalyst surface increases the rate of electron transfer, promoting the redox cycle of the catalyst. Other functional groups on the catalyst surface, such as oxygen-containing groups, accelerated the electron transfer during PS activation. Free radical quenching and ESR analysis suggest that the main contributor to TC degradation is surface-bound SO₄^•-, along with the presence of single linear oxygen (¹O₂) oxidation pathway. Finally, the FeMn@N-S composite catalyst exhibits excellent pH suitability and reusability, indicating a solid practicality of this catalyst in PS-based removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by CuFe-prussian blue analogues for the degradation of bisphenol S: Effect, mechanism, and pathway

The fenton-like process based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is considered as a promising strategy for the removal of organic pollutants. However, the development of efficient photocatalysts for PMS activation remains challenging. Herein, copper-iron prussian blue analogue (Cu_nFe₁-PBA, n = 1, 2, 3, 4) nanomaterials were first fabricated through a simple combination of co-precipitation and calcination processes. The as-synthesized Cu_nFe₁-PBA composite catalyst was used to activate PMS for the degradation of endocrine disruptor bisphenol S (BPS). As the result, Cu₃Fe₁-PBA calcined at 300 °C (Cu₃Fe₁-PBA*300 °C) mainly composed of CuFe₂O₄ and CuO showed a higher catalytic activity for activating PMS for BPS degradation than those of Cu_nFe₁-PBA composite. Additionally, Cu₃Fe₁-PBA*300 °C/PMS system was suitable for degradation of BPS at 400 mg/L catalyst or PMS and wide pH ranges from 3 to 11 while coexisting inorganic anions (SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, and HCO₃^-) and humic acid all inhibited the reaction. Radical trapping experiment, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that Cu and Fe could regulate the charge balance through changes of valence state, and active PMS to produce free radicals effectively, especially the production of ¹O₂. Furthermore, the analysis of the BPS intermediates of degradation was carried out by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and two degradation pathways of BPS were proposed. In summary, this work provides a facile avenue to design efficient catalysts to activate PMS for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants in water remediation.
