Abstract
Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is widely used in tissue engineering and pharmaceutical research. It is readily available as a byproduct of the cattle industry, collected from blood. In this study, we conducted a physicochemical investigation of the phase separation in a mixture of Triton X-100 (TX-100) and BSA, influenced by various polyols, using the well-established cloud point (CP) determination method. The addition of polyols resulted in a significant reduction in CP values for the TX-100 + BSA mixture. For the system under investigation with polyols, the CP values followed the order: [Formula: see text] Under identical conditions, the system exhibited maximum solubility in the xylose solution and minimum solubility in the maltose solution. At lower polyol content, negative values of standard enthalpy (∆Hc0) and standard entropy (∆Sc0) changes were observed, suggesting that electrostatic forces dominate as the driving force for clouding. At highest employed polyol concentration in some case, positive values for ∆Hc0 and ∆Sc0 were achieved, which indicated that hydrophobic interactions likely dominate the phase partitioning of the amphiphile and protein mixture. Additionally, entropy-enthalpy compensation parameters were calculated and analyzed with a rational approach. Molecular docking analysis further demonstrated the presence of hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions between TX-100 and BSA.

Abstract
High sulfur content polymeric materials, known for their intriguing properties such as high refractive indices and high electrochemical capacities, have garnered significant interest in recent years for their applications in optics, antifouling surfaces, triboelectrics, and electrochemistry. Despite the high interest, most high sulfur-content polymers reported to date are either bulk materials or thin films, and there is a general lack of research into sulfur-rich polymer colloids. Water-dispersed, sulfur-rich particles are anticipated to broaden the range of applications for sulfur-containing materials. In this study, the preparation and size control parameters are presented of an aqueous dispersion of sulfur-rich polymers with the sulfur content of dispersed particles exceeding 75 wt%. Employing polymeric stabilizers with varying hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), along with changing the rank of inorganic polysulfides, allow for the control of particle size in the range of 360 nm - 1.8 µm. The sulfur-rich colloid demonstrates antioxidant properties in water, demonstrating the potential for the use of sulfur-rich polymeric materials readily removable, heterogeneous radical scavengers.

Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as persistent environmental pollutants, often reside in nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs). Mycobacterium sp. WY10, boasting highly hydrophobic surfaces, can adsorb to the oil-water interface, stabilizing the Pickering emulsion and directly accessing PAHs for biodegradation. We investigated the impact of Triton X-100 (TX100) on this interfacial uptake of phenanthrene (PHE) by Mycobacteria, using n-tetradecane (TET) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as NAPLs. Interfacial tension, phase behavior, and emulsion stability studies, alongside confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscope observations, unveiled the intricate interplay. In surfactant-free systems, Mycobacteria formed stable W/O Pickering emulsions, directly degrading PHE within the NAPLs because of their intimate contact. Introducing low-dose TX100 disrupted this relationship. Preferentially binding to the cells, the surfactant drastically increased the cell hydrophobicity, triggering desorption from the interface and phase separation. Consequently, PAH degradation plummeted due to hindered NAPL access. Higher TX100 concentrations flipped the script, creating surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsions devoid of interfacial cells. Surprisingly, PAH degradation remained efficient. This paradox can be attributed to NAPL emulsification, driven by the surfactant, which enhanced mass transfer and brought the substrate closer to the cells, despite their absence at the interface. This study sheds light on the complex effect of surfactants on Mycobacteria and PAH uptake, revealing an antagonistic effect at low concentrations that ultimately leads to enhanced degradation through emulsification at higher doses. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing bioremediation strategies in PAH-contaminated environments.

Abstract
In the current study, the association and phase separation of cationic tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and nonionic Triton X-100 (TX-100) surfactants with promethazine hydrochloride (PMH) were investigated in aqueous ammonium-based solutions. The micellization nature of the TTAB and PMH drug mixture was examined by evaluating critical micelle concentration (CMC) and counterion binding extent (β) at different salt contents and temperatures (298.15-323.15 K). Micelle formation in the TTAB + PMH mixture was enhanced in the presence of ammonium salts, whereas the process was delayed with an increase in temperature in the respective salt solution. With an increase in salt content, the cloud point (CP) of the TX-100 + PMH mixture decreased, which revealed that the respective progression occurred through the salting out phenomenon. In micellization and clouding processes, the changes in free energies ΔG0m and ΔG0c were found to be negative and positive, respectively, demonstrating that the corresponding processes are spontaneous and non-spontaneous. Standard enthalpies (ΔH0m/ΔH0c) and standard entropies (ΔS0m/ΔS0c) for the association and clouding processes, respectively, were also calculated and discussed. The core forces amid TTAB/TX-100 and PMH in the manifestation of electrolytes are dipole-dipole and hydrophobic forces among the employed components according to the values for ΔH0m/ΔH0c and ΔS0m/ΔS0c, respectively.

Abstract
Cloud-point extraction (CPE) is a pre-treatment technique for the extraction and preconcentration of different chemical compounds, such as metal ions, pesticides, drugs, phenols, vitamins etc., from various samples. CPE is based on the phenomenon of two phases (micellar and aqueous) forming after the heating of an aqueous isotropic solution of a non-ionic or zwitterionic surfactant above the cloud-point temperature. If analytes are added to the surfactant solution under suitable conditions, they should be extracted into the micellar phase, also called the surfactant-rich phase. Recently, the traditional CPE procedure is being increasingly replaced by improved CPE procedures. In this study, recent advances in CPE over the last three years (2020 - 2022), including the application of various innovative approaches, are reviewed. In addition to the basic principle of CPE, alternative extraction media in CPE, CPE supported by various auxiliary energies, a different modified CPE procedure and the use nanomaterials and solid-phase extraction in combination with CPE are presented and discussed. Finally, some future trends for improved CPE are presented.

Abstract
The water-blocking effect is a serious problem when developing tight sandstone gas reservoirs, which can cause a sharp reduction in gas production. Wettability alteration of near-wellbore sand rock surface from superhydrophilicity to superhydrophobicity is an effective method to decrease capillary pressure. In this study, a superhydrophobic fluorinated nano-emulsion was synthesized via a soap-free emulsion polymerization process using methacryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, trifluoctyl methacrylate, and styrene as monomers. The effect of the fluorinated monomer concentration on wettability alteration was evaluated by measuring the contact angle of the formation water droplet on the modified glass slides using nano-emulsions with different fluorinated monomer concentrations. The results showed that the nano-emulsion had a good dispersibility and homogeneous particle size of around 90 nm, and with the increase in fluorinated monomer concentration, the contact angle increased. The contact angle was the largest when the fluorinated monomer mass rate concentration reached 50%. The adsorption of nanoparticles could alter the rock wettability from a super hydrophilic state (θ = 7°) to a superhydrophobic state (θ = 150°). The spontaneous imbibition experiments showed that the formation water adsorption quality of the core decreased by 49.7% after being modified by the nano-emulsion. The nano-emulsion showed a good superhydrophobicity and had the potential to be used to reduce the water-blocking damage in the tight gas reservoirs.

In the occurrence of PVA, the cloud point (CP) values of TX-100 initially enhance with enhancing the concentration of PVA and tend to decrease after a certain concentration. For different ratios of TX-100 and TW-80 mixture having the same concentration of both solutions, CP values increase through the decreasing ratios of TX-100 with/without PVA. In the presence of polymer, at higher ratios of TX-100 than TW-80, the CP values are higher in magnitudes in comparison to the aqueous medium but at lower ratios of TX-100, the value of CP are lower in magnitudes in comparison to the aqueous system. The CP values of the TX-100 + TW-80 mixture in the salt system are lower in magnitudes than the aqueous medium in both the absence/presence of PVA. Abstract
Abstract
Background
Because of increasing amounts of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in processed foods and the complexity of the matrix, monitoring of trace 5-HMF requires accurate and reliable methods. Hence, an efficient sample pretreatment procedure is necessary for extraction and preconcentration of 5-HMF from the matrix.
Objective
In this study, a new and efficient sample preparation method utilizing ultrasound-assisted-cloud point extraction (UA-CPE), indirectly followed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), was introduced for the monitoring of trace amounts of 5-HMF in honey and jam samples.
Method
With this method, hydroxylamine was used as a derivatizing agent in the presence of Mn(II) and an anionic surfactant, SDS for extraction of 5-HMF at pH 9.0. For dispersing reagents in sample solution, low amounts of mixed surfactant, triton X-45 and SDS were mixed and fast-injected into the extraction media. A cloudy solution formed, and after reaction of 5-HMF with reagents, the cloudy solution was centrifuged. The extracted 5-HMF in the surfactant-rich phase was dissolved in acidic acetone and indirectly analyzed by FAAS.
Results
The method showed a detection limit of 1.27 μg/L in linear working range of 4–240 μg/L, good precision (2.3–6.5%), and recovery rates (93.5–97%) after preconcentration of 70-fold.
Conclusions
Within this study, an accurate and reliable method for the indirect quantification of 5-HMF in selected samples was successfully developed with a sensitivity improvement factor of 30.6.
Highlights
The figures of merit for the developed indirect method were appropriate. The applicability of the method for the analysis of 5-HMF in processed foods was excellent.

Abstract
Recently, cloud point extraction (CPE) coupled with back extraction (BE) has been suggested as a promising alternative to liquid-liquid extraction. In CPE, non-ionic surfactants in aqueous solutions form micelles and the solution becomes turbid when heated to the cloud point temperature. Microwave- or ultrasonic-assisted BE can be performed after CPE and before injection of the sample for instrumental analysis by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This article reviews selected published scientific research on the application of CPE-BE to the determination of alkaloids, drugs and organophosphorus compounds from several complex matrices. This method could be scaled-up for use in forensic science.

Abstract
Two-liquid-phase reaction media have long been used in bioconversions to supply or remove hydrophobic organic reaction substrates and products to reduce inhibitory and toxic effects on biocatalysts. In case of the terminal oxyfunctionalization of linear alkanes by the AlkBGT monooxygenase the excess alkane substrate is often used as a second phase to extract the alcohol, aldehyde, and acid products. However, the selection of other carrier phases or surfactants is complex due to a large number of parameters that are involved, such as biocompatibility, substrate bioavailability, and product extraction selectivity. This study combines systematic high-throughput screening with chemometrics to correlate physicochemical parameters of a range of cosolvents to product specificity and yield using a multivariate regression model. Partial least-squares regression shows that the defining factor for product specificity is the solubility properties of the reaction substrate and product in the cosolvent, as measured by Hansen solubility parameters. Thus the polarity of cosolvents determines the accumulation of either alcohol or acid products. Whereas usually the acid product accumulates during the reaction, by choosing a more polar cosolvent the 1-alcohol product can be accumulated. Especially with Tergitol as a cosolvent, a 3.2-fold improvement in the 1-octanol yield to 18.3 mmol L-1 is achieved relative to the control reaction without cosolvents.

Abstract
Cloud point extraction (CPE) – spectrophotometric method had been adopted for the separation of atrazine using the non-ionic silicone surfactant, polysiloxane polyether, as a new approach of atrazine extractor in CPE. There were two types of polysiloxane polyether (DC 193C and OFX 0309) studied to investigate the effectiveness of these surfactants toward atrazine in CPE method. Various effects of operating parameters such as the concentration of surfactant and atrazine, addition of salt and change of temperature and pH on the extraction of atrazine have been studied in detail to find the optimum conditions. The limit of detections (LODs) and quantifications (LOQs) were in the range of 0.09–0.59 μg L−1 and 0.31–1.95 μg L−1 in water samples, respectively. The method recoveries at two spiked levels were 84–105% (CPE-OFX 0309) and 59–69% (CPE-DC 193C) with good correlation of determination (R2) ranging from 0.9927–0.9993 for both methods. The Langmuir isotherm has been used for solubilisation study of surfactant and atrazine. The thermodynamic parameters have been determined such as Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) which increases with temperature, value of enthalpy (ΔH°) and value of entropy (ΔS°) which increase with the surfactant hydrophobicity. Abstract
Abstract
This paper is focused on the phase behavior, interaction with anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate SDS, adsorption and wetting investigations of new hydroxy mixed ether nonionic surfactants HMEn. The phase diagrams of (0.1–100) %wt of HMEn (n-value is the ethoxylation number EO) at the temperature range 20–100°C have shown that the increasing of n-value raises the cloud boundary toward higher temperature. Remarkable result was obtained from the interaction between SDS and HMEB, at which the mixed system exhibits a unique homogeneity and a liquid crystal phase formation. Macroscopically, the liquid crystal region was found when the SDS concentration range between 8 and 24 mM mixed with 10% wt HMEB. The interaction between HMEn and mica was also investigated using atomic force microscopy AFM and a pronounced adsorption of HMEn on mica was observed. Moreover, contact angle results reveal that glass substrate shows strong wettability of HMEn surfactant solutions compared with polyethylene PE and polymethylmethaacrylate PMMA substrates. This wettability however also decreases with EO number.

Abstract
In this study, perstractive fermentation of intracellular Monascus pigments in nonionic surfactant micelle aqueous solution had been studied. The permeability of cell membrane modified by nonionic surfactant might have influence on the rate of export of intracellular pigments into its extracellular broth while nearly no effect on the final extracellular pigment concentration. However, the solubilization of pigments in nonionic surfactant micelles strongly affected the final extracellular pigment concentration. The solubilization capacity of micelles depended on the kind of nonionic surfactant, the super-molecule assembly structure of nonionic surfactant in an aqueous solution, and the nonionic surfactant concentration. Elimination of pigment degradation by export of intracellular Monascus pigments and solubilizing them into nonionic surfactant micelles was also confirmed experimentally. Thus, nonionic surfactant micelle aqueous solution is potential for replacement of organic solvent for perstractive fermentation of intracellular product.

Abstract
The surface activity of salts added to water is orders of magnitude lower than that of surfactants. Sodium trifluoromethanesulfonate (NaTf) produced a change in surface tension with concentration, Δγ/Δc, of -13.2 mN·L/m·mol. This value is ca. 4-fold larger than those of simple salts and that of methanesulfonate. This unexpected surface effect suggested that positively charged micelles containing Tf could exhibit interesting properties. Dodecyltrimethylammonium triflate (DTATf) had a higher Kraft temperature (37 °C) and a lower cmc (5 × 10(-3) M) and degree of dissociation (0.11) than the chloride and bromide salts of DTA. Above the Kraft temperature, at a characteristic temperature t(1), the addition of NaTf above 0.05 M to a DTATf solution induced phase separation. By increasing the temperature of the two-phase system to above t(1), a homogeneous, transparent solution was obtained at a characteristic temperature t(2). These results, together with well-known triflate properties, led us to suggest that the Tf ion pairs with DTA and that the -CF(3) group may be dehydrated in the interfacial region, resulting in new and interesting self-aggregated structures.
