Preparation of graphene oxide doped eggshell membrane bioplatform modified Prussian blue nanoparticles as a sensitive hydrogen peroxide sensor

Stimulated Full-Thickness Cutaneous Wound Healing with Bioactive Dressings of Zinc and Cobalt Ion-Doped Bioactive Glass-Coated Eggshell Membranes in a Diabetic Rabbit Model

Eggshell membrane-based biomedical applications have recently received great attention for their wound-healing properties. However, there are limited studies on diabetic wound healing. In this regard, we devised four types of composite eggshell membrane mats with nanoscale coatings of bioactive glass/Zn/Co-doped bioactive glass (ESM + BAG, ESM + ZnBAG, ESM + CoBAG, and ESM + ZnCoBAG) as wound-dressing materials for chronic nonhealing diabetic wounds. A detailed study of the physicochemical properties of the mats was conducted. In vitro studies demonstrated cytocompatibility and viability of human dermal fibroblasts on all four types of mats. The cells also attached finely on the mats with the help of cellular extensions, as evident from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and rhodamine-phalloidin and Hoechst 33342 staining of cellular components. Endowed with bioactive properties, these mats influenced all aspects of full-thickness skin wound healing in diabetic animal model studies. All of the mats, especially the ESM + ZnCoBAG mat, showed the earliest wound closure, effective renewal, and restructuring of the extracellular matrix in terms of an accurate and timely accumulation of collagen, elastin, and reticulin fibers. Hydroxyproline and sulfated glycosaminoglycans were significantly (p < 0.01, p < 0.05) higher in ESM-ZnCoBAG-treated wounds in comparison to ESM-BAG-treated wounds, which suggests that these newly developed mats have potential as an affordable diabetic wound care solution in biomedical research.

Avian Egg: A Multifaceted Biomaterial for Tissue Engineering

Most components in avian eggs, offering a natural and environmentally friendly source of raw materials, hold great potential in tissue engineering. An avian egg consists of several beneficial elements: the protective eggshell, the eggshell membrane, the egg white (albumen), and the egg yolk (vitellus). The eggshell is mostly composed of calcium carbonate and has intrinsic biological properties that stimulate bone repair. It is a suitable precursor for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite and calcium phosphate, which are particularly relevant for bone tissue engineering. The eggshell membrane is a thin protein-based layer with a fibrous structure and is constituted of several valuable biopolymers, such as collagen and hyaluronic acid, that are also found in the human extracellular matrix. As a result, the eggshell membrane has found several applications in skin tissue repair and regeneration. The egg white is a protein-rich material that is under investigation for the design of functional protein-based hydrogel scaffolds. The egg yolk, mostly composed of lipids but also diverse essential nutrients (e.g., proteins, minerals, vitamins), has potential applications in wound healing and bone tissue engineering. This review summarizes the advantages and status of each egg component in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, but also covers their current limitations and future perspectives.

Fabrication of Highly Flexible Hierarchical Polypyrrole/Carbon Nanotube on Eggshell Membranes for Supercapacitors

Flexible batteries and supercapacitors (SCs) are expected to play a crucial role in energy storage and management in portable electronic devices. In addition, use of materials based on renewable resources would allow for more affordable and sustainable gadgets. In this context, eggshell membranes (ESMs) represent a promising functional platform for production of high-performance electronic components. In this work, we use ESMs for preparing flexible SCs through the incorporation of carbon nanotubes and subsequent in situ polymerization of polypyrrole, producing a highly conductive nanostructure characterized by a porous surface that exhibits both faradic and nonfaradic mechanisms for charge storage. We have found that by controlling the conducting polymer/carbon derivative relative concentration, one can maximize the corresponding capacitance to attain values up to the order 564.5 mF/cm² (areal capacitance), 24.8 F/cm³ (volumetric capacitance), and 357.9 F/g (gravimetric capacitance). These bioinspired flexible devices exhibit a capacitance retention of 60% after 4000 cycles of charge/discharge and present negligible aging even after 500 bending repetitions (at a density of current 5 mA/cm²). The successful use of ESM-based electrodes in association with carbon derivatives/conducting polymers confirm that the exploit of biological materials offers a promising perspective for the development of new ecofriendly electronic devices.

Evaluation of a mixed anionic-nonionic surfactant modified eggshell membrane as an advantageous adsorbent for the solid-phase extraction of Sudan I-IV as model analytes

The coadsorption of mixed anionic-nonionic surfactants, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate with Triton X-100, on the surface of eggshell membrane was investigated based on adsorption isotherms to improve the solid-phase extraction performance of eggshell membrane toward organic contaminants. Results showed that even though excess Triton X-100 might inhibit the adsorption of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, a low dosage of Triton X-100 can significantly improve sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate modification and enhance the extraction efficiency of eggshell membrane from 73.7 to 100.4% because of the formation of mixed hemimicelles. The highest recovery was achieved at 2:8 (Triton X-100/sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate mass ratios), and multiple mechanisms involving π-π interactions, hydrophobic effect, and π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions contributed to the strong extraction affinity. When mixed, the Triton X-100 and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate modified eggshell membrane packed cartridge coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was applied for the simultaneous determination of trace Sudan I-IV, and low detection limits (0.16-0.26 ng/L) were achieved with satisfactory linearity (R²  > 0.999) in 10-10 000 μg/L. For real samples, Sudan II and III in one chilli sauce sample were found at 4.3 and 1.7 μg/kg. Sudan I-IV recoveries at three spiked levels were 87.4-102.9% with precisions <6.8%. Comparison with commonly used solid-phase extraction adsorbents and methods further reflected the superiorities of the proposed adsorbent in sensitivity, retention ability, and applicability.
