Organic-Solvent-Resistant Polyimide/Hydroxyapatite Mixed Matrix Membranes for Lysozyme Adsorption

This work reports new mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for the adsorption of enzymes from organic solvents. In this work, polyimide/hydroxyapatite (PI/HAP) MMMs were prepared via phase inversion method and further crosslinked with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES). The chemical and structural stability of the crosslinked PI/HAP MMMs were improved and applied for lysozyme (LZ) adsorption in organic solvent. PI/HAP MMMs were crosslinked by changing the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) concentration and crosslinking time. The optimal APTES crosslinking condition for PI/HAP MMMs is 6% of concentration for 8 h. The LZ adsorption performance was studied by changing solvent types. PI/HAP MMMs possessed a high LZ adsorption in organic-solvent-aqueous solutions, and the LZ adsorption capacity reached 34.1 mg/g. The MMMs had a high desorption capacity and recovery ability. The MMMs maintained 60% of their adsorption capacity and 58% of their desorption at the fourth cycle of adsorption and desorption. The MMMs provided a new technology for the purification and separation of enzymes or proteins by MMMs in organic solvents.

Bio-templated synthesis of porous silica nano adsorbents to wastewater treatment inspired by a circular economy

Water is an indispensable substance in human life activities. However, due to industrial discharge problems, water resources are polluted, so there is an urgent need for material and technology for wastewater treatment. This paper presents an innovative synthesis of porous silica microspheres (PSM) from a biomass template material (fish skin collagen) to treat protein from wastewater. The collagen from the biomass template was rich in amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups that effectively controlled the hydrolysis rate of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and promoted the synthesis of structured PSM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption isotherms measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to characterize the chemical composition, crystalline structure, and pore architecture of the synthesized PSM. The characterization results confirmed that the PSM were spherical with the microporous and mesoporous structure in shape and approximately 400 nm in size. Moreover, the pore size could be tuned by addition of mesitylene (TMB). The large number of silicon hydroxyl groups on the PSM surface effectively bound proteins in wastewater and greatly improved the overall absorption rate. The PSM adsorption capacity for lysozyme (LZ) was 49.5 mg/g, and the adsorption behavior was well described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Most importantly, the PSM effectively removed protein from actual industrial wastewater, thereby realizing a high value-added utilization of wastewater pollutants.

Highly Dual Antifouling and Antibacterial Ultrafiltration Membranes Modified with Silane Coupling Agent and Capsaicin-Mimic Moieties

Dual antifouling and antibacterial polysulfone(PSf)/polyethersulfone(PES) hybrid membranes were developed by the synergy of capsaicin-mimic N-(5-methyl acrylamide-2,3,4 hydroxy benzyl) acrylamide (AMTHBA) and vinyl triethylene (b-methoxy ethoxy) silane (VTMES). First, AMTHBA as a natural antimicrobial agent was incorporated into a casting solution via "microwave-assistance (MWA) in situ polymerization-blending" process to construct a hydroxyl-rich environment. Then, VTMES crosslinked to a hydroxyl-rich polymer matrix via hydrolytic condensation, and the influence of VTMES content on the hybrid membrane properties was systematically investigated. When the VTMES added amount was 1.0 wt %, the hybrid membrane achieved an optimal separation performance including a steady-state humic acid (HA) (5 mg/L) permeation flux of 326 L·m-2·h-1 and a rejection percentage of 97%. The antibacterial tests revealed that the hybrid membranes exhibited sustained bactericidal activity and effective inhibition of bacterial adhesion. Besides, the dual-functional membranes were clean as new after two-cycles filtration (with a cleaning efficiency of ~90%), indicating that the network silicone film on the surface benefits the foulant repellence. Hopefully, the dual-functional membranes constructed in this study can be applicable to the pretreatment stage of water treatment.
