Synthesis, surface properties and antimicrobial performance of novel gemini pyridinium surfactants

Self-assembly mechanism, physicochemical analyses and application performance investigations of branched alkyl glycosides with alcohol ether carboxylic acids of varied epoxide numbers

Green surfactants, specifically alkyl glycosides and fatty alcohol ether carboxylic acids, are known for their biocompatibility, multiresponsiveness, and versatile applications, garnering significant attention in the realms of green and colloid chemistry. This study systematically investigated the mechanism underlying micelle formation within aqueous solutions comprising alcohol ether carboxylic acids featuring diverse EO group chain quantities (AEC-nH, where n equals 5, 7, and 9) and branched alkyl glycosides (IG). The elucidation of these mechanisms sheds light on their prospective application properties. It was observed that the self-assembly of micelles in these hybrid systems is predominantly influenced by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic forces. The spherical-rod morphology of the micelles responds to the varying numbers of EO group chains, with an increased number of EO leading to the formation of rod-like micelles, which exhibit relative instability, while a decreased number of EO results in the formation of spherical micelles with relative stability. Additionally, by means of kinetic analysis, it was determined that the micelle formation process of the three hybrid systems is driven by enthalpy, and a mixed diffusion-kinetics adsorption mechanism is involved in the adsorption process. These findings significantly impact their application properties. This report stands as the first exploration of the synergistic mechanisms and application performance of two types of green surfactants in aqueous solutions, considering the influence of different numbers of EO group chains. Not only does it provide fundamental insights into their properties, but it also offers novel perspectives on the applications of green surface activation.

Green Synthesis, Surface Activity, Micellar Aggregation, and Foam Properties of Amide Quaternary Ammonium Surfactants

A series of amide quaternary ammonium surfactants with the formula C _n H_2n+1CONH(CH₂)₂N⁺(CH₃)₃·CH₃CO₃ ^- (n = 9, 11, 13, 15) were synthesized using a fatty acid, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, and a green reagent dimethyl carbonate. A comparative study of the four surfactants in terms of surface activity, aggregation characteristics, and foam properties was conducted. The results show that these amide quaternary ammonium surfactants reduce the surface tension of water to a minimum value of 23.69 mN·m^-1 at a concentration of 1.55 × 10^-4 mol·L^-1 and self-assemble spontaneously into aggregates, which are mostly vesicles. Furthermore, with increasing the alkyl chain length, their critical micelle concentration (CMC) values and surface tension values at the CMC (γ_CMC) decrease and then increase, and the degree of counterion binding (β) decreases. It is also found that these amide quaternary ammonium surfactants exhibit excellent foam ability and foam stability.

Hybrid electrospun scaffolds based on polylactic acid/ PAMAM dendrimer/gemini surfactant for enhancement of synergistic antibacterial ability for biomedical application

Hybrid electrospun scaffolds based on poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) / poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM-G2) dendrimer / gemini surfactant were fabricated for the enhancement of synergistic antibacterial activities. The second generation of poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM-G2) and cationic gemini surfactant were utilized to functionalize the optimum electrospun scaffolds. The gelatination process was utilized to improve the wettability of PLLA scaffolds to extend cell attachment and cell proliferation. PLLA nanofibrous scaffolds were characterized by energy dispersion X-ray (EDX), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, mechanical properties, water contact angle, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, zeta potential and antibacterial assessment. In vitro cell biocompatibility was evaluated by MTT assay and morphology of PC-12 cells cultured on hybrid nanofibrous scaffolds and gelatinized ones. The results indicated that the optimum scaffolds could successfully modify the characteristics of PLLA scaffolds leading to much more appropriate physical and chemical properties. In addition, gelatinized nanofibrous scaffolds reveal more wettability enhancing cell attachment and proliferation. Furthermore, using poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM-G2) and gemini surfactant reveals synergetic antibacterial activity due to the competition between both cationic groups of PAMAM and gemini surfactant. Finally, improved cell adhesion and cell viability on modified scaffolds were confirmed. These favorable properties give a chance for these scaffolds to be used in a wide variety of biomedical applications.

Cationic Imidazolium Amphiphiles Bearing a Methoxyphenyl Fragment: Synthesis, Self-Assembly Behavior, and Antimicrobial Activity

Novel cationic amphiphiles of the 3-alkyl-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide series bearing methoxyphenyl fragments (MPI-n) have been synthesized. Their aggregation properties in aqueous solutions, solubilization capacity, and hemolytic and antimicrobial activities have been investigated by a number of physicochemical methods. Using tensiometry, conductometry, and fluorescence spectroscopy, it was shown that the MPI-n have lower CMCs than their nonfunctionalized counterparts. The unusual alkyl-chain-length-dependent morphology of aggregates is testified for this homological series. Amphiphiles with 12, 14, and 16 alkyl tails are characterized by the formation of micellar aggregates, while a surfactant with a decyl tail is characterized by the formation of larger aggregates with lower surface curvature. The MPI-10 aggregate morphology was rationalized in terms of the packing parameter consideration and was supported by size measurements and the fluorescence probe techniques, which showed that vesicle-like aggregates in close-packing mode probably occur. MPI-n aggregates have exhibited a high solubilization capacity toward hydrophobic azo dye Orange OT. Importantly, amphiphiles studied showed (i) high bacteriostatic activity at the level of ciprofloxacin; (ii) high bactericidal action against all Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant strains; (iii) bactericidal properties against Gram-negative bacteria; and (iv) low hemolytic activity.

Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Activity of Novel Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids

In this study, a series of 10 novel 1-methyl-3-octyloxymethylimidazolium derivatives carrying various anionic moieties (4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, benzenesulfonate, carvacroloxyacetate, chloride, formate, propionate, thymoloxyacetate, vanillinoxyacetate, eugenoloxyacetate and trimethylacetate) were synthesized. Compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity against six microbe strains (Staph-ylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Candida albicans), cytotoxic activity against the mouse melanoma cell line (B16 F10), and surface active properties. All synthesized compounds exhibited antimicrobial activity (expressed as minimum inhibitory concentration; in range of 0.10–27.82 mM/L), especially against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. In addition, all compounds demonstrated cytotoxicity on B16 F10 cells (IC50 values 0.0101–0.0197 mM/L). Surface properties defined as CMC values, ranged from 0.72 to 32.35 mmol L-1. The obtained results provide an insight into the promising activity of a novel group of quaternary imidazolium derivatives having ionic liquid properties. The most potent compounds, containing a thymoloxyacetate and eugenoloxyacetate moiety, could be candidates for new antimicrobial agents or surfactants.

Cationic gemini surfactant properties, its potential as a promising bioapplication candidate, and strategies for improving its biocompatibility: A review

Gemini surfactants consist of two cationic monomers of a surfactant linked together with a spacer. The specific structure of a cationic gemini surfactant is the reason for both its high surface activity and its ability to decrease the surface tension of water. The high surface activity and unique structure of gemini surfactants result in outstanding properties, including antibacterial and antifungal activity, anticorrosion properties, unique aggregation behaviour, the ability to form various structures reversibly in response to environmental conditions, and interactions with biomacromolecules such as DNA and proteins. These properties can be tailored by selecting the optimal structure of a gemini surfactant in terms of the nature and length of its alkyl substituents, spacer, and head group. Additionally, regarding their properties, comparison with their monomeric counterparts demonstrates that gemini surfactants have higher performance efficacy at lower concentrations. Hence, less material is needed, and the toxicity is lower. However, there are some limitations regarding their biocompatibility that have led researchers to develop amino acid-based and sugar-based gemini surfactants. Owing to their remarkable properties, cationic gemini surfactants are promising candidates for bioapplications such as drug delivery systems, gene carriers, and biomaterial surface modification.

Synthesis, surface activities and aggregation properties of asymmetric Gemini surfactants

A series of Gemini surfactants with an asymmetric structure (PKO 15-3(OH)-n; n = 12, 14 and 16) were synthesized through a simple two-step reaction consisting of a ring-opening reaction followed by a quaternization reaction. The surface tension measurements indicated that the surface activities of PKO 15-3(OH)-n were higher than those of traditional single-chain and symmetrical Gemini surfactants. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from electrical conductivity measurements showed that the micellization processes of PKO 15-3(OH)-n were spontaneous and entropy-driven. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering measurements confirmed that PKO 15-3(OH)-n molecules with a higher asymmetric degree could form vesicles, in which surfactant molecules were interdigitated side-by-side in the vesicle membrane. The obtained results are not in accordance with those calculated from the critical packing theory, which can further complement the theory.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) and Ionic Liquids (ILs) as Biocides: From Simple Antiseptics to Tunable Antimicrobials

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) belong to a well-known class of cationic biocides with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. They are used as essential components in surfactants, personal hygiene products, cosmetics, softeners, dyes, biological dyes, antiseptics, and disinfectants. Simple but varied in their structure, QACs are divided into several subclasses: Mono-, bis-, multi-, and poly-derivatives. Since the beginning of the 20th century, a significant amount of work has been dedicated to the advancement of this class of biocides. Thus, more than 700 articles on QACs were published only in 2020, according to the modern literature. The structural variability and diverse biological activity of ionic liquids (ILs) make them highly prospective for developing new types of biocides. QACs and ILs bear a common key element in the molecular structure-quaternary positively charged nitrogen atoms within a cyclic or acyclic structural framework. The state-of-the-art research level and paramount demand in modern society recall the rapid development of a new generation of tunable antimicrobials. This review focuses on the main QACs exhibiting antimicrobial and antifungal properties, commercial products based on QACs, and the latest discoveries in QACs and ILs connected with biocide development.

An Overview of Current Knowledge on the Properties, Synthesis and Applications of Quaternary Chitosan Derivatives

Chitosan, a chitin-derivative polysaccharide, known for its non-toxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, presents limited applications due to its low solubility in neutral or basic pH medium. Quaternization stands out as an alternative to modify this natural polymer, aiming to improve its solubility over a wide pH range and, consequently, expand its range of applications. Quaternization occurs by introducing a quaternary ammonium moiety onto or outside the chitosan backbone, via chemical reactions with primary amino and hydroxyl groups, under vast experimental conditions. The oldest and most common forms of quaternized chitosan involve N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) and N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethyl ammonium) propyl] chitosan (HTCC) and, more recently, quaternized chitosan by insertion of pyridinium or phosphonium salts. By modifying chitosan through the insertion of a quaternary moiety, permanent cationic charges on the polysaccharide backbone are achieved and properties such as water solubility, antimicrobial activity, mucoadhesiveness and permeability are significantly improved, enabling the application mainly in the biomedical and pharmaceutical areas. In this review, the main quaternized chitosan compounds are addressed in terms of their structure, properties, synthesis routes and applications. In addition, other less explored compounds are also presented, involving the main findings and future prospects regarding the field of quaternized chitosans.

Enhancement of A Cationic Surfactant by Capping Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterization and Multiple Applications

There is scarce information on cationic surfactants’ biocidal and corrosion inhbibition effects on Slime-Forming Bacteria (SFB) isolated from oil field formation water. Therefore, this work focused on the the synthesis of a cationic surfactant (CS) to increase its features by capping different metal nanoparticles (zinc, ZnNPs-C-CS; manganese, MnNPs-C-CS and tin, SnNPs-C-CS) and used them as biocides and corrosion inhibitors. The cationic surfactant was synthesized and characterized by Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Afterwards, different nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized, and exploited to cap by the CS. The CS and the different nanoparticles capped by the CS were tested for their antimicrobial susceptibility against standard bacterial and yeast strains. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated as anti-biofilms agents against positively-developed bacterial biofilms. Moreover, the CS and the ZnNPs-C-CS, MnNPs-C-CS, and SnNPs-C-CS were assessed as potential biocides against SFB, particularly Pseudomonas sp. (isolated from contaminated formation water), and as corrosion inhibitors against cultivated salinity. The results revealed the great effect of the different CS-capped NPs as broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents at lower Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs), Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBCs), Minimum Fungicidal Concentrations (MFCs) and Minimum Biofilm Inhibitory Concentrations (MBICs), and the activities were reported in order of SnNPs-C-CS > MnNPs-C-CS > ZnNPs-C-CS > CS. Furthermore, the ZnNPs-C-CS, MnNPs-C-CS, and SnNPs-C-CS demonstrated biocidal and corrosion inhibition effects against Pseudomonas sp. at a salinity of 3.5% NaCl, with metal corrosion inhibition efficiencies of 88.6, 94.0 and 96.9%, in comparison to a CS efficiency of 85.7%. In conclusion, the present work provides a newly synthesized cationic surfactant and has enhanced its antimicrobial and its metal corrosion inhibition effects by capping different nanoparticles, and it has been successfully applied against slime-forming bacteria at a salinity of 3.5% NaCl.

Impact of Degree of Hydrophilicity of Pyridinium Bromide Derivatives on HCl Pickling of X-60 Mild Steel: Experimental and Theoretical Evaluations

Dodecyl pyridinium bromide (DDPB), tetradecyl pyridinium bromide (TDPB) and dodecyl 1,1′-bispyridinium dibromide (DDBPB) were successfully synthesized, characterized and evaluated for HCl pickling of X-60 low carbon steel. Order of corrosion inhibitions efficiencies, as revealed by both electrochemical and gravimetric studies, is TDPB > DDPB > DDBPB. The degree of hydrophilicity of inhibitors as predicted by a partition coefficient (Log P) and supported by a contact angle measurement was found to be responsible for their order of corrosion inhibition efficiencies. Adsorption of DDPB, TDPB, and DDBPB through the pyridinium nitrogen on mild steel surface was confirmed by ATR-FTIR and SEM-EDX analyses. The pyridinium nitrogen was found not to be the only factor responsible for their efficiency, but hydrophobes and the orientation of the hydrophilic ring were responsible, which incline to the deviation of experimental results and the order of Monte Carlo simulation adsorption energies. DDPB, TDPB, and DDBPB obey the Langmuir isotherm model despite major contributions of the film formed on the surface of X-60 mild steel on their overall inhibition corrosion resistance.

Cationic chitosan derivatives as potential antifungals: A review of structural optimization and applications

The increasing resistance of pathogen fungi poses a global public concern. There are several limitations in current antifungals, including few available fungicides, severe toxicity of some fungicides, and drug resistance. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new antifungals with novel targets. Chitosan has been recognized as a potential antifungal substance due to its good biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, and availability in abundance, but its applications are hampered by the low charge density results in low solubility at physiological pH. It is believed that enhancing the positive charge density of chitosan may be the most effective approach to improve both its solubility and antifungal activity. Hence, this review mainly focuses on the structural optimization strategy of cationic chitosan and the potential antifungal applications. This review also assesses and comments on the challenges, shortcomings, and prospect of cationic chitosan derivatives as antifungal therapy.
