Abstract
Strawberries spoil rapidly after harvest due to factors such as the ripening process, weight loss, and, most importantly, microbial contamination. Traditionally, several methods are used to preserve strawberries after harvest and extend their shelf life, including thermal, plasma, radiation, chemical, and biological treatments. Although these methods are effective, they are a concern from the perspective of safety and consumer acceptance of the treated food. To address these issues, more advanced environment-friendly technologies have been developed over the past decades, including modified and controlled atmosphere packaging, active biopolymer-based packaging, or edible coating formulations. This method can not only significantly extend the shelf life of fruit but also solve safety concerns. Some studies have shown that combining two or more of these technologies can significantly extend the shelf life of strawberries, which could significantly contribute to expanding the global supply chain for delicious fruit. Despite the large number of studies underway in this field of research, no systematic review has been published discussing these advances. This review aims to cover important information about postharvest physiology, decay factors, and preservation methods of strawberry fruits. It is a pioneering work that integrates, relates, and discusses all information on the postharvest fate and handling of strawberries in one place. Additionally, commercially used techniques were discussed to provide insight into current developments in strawberry preservation and suggest future research directions in this field of study. This review aims to enrich the knowledge of academic and industrial researchers, scientists, and students on trends and developments in postharvest preservation and packaging of strawberry fruits.

Abstract
Sodium alginate (SA) biopolymeric films have various limitations such as poor mechanical properties, high vapor permeability, lack of antibacterial activity, excessive burst release, and weak cell adhesion. To overcome these limitations, a strategy involving the integration of nanofillers into an SA film matrix is explored. In this context, a cost-effective iron-containing carbon nano biocomposite (FeCNB) nanofiller is developed using a solvent-free technique. This nanocomposite is successfully incorporated into the alginate film matrix at varying concentrations (0.05, 0.1, and 0.15%) aimed at enhancing its physicochemical and biological properties for biomedical applications. Characterization through FESEM and BET analyses confirms the porous nature of the FeCNB. EDX shows the FeCNB's uniform distribution upon its integration into the film matrix, albeit without strong chemical interaction with SA. Instead, hydrogen bonding interactions become apparent in the FTIR spectra. By incorporating the FeCNB, the mechanical attributes of the films are improved and the water vapor permeability approaches the desired range (2000-2500 g/m2day). The film's swelling ratio reduction contributes to a decrease in water permeability. The antibacterial activity and sustained release property of the FeCNB-incorporated film are established using tetracycline hydrochloride (TCl), a model drug. The drug release profile resembled Korsmeyer-Peppas's release pattern. In vitro assessments via the MTT assay and scratch assay on NIH-3T3 cells reveal that FeCNB has no adverse effects on the biocompatibility of alginate films. The cell proliferation and adhesion to the SA film are significantly enhanced after infusion of the FeCNB. The in vivo study performed on the rat model demonstrates improved wound healing by FeCNB-impregnated films. Based on the comprehensive findings, the proposed FeCNB-incorporated alginate films prove to be a promising candidate for robust skin repair.

Abstract
A smart film was developed to detect the freshness of pork by incorporating blueberry anthocyanins (BAs) and hinokitiol (HIN) loaded zeolite-imidazolium framework (HIN@ZIF-8) with into a sodium alginate matrix, and its microstructure and physicochemical properties were studied. The SA matrix was doped with BAs and HIN@ZIF-8 nanoparticles (SA-BAs/HIN@ZIF-8) to increase its tensile strength and reduce its water vapor permeability. HIN@ZIF-8 has low cytotoxicity, and SA-BAs/HIN@ZIF-8 membranes have long-lasting antimicrobial and highly sensitive color development properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results of pork preservation experiments showed that SA-BA/HIN@ZIF-8 could extend the shelf life of pork to 6 days at 4 ℃. E-nose evaluation experiments showed that SA-BAs/HIN@ZIF-8 could inhibit compounds that cause unpleasant and irritating odours. Therefore, SA-BAs/HIN@ZIF-8 was considered to be an effective method to improve the freshness of pork, and the results showed that it has a promising application in food preservation.

Abstract
Sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) are attracting increasing attention in the biomedical field due to their unique properties, such as antibacterial activity, free radical scavenging potential, optical properties, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Ethylenediamine passivated SQDs (ED-SQDs) were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Cytotoxicity evaluation of ED-SQDs on RAW264.7 cells showed more than 90% cell viability even at 500 μg/mL of ED-SQDs, with an established IC50 value of 880.9 μg/mL. In addition, ED-SQDs showed potent antioxidant activity in vitro, effectively scavenging ABTS and DPPH free radicals at concentrations below 100 μg/mL, comparable to ascorbic acid. ED-SQD reduced lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species in macrophages, lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inactivated LPS-activated STAT3. In addition, ED-SQD increased nuclear NRF2 and the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes in LPS-stimulated cells. These results reveal the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of ED-SQDs at non-toxic concentrations, providing evidence for their potential anti-inflammatory applications.

Abstract
In this study, antioxidant, and antimicrobial starch-based biocomposite films reinforced with coffee husks (S/CH) were developed by incorporating either limonene (LM) (S/CH/LM) or its oligomer derivative, poly(limonene) (PLM) (S/CH/PLM), at different concentrations (5-10 % w/w of starch). Through a comprehensive assessment of film properties, morphology, and structure, a comparative analysis between the two additives was proposed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed some defects throughout the polymer matrix after additive incorporation. The tensile strength (TS) and modulus of elasticity (ME) showed a decrease upon the inclusion of both LM and PLM, while the elongation at break (E) increased. Notably, PLM exhibited outstanding antioxidant capacity, enhancing the films by 108 % over control samples. Additionally, at just 5 % concentration, PLM effectively inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli ATCC 11775 (35.33 ± 2.52 mm) and demonstrated an impressive UV-Vis barrier, comparable to the highest amount of LM incorporated. Therefore, this research highlights the potential of coffee husk-reinforced starch biocomposites with limonene-derived additives as a promising solution for food packaging applications. The comparative analysis sheds light on the advantages of using the PLM in terms of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, contributing to the advancement of active packaging technologies.

Abstract
A cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/pullulan (PUL) based multifunctional composite film was developed for active packaging applications by incorporating Zn-doped avocado-derived carbon dots (Zn-ACDs). The incorporation of Zn-ACDs improved the interfacial compatibility and produced a dense cross-sectional structure of the composite films. The Zn-ACDs added film showed no significant difference in water vapor permeability and surface hydrophilicity compared to the neat CNF/PUL film, but the tensile strength and elongation at break increased by ~45.4 % and ~64.1 %, respectively. The addition of 5 wt% Zn-ACDs to the CNF/PUL matrix resulted in 100.0 % UV blocking properties, excellent antioxidant activity (100.0 % for ABTS and 68.0 % for DPPH), and complete eradication of foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 15313 and Escherichia coli O157:H7 after 3 h of exposure. The CNF/PUL composite film with Zn-ACDs applied to the active packaging of chicken and tofu significantly reduced the total growth of aerobic microorganisms without significantly changing the actual color of the packaged chicken and tofu for 9 days at 10°C. This study demonstrates that CNF/PUL composite films with Zn-ACDs are a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for protecting food from microbial contamination.

Abstract
Carrageenan-based sustainable active and pH-dependent color-changing composite films were fabricated by blending anthocyanin extracted from sweet potato peel (SPA) with TiO2-doped carbon dots (Ti-CDs) prepared using the biowaste of SPA extraction. The SPA and Ti-CDs were compatible with the carrageenan matrix and were uniformly dispersed in the used polymer to form a homogeneous film with increased mechanical properties. The composite film added with SPA and 3 wt% Ti-CD showed 100 % UV protection, superb antioxidant (100 % DPPH and ABTS scavenging assay), and potent antibacterial activity (complete eradication of foodborne L.monocytogenes and E. coli strains after 3 h incubation). Additionally, the composite films showed distinguishable colorimetric responses to pH 7-12 buffers and volatile ammonia. The intelligent sensing ability of the composite film was assessed through shrimp freshness monitoring, and the film's hue shifted from pink (fresh shrimp) to yellow/brown (inedible shrimp) during storage. Shrimp packaging studies have shown that composite films retard the rate of food quality change during storage and are a good indicator of shrimp spoilage. Therefore, the designed film is expected to have high applicability as a chip, and quick on-site sensor that detects seafood quality in real-time, and a highly effective multifunctional film for better product quality preservation.

Abstract
This research aims to discover a viable substitute for the common harmful plastic packaging utilized in food products. Citric acid was employed as an accessible and risk-free precursor in synthesizing graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Using the efficient carbonization technique, GQDs were obtained and subsequently transferred to nano-biofilms in varying percentages relative to natural polymers. FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and AFM analyses were conducted to examine the formation of the nano-biofilms. GQDs demonstrated optimal performance in the disk diffusion method and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical approach. Adding GQDs to starch and gelatin composite improved the physical properties of nano-biofilms such as moisture contact, swelling index, and solubility. The transparency of the films was reduced by GQDs, which reduces the transmission of visible light and plays an important role in food protection. The packaging films' weight loss due to decomposition was examined after being buried in soil for 50 days, which relieved the eco-concerns of these packaging films. To evaluate the performance of the films in inhibiting food spoilage, cherries, and cucumbers were packed with a control film and the fabricated film containing 14 wt% of GQD. After 14 days, the modified nano-biofilm was able to maintain the freshness of the samples.

Abstract
The applications of alginate derived from seaweed polysaccharide in food packaging are restricted due to their inherent deficient antibacterial, antioxidant and UV barrier properties. In this study, nitrogen-functionalized carbon dots (NCDs) with active functions (0.5-3 %) and layered clay (1 %) with barrier property were introduced to construct alginate based active films via solution casting method. The results showed that the synthesized spherical NCDs had a particle size of 2-3 nm, and the internal structure of NCDs was similar to graphene, with a large number of active groups (-NH2, -OH, etc.) on the surface. Infrared analysis revealed that NCDs could form strong hydrogen bonds with alginate matrix, which slowed down the deterioration of mechanical properties and reduced the surface wettability. With the addition of NCDs, active functions and surface hydrophobicity of the active films were enhanced significantly (P < 0.05). When the amount of NCDs reached 3 %, UV barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the active films were increased by 50.0 %, 61.1 % and 70.1 %, respectively. The addition of NCDs could enhance the anti-browning ability of alginate based coatings and extend the shelf life of banana significantly. Therefore, a suitable amount of NCDs (1-2 %) and layered clay (1 %) can synergistically improve comprehensive performance of alginate based films and promote their food packaging application used as active films/inner coatings.

Abstract
SnO2 and Zn-SnO2 nanoparticles were prepared by chemical precipitation, and the rutile phase of SnO2 was confirmed through X-ray diffraction studies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the doping of SnO2 with Zn and elucidated the surface chemistry before and after doping. The average sizes of SnO2 and Zn-SnO2 nanoparticles determined using TEM were 3.96 ± 0.85 and 3.72 ± 0.9 nm, respectively. UV-visible and photoluminescence spectrophotometry were used to evaluate the optical properties of SnO2 and Zn-SnO2 nanoparticles, and their energy gaps (Eg) were 3.8 and 3.9 eV, respectively. The antibacterial activity of these nanoparticles against Salmonella enterica and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated under dark and light conditions. Antibacterial activity was higher in light, showing the highest activity (99.5%) against S. enterica. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)/agar-based functional composite films were prepared by adding different amounts of SnO2 and Zn-SnO2 nanoparticles (1 and 3 wt % of polymers). The composite film showed significantly increased UV barrier properties while maintaining the mechanical properties, water vapor barrier, and transparency compared to the neat CMC/agar film. These composite films showed significant antibacterial activity; however, the Zn-SnO2-added film showed stronger antibacterial activity (99.2%) than the SnO2-added film (15%).

Abstract
Water-resistant and environmentally friendly sodium-alginate-based films have been investigated to develop functional materials to extend the food's shelf-life. A water-stable alginate-based film was prepared, employing both the internal and external gelation approach in the presence of CaCl2. To apply this film to food packaging and thus preserve food quality, the aim of this work is to perform a chemical and physical characterization of the proposed materials, evidencing the main features and stability under different work conditions. Water contact angle measurements showed a value of 65°, suggesting an important reduced hydrophilic character of the obtained alginate films due to the novel CaCl2-induced compacted polymer network. The film's stability was thus checked through swelling measurements in water after varying pH, temperature, and ionic strength. The film was stable at high temperatures and not pH-responsive. Only highly concentrated salt-based solutions negatively affected the proposed packaging, causing a large swelling. Furthermore, a water-based polyphenolic extract from grape (Vitis vinifera L.) pomace waste was embedded inside the films in different amounts in order to confer additional properties. The extract's polyphenolic content (evaluated from HPLC/MS-MS measurements) endowed the films' UV-light screening and enhanced antioxidant properties. These important findings suggest the additional potential role of these films in protecting food from light deterioration. The stability of these hybrid films was also checked by observation, as the polyphenols' presence did not largely alter the alginate network that occurred yet was water-resistant under the described work conditions.

Abstract
Inorganic pyrophosphate anions (PPi) play a key role in various biological processes and act as an essential indicator for physiological function evaluation and disease diagnosis. However, there is still a lack of available approaches for straightforward, robust, and convenient PPi detection. Herein, we design an on-off-on fluorescent switching nanoprobe employing Fe3+-mediated fluorescent sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) for highly robust detection of PPi. The bovine serum protein (BSA)-capped SQDs with fine water dispersibility and good optical stability are synthesized by an H2O2-assisted chemical etching reaction. Specifically, Fe3+ can strongly induce the aggregation of the SQDs into relatively larger sizes, resulting in aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching behavior. PPi can selectively bind with Fe3+ via emulative coordination and in preventing the aggregation of SQDs this is accompanied by recovery of fluorescence. The physicochemical properties of aggregated and disaggregated SQDs have been systematically investigated. Aggregation and disaggregation of the SQDs and the corresponding quenching and recovery of fluorescence occurs and guarantees the high-contrast sensing performance of the SQD system in complex and challenging aquatic environments. Our designed on-off-on nanoswitch holds great potential for the design of elemental quantum dot-based biosensors for the highly robust detection of analytes in the near future.

Abstract
The incorporation of natural fillers such as seaweed may potentially enhance the properties of biopolymer films. In this study, we investigated the effect of seaweed powder as a bio-filler in alginate-based films at different concentrations (10, 30, and 50%, w/w alginate) and particle sizes (100 and 200 μm) on the mechanical, barrier, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of alginate which are essential for food packaging applications. Initially, mechanical properties of the alginate films prepared at different temperatures were evaluated to find the optimal temperature for preparing alginate solution. The addition of seaweed powder did not have any positive effect on the mechanical properties of the alginate films. However, the barrier (water vapor transmission rate) and antioxidant properties were improved with the addition of seaweed filler regardless of concentration. In addition, selected films were prepared in plasma-activated water (PAW). The mechanical properties (tensile strength, but not elongation at break) of the films prepared with PAW improved compared to the films prepared in distilled water, while a significant decrease was observed when incorporated with the seaweed filler. The films prepared in PAW also showed improved barrier properties compared to those prepared in distilled water. The antimicrobial activity of the alginate-seaweed film-forming solution was in general more pronounced when prepared with PAW and stored at 10 °C, particularly at the highest concentration of the film-forming solution (83.3% v/v). A more pronounced inhibitory effect was observed on the Gram-positive S. aureus than on the Gram-negative E. coli, which has been attributed to the different composition and structure of the respective cell walls. This study has demonstrated the potential of seaweed filler in combination with PAW towards enhanced functionality and bioactivity of alginate films for potential food packaging applications.

Abstract
Consumers are now more concerned about food safety and hygiene following the COVID-19 pandemic. Antimicrobial packaging has attracted increased interest by reducing contamination of food surfaces to deliver quality and safe food while maintaining shelf life. Active packaging materials to reduce contamination or inhibit viral activity in packaged foods and on packaging surfaces are mostly prepared using solvent casting, but very few materials demonstrate antiviral activity on foods of animal origin, which are important in the human diet. Incorporation of silver nanoparticles, essential oils and natural plant extracts as antimicrobial agents in/on polymeric matrices provides improved antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. This paper reviews recent developments in antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral packaging incorporating natural or synthetic compounds using preparation methods including extrusion, solvent casting and surface modification treatment for surface coating and their applications in several foods (i.e., bakery products, fruits and vegetables, meat and meat products, fish and seafood and milk and dairy foods). Findings showed that antimicrobial material as films, coated films, coating and pouches exhibited efficient antimicrobial activity in vitro but lower activity in real food systems. Antimicrobial activity depends on (i) polar or non-polar food components, (ii) interactions between antimicrobial compounds and the polymer materials and (iii) interactions between environmental conditions and active films (i.e., relative humidity, oxygen and water vapor permeability and temperature) that impact the migration or diffusion of active compounds in foods. Knowledge gained from the plethora of existing studies on antimicrobial polymers can be effectively utilized to develop multifunctional antimicrobial materials that can protect food products and packaging surfaces from SARS-CoV-2 contamination.

Abstract
Polymeric materials including plastic and paper are commonly used as packaging for bakery products. The incorporation of active substances produces functional polymers that can effectively retain the quality and safety of packaged products. Polymeric materials can be used to produce a variety of package forms such as film, tray, pouch, rigid container and multilayer film. This review summarizes recent findings and developments of functional polymeric packaging for bakery products. Functional polymerics are mainly produced by the incorporation of non-volatile and volatile active substances that effectively retain the quality of packaged bakery products. Antimicrobial agents (either synthetic or natural substances) have been intensively investigated, whereas advances in coating technology with functional materials either as edible coatings or non-edible coatings have also preserved the quality of packaged bakery products. Recent patents demonstrate novel structural packaging designs combined with active functions to extend the shelf life of bakery products. Other forms of active packaging technology for bakery products include oxygen absorbers and ethanol emitters. The latest research progress of functional polymeric packaging for bakery products, which provides important reference value for reducing the waste and improving the quality of packaged products, is demonstrated. Moreover, the review systematically analyzed the spoilage factors of baked products from physicochemical, chemical and microbiological perspectives. Functional packaging using polymeric materials can be used to preserve the quality of packaged bakery products.
