Non-Traditional Data Mining Applications in Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) Databases

This study examines time-sensitive applications of data mining methods to facilitate claims review processing and provide policy information for insurance decision-making vis-à-vis the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) databases. In order to obtain the best payment management, a hybrid mining (HM) approach, which has been grounded on the extant knowledge of data mining projects and health insurance domain knowledge, is proposed. Through the integration of data warehousing, online analytic processing, data mining techniques and traditional data analysis in the healthcare field, an easy-to-use decision support platform, which will assist in directing the health insurance decision-making process, is built. Drawing from lessons learned within a case study setting, results showed that not only is HM approach a reliable, powerful, and user-friendly platform for diversified payment decision support, but that it also has great relevance for the practice and acceptance of evidence-based medicine. Essentially, HM approach can provide a critical boost to health insurance decision support; hence, future researchers should develop and improve the approach combined with their own application systems.

A comprehensive identification-evidence based alternative for HIV/AIDS treatment with HAART in the healthcare industries

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

The HIV/AIDS-related issue has given rise to a priority concern in which potential new therapies are increasingly highlighted to lessen the negative impact of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) in the healthcare industry. With the motivation of "medical applications," this study focuses on the main advanced feature selection techniques and classification approaches that reflect a new architecture, and a trial to build a hybrid model for interested parties.

METHODS

This study first uses an integrated linear-nonlinear feature selection technique to identify the determinants influencing HAART medication and utilizes organizations of different condition-attributes to generate a hybrid model based on a rough set classifier to study evolving HIV/AIDS research in order to improve classification performance.

RESULTS

The proposed model makes use of a real data set from Taiwan's specialist medical center. The experimental results show that the proposed model yields a satisfactory result that is superior to the listed methods, and the core condition-attributes PVL, CD4, Code, Age, Year, PLT, and Sex were identified in the HIV/AIDS data set. In addition, the decision rule set created can be referenced as a knowledge-based healthcare service system as the best of evidence-based practices in the workflow of current clinical diagnosis.

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights the importance of these key factors and provides the rationale that the proposed model is an effective alternative to analyzing sustained HAART medication in follow-up studies of HIV/AIDS treatment in practice.

H2RM: A Hybrid Rough Set Reasoning Model for Prediction and Management of Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose level that results either from a deficiency of insulin produced by the body, or the body’s resistance to the effects of insulin. Accurate and precise reasoning and prediction models greatly help physicians to improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment procedures of different diseases. Though numerous models have been proposed to solve issues of diagnosis and management of diabetes, they have the following drawbacks: (1) restricted one type of diabetes; (2) lack understandability and explanatory power of the techniques and decision; (3) limited either to prediction purpose or management over the structured contents; and (4) lack competence for dimensionality and vagueness of patient’s data. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes a novel hybrid rough set reasoning model (H2RM) that resolves problems of inaccurate prediction and management of type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). For verification of the proposed model, experimental data from fifty patients, acquired from a local hospital in semi-structured format, is used. First, the data is transformed into structured format and then used for mining prediction rules. Rough set theory (RST) based techniques and algorithms are used to mine the prediction rules. During the online execution phase of the model, these rules are used to predict T1DM and T2DM for new patients. Furthermore, the proposed model assists physicians to manage diabetes using knowledge extracted from online diabetes guidelines. Correlation-based trend analysis techniques are used to manage diabetic observations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the existing methods with 95.9% average and balanced accuracies.

Modeling hybrid rough set-based classification procedures to identify hemodialysis adequacy for end-stage renal disease patients

Healthcare problems observed in the majority of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients regarding hemodialysis (HD) treatment are serious issues for the Taiwanese healthcare services, and an interesting topic is thus the adequacy of HD therapy. This study successfully models a hybrid procedure to measure HD adequacy to assess therapeutic effects and to explore the relationship between accuracy and coverage for interested parties. The proposed model has better accuracy, a lower standard deviation, and fewer attributes than the listed methods under various evaluation criteria. The study results are useful to subsequent researchers to develop suitable applications, and to ESRD patients and their doctors to ensure satisfactory medical quality.
