Privacy Preserved Cervical Cancer Detection Using Convolutional Neural Networks Applied to Pap Smear Images

Image processing has enabled faster and more accurate image classification. It has been of great benefit to the health industry. Manually examining medical images like MRI and X-rays can be very time-consuming, more prone to human error, and way more costly. One such examination is the Pap smear exam, where the cervical cells are examined in laboratory settings to distinguish healthy cervical cells from abnormal cells, thus indicating early signs of cervical cancer. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network- (CNN-) based cervical cell classification using the publicly available SIPaKMeD dataset having five cell categories: superficial-intermediate, parabasal, koilocytotic, metaplastic, and dyskeratotic. CNN distinguishes between healthy cervical cells, cells with precancerous abnormalities, and benign cells. Pap smear images were segmented, and a deep CNN using four convolutional layers was applied to the augmented images of cervical cells obtained from Pap smear slides. A simple yet efficient CNN is proposed that yields an accuracy of 0.9113% and can be successfully used to classify cervical cells. A simple architecture that yields a reasonably good accuracy can increase the speed of diagnosis and decrease the response time, reducing the computation cost. Future researchers can build upon this model to improve the model's accuracy to get a faster and more accurate prediction.

Multivariate analysis in data science for the geospatial distribution of the breast cancer mortality rate in Colombia

This research is framed in the area of biomathematics and contributes to the epidemiological surveillance entities in Colombia to clarify how breast cancer mortality rate (BCM) is spatially distributed in relation to the forest area index (FA) and circulating vehicle index (CV). In this regard, the World Health Organization has highlighted the scarce generation of knowledge that relates mortality from tumor diseases to environmental factors. Quantitative methods based on geospatial data science are used with cross-sectional information from the 2018 census; it's found that the BCM in Colombia is not spatially randomly distributed, but follows cluster aggregation patterns. Under multivariate modeling methods, the research provides sufficient statistical evidence in terms of not rejecting the hypothesis that if a spatial unit has high FA and low CV, then it has significant advantages in terms of lower BCM.

A new brain tumor diagnostic model: Selection of textural feature extraction algorithms and convolution neural network features with optimization algorithms

Brain tumors are one of the most dangerous diseases that affect human health and maybe result in death. Detection of brain tumors can be made by using biopsy. However, this is an invasive procedure. It is an extremely dangerous procedure because it can cause bleeding and damage certain brain functions. For this reason, the type and the stage of the disease can be determined after a detailed examination by medical imaging techniques made by field experts. In this study, a computer-based hybrid diagnostic model with high accuracy rate is proposed to diagnose normal brain and brain having types of tumors from brain images obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. This diagnostic model consists of three stages. In the first stage, the features of the images were obtained with two different traditional methods, which are widely used in the literature, and the results were examined. In the second stage, different convolutional neural networks that can learn comprehensive information about images were used and the results were tested by obtaining the features of the images. In the third stage, all the feature sets that are obtained were combined, and genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization technique and artificial bee colony optimization techniques were used for feature selection. The common features of the optimization techniques were used only once. Thus, metaheuristic optimization algorithms were used for feature selection and distinctive features of the images appeared. Feature sets were classified using support vector machine kernels. The proposed diagnostic model is better than the directly used methods with an accuracy rate of 98.22%. Consequently, this method can also be used in clinic service to diagnose tumor by using images of brain MRI.

PredMHC: An Effective Predictor of Major Histocompatibility Complex Using Mixed Features

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a large locus on vertebrate DNA that contains a tightly linked set of polymorphic genes encoding cell surface proteins essential for the adaptive immune system. The groups of proteins encoded in the MHC play an important role in the adaptive immune system. Therefore, the accurate identification of the MHC is necessary to understand its role in the adaptive immune system. An effective predictor called PredMHC is established in this study to identify the MHC from protein sequences. Firstly, PredMHC encoded a protein sequence with mixed features including 188D, APAAC, KSCTriad, CKSAAGP, and PAAC. Secondly, three classifiers including SGD, SMO, and random forest were trained on the mixed features of the protein sequence. Finally, the prediction result was obtained by the voting of the three classifiers. The experimental results of the 10-fold cross-validation test in the training dataset showed that PredMHC can obtain 91.69% accuracy. Experimental results on comparison with other features, classifiers, and existing methods showed the effectiveness of PredMHC in predicting the MHC.
