Theoretical study on the electronic structures and photophysical properties of a series of dithienylbenzothiazole derivatives

Tuning of the Singlet-Triplet Energy Gap of Donor-Linker-Acceptor Based Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Emitters

Thermally activated delayed fluorescent emitters based on carbazole donor, benzonitrile acceptor with the linkers biphenyl, bipyridine and naphthalene are investigated using the density functional theoretical method. The molecule in which bipyridine acts as the linker with the least ΔEST is further selected for the designing of a series of D-L-A framework TADF molecules. Remarkably, the ΔEST is decreased successively by attaching the additional cyano groups at the acceptor site which is further reduced when the electron donating methoxy groups are attached at the donor site. To know the effect of substituents on ΔEST, the acceptor moiety of the D-L-A framework is modified with -F, -Cl and -CF3 substituents. The studies showed a relatively less decrement in the value of ΔEST compared to the cyano substituted molecules. However, ΔEST significantly reduced further on attaching methoxy groups at the donor site.

Exploration of violet-to-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters based on "CH/N" and "H/CN" substitutions at diphenylsulphone acceptor. A DFT study

The violet-to-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters were created employing several substituents based on 5,5-dimethyl-5,10-dihydropyrido [2,3-b][1,8] naphthyridine-diphenylsulphone (DMDHPN-DPS) called 1a via "CH/N" and "H/CN" substitutions at the diphenylsulphone acceptor (DPS) moiety. The parent compound 1a was selected from our former work after extensive research employing "CH/N" substitution on Dimethyl-acridine (DMAC) donor moiety. There is a little overlap amid the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and lowest un-occupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) due to the distribution of HOMOs and LUMOs primarily on the DMDHPN donor and the DPS acceptor moieties, respectively. It resulted in a narrower energy gap (∆E ST) between the lowest singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited state. In nearly all derivatives, the steric hindrance results in a larger torsional angle (85°-98°) between the plane of the DMDHPN and the DPS moieties. The predicted ΔE ST values of the compounds with "H/CN" substitution were lower than those of the comparable "CH/N" substituents, demonstrating the superiority of the reversible inter-system crossing (RISC) from the T1 → S1 state. All derivatives have emission wavelengths (λ em) in the range of 357-449 nm. The LUMO → HOMO transition energies in the S1 states are lowered by the presence of -CN groups or -N = atoms at the ortho or meta sites of a DPS acceptor unit, causing the λ em values to red-shift. Furthermore, the λ em showed a greater red-shift as there were more-CN groups or -N = atoms. Three of the derivatives named 1b, 1g, and 1h, emit violet (394 nm, 399 nm, and 398 nm, respectively), while two others, 1f and 1i, emit blue shade (449 nm each) with reasonable emission intensity peak demonstrating that these derivatives are effective violet-to-blue TADF nominees. The lower ΔE ST value for derivative 1i (0.01 eV) with λ em values of 449 nm make this molecule the finest choice for blue TADF emitter amongst all the studied derivatives. We believe our research might lead to the development of more proficient blue TADF-OLEDs in the future.

Exploring the Influence of Engineering the Linker between the Donor and Acceptor Fragments on Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Characteristics

We have expounded the unique molecular design architecture for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials based on a donor-linker-acceptor-linker-donor (D-L-A-L-D) framework, which can be employed as predecessors of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. Different from traditional donor-acceptor-type (D-A-type) TADF scaffolds, the D-L-A-L-D structural design avoids direct coupling amid the D and A fragments allowing the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) to be spatially separated. It results in a reduced overlap between HOMOs and LUMOs, thus realizing fairly a slight singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE _ST) and higher photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ). We revealed that manipulating a linker between D and A fragments in intramolecular charge transfer compounds is an auspicious approach for realizing small ΔE _ST. Herein, we report a group of organic electroluminescent D-L-A-L-D-type molecules with different electron-donating and electron-accepting moieties using density functional theory calculations and time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Two types of linkers, the π-conjugated phenylene (-C₆H₄-) and aliphatic alkyl chains or σ-spacer (-CH₂- and -CH₂-CH₂-), were exploited between D and A fragments. In principle, the conjugation in D-π-A-π-D-type molecules and hyperconjugation in D-σ-A-σ-D type molecules encourage the spatial separation of the HOMO-LUMO causing a reduction in the ΔE _ST. All the designed molecules show a blue-shift in the emission wavelengths (λ_em) over the directly linked parent molecules except DPA-DPS-C₆H₄ and BTPA-DPS-C₆H₄ which show a red-shift. Violet-blue to green-yellow (376-566 nm) λ_em was observed from all of the investigated molecules. Other important properties that affect the efficiency of emission quantum yields like frontier molecular orbital analysis, natural population analysis, electron excitation analysis, exciton binding energies, ionization potentials, electronic affinities, and reorganization energies of the designed molecules were also inspected. We are confident that our work will effectively give a straightforward and distinctive approach to building incredibly effective TADF-OLEDs and a new perspective on their structural design.

Effect of different end-capped donor moieties on non-fullerenes based non-covalently fused-ring derivatives for achieving high-performance NLO properties

A series of derivatives (DOCD2-DOCD6) with D-π-A configuration was designed by substituting various efficient donor moieties via the structural tailoring of o-DOC6-2F. Quantum-chemical approaches were used to analyze the optoelectronic properties of the designed chromophores. Particularly, M06/6-311G(d,p) functional was employed to investigate the non-linear optical (NLO) response (linear polarizability ⟨α⟩, first (β_tot) and second ([Formula: see text]_tot) order hyperpolarizabilities) of the designed derivatives. A variety of analyses such as frontier molecular orbital (FMO), absorption spectra, transition density matrix (TDMs), density of states (DOS), natural bond orbital (NBO) and global reactivity parameters (GRPs) were employed to explore the optoelectronic response of aforementioned chromophores. FMO investigation revealed that DOCD2 showed the least energy gap (1.657 eV) among all the compounds with an excellent transference of charge towards the acceptor from the donor. Further, DOS pictographs and TDMs heat maps also supported FMO results, corroborating the presence of charge separation states along with efficient charge transitions. NBO analysis showed that π-linker and donors possessed positive charges while acceptors retained negative charges confirming the D-π-A architecture of the studied compounds. The λ_max values of designed chromophores (659.070-717.875 nm) were found to have broader spectra. The GRPs were also examined utilizing energy band gaps of E_HOMO and E_LUMO for the entitled compounds. Among all the derivatives, DOCD2 showed the highest values of β_tot (7.184 × 10^-27 esu) and [Formula: see text]_tot (1.676 × 10^-31 esu), in coherence with the reduced band gap (1.657 eV), indicating future potentiality for NLO materials.

Rational design of cyclopenta[b]naphthalenes for better optoelectronic applications and their photophysical properties using DFT/TD-DFT methods

The optical properties of cyclopenta[b]naphthalenes (CPNs) can be fine-tuned by suitable substitutions and DFT calculations show that they can make efficient OLEDs.

Effect of donor strength of extended alkyl auxiliary groups on optoelectronic and charge transport properties of novel naphtha[2,1-b:6,5-b']difuran derivatives: simple yet effective strategy

The present study spotlights the designing of new derivatives of 2,7-bis (4-octylphenyl) naphtho [2,1-b:6,5-b'] difuran (C8-DPNDF) by substituting the alkyl groups (methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, and heptyl groups) at para position. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods are employed to optimize the molecular structures in ground and first excited states, respectively. Several electro-optical properties including hole/electron reorganization energies (λh/λe), electron affinities (EAs), ionization potentials (IPs), molecular electrostatic potentials (MEP), and frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) have been evaluated. Furthermore their transfer integrals and intrinsic mobilities values have also been calculated. From this study, it is found that hole mobility of octyl containing derivative is raised to 4.69 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). Moreover with attaching octyl group, hole transfer integral values have also been enhanced in newly designed derivatives. The balanced hole and electron reorganization energies, and improved transfer integrals lead to enhanced mobility in derivatives with octyl group, highlighting them as an efficient hole transfer material. Unlike the other electro-optical properties, the intrinsic hole mobility has increased because of transfer integral values of octyl containing derivative C8-DPNDF due to the dense and close crystal packing of C8-DPNDF. However, photostability of furan-based materials has not changed by increasing length of extended alkyl chain. Thus our present investigation highlights the importance of alkyl auxiliary groups that are often neglected/replaced with simple methyl group to save computation costs. How does the increment of hetero-cyclic conjugated moieties affect electro-optical and charge transport properties of novel naphtha-difuran derivatives? A computational approach

We have investigated computationally the effects of π-conjugation extension on naphtha[2,1-b:6,5-b'] difuran (DPNDF); where we increase the number of fused NDF (central core) and furan rings in the parent molecule. The molecular structures of all analogues have been optimized at the ground (S0) and first excited (S1) states using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), respectively. Then highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs), photophysical properties, adiabatic/vertical electron affinities (EAa)/(EAv), adiabatic/vertical ionization potentials (IPa)/(IPv), and hole/electron reorganization energies λh/λe have been investigated. The effect of NDF and furan rings on structural and electro-optical properties has also been studied. Our calculated reorganization energies of 1a, 1b, and 2c reveal them, materials with balanced hole/electron charge transport, whereas 2a and 2b are good hole-transport materials. By increasing the number of furan rings; the photostability was augmented in 2a, 2b, and 2c.

Theoretical studies on electronic structures and photophysical properties of anthracene derivatives as hole-transporting materials for OLEDs

The electronic structures and photophysical properties of anthracene derivatives as hole-transporting materials (HTM) in OLEDs have been studied by DFT and TD-DFT methods. Thiophene and triphenylamine (TPA) moieties are used as substituents in anthracene based HTMs providing FATn and FAPn compounds (n=1-2), respectively. The calculated electronic levels by B3LYP show proper energy matching of FAPn and hole-injecting layer (HIL), indicating that the hole-transports of the FAPn compounds are better than the FATn compounds. The photophysical properties calculated by TD-B3LYP elucidate that TPA in FAPn compounds acts as electron donating group and induces charge transfer character in the absorptions. Furthermore, the calculated ionization potential (IP), electron affinity (EA) and reorganization energies also revealed that the extended FAP2 compound has the highest charge-transporting ability among the studied compounds. The calculated results are consistent to our experimental observations showing that FAP2 exhibits bright fluorescence with highest quantum yield in electroluminescent devices. Understanding of these properties is useful for further design of new HTMs of desired properties, such as high efficiency and stability.

Influence of push–pull configuration on the electro-optical and charge transport properties of novel naphtho-difuran derivatives: a DFT study

By a push–pull strategy, highly efficient and photostable naphtho-difuran derivatives were designed to get improved intrinsic electron mobility (1.13 cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹).

Theoretical study of phenylene-thiophene oligomers: structure-properties relationship

Theoretical results including geometrical characteristics, electronic structures, photophysical parameters (lowest excitation energies, electron affinities (EAs), ionization potentials (IPs), maximum of absorption and emission) and vibrational modes of some new oligomers, based on phenylene-thiophene motives, are investigated using Density Functional Theory DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) approach. The electronic and optical properties of phenylene-based derivatives can be tuned through the insertion of thiophene in the main oligomers backbone as well as the addition of alkoxy-substituent groups on 2 and 5 positions on phenylene groups. It can be noticed, that different conformational behaviors and steric effects take place. Then, an increase in conjugation length induces a decrease in the gaps energy and a bathochromic shift of absorption/emission spectra. Based on these computed results, which are consistent with the available experimental data, the correlation structure-properties is better understood, where these nanostructures show a great potential for opto-electronic devices.
