On the photochromic properties of dithienylethenes grafted on gold clusters

Electric Properties of Photochromic Molecules Physisorbed on Silver and Copper Nanoparticles

This paper investigates the electric properties of the photochromic dihydroazulene/vinylheptafulvene system as it is physisorbed onto silver and copper nanoparticles. Our focus is on how the polarizability and hyperpolarizability of the dihydroazulene, s-cis-vinylheptafulvene, and s-trans-vinylheptafulvene molecules depend on molecular orientation with respect to the nanoparticles, the molecule-cluster separation, and the type of nanoparticle. The computational approach utilizes a combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical method in which the molecules are treated quantum mechanically while the nanoparticles are treated with a simpler classical method. The molecules are described with density functional theory. The electric properties are calculated using response theory utilizing the long-range-corrected functional CAM-B3LYP and the correlation consistent basis set aug-cc-pVDZ. The atoms of the nanoparticles are represented using atomic polarizabilities. The interactions between the nanoparticles and the molecular systems are calculated using a polarizable embedding scheme after which the molecular properties are calculated with time-dependent density functional theory. The results show that the electric properties are indeed affected by the presence of the nanoparticles. It is also clear that it is the hyperpolarizabilities that change the most while the polarizabilities are less affected. Furthermore, the influence of the nanoparticles on the molecules depends heavily on the relative molecular orientation with respect to the nanoparticles and molecular conformation. Finally, it is observed that a copper nanoparticle has a larger influence on the molecular systems than a silver nanoparticle.

Optical Properties of Diarylethenes with TD-DFT: 0-0 Energies, Fluorescence, Stokes Shifts, and Vibronic Shapes

This contribution is an investigation of both the structures and optical properties of a set of 14 diverse, recently synthesized diarylethenes using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) at the ωB97X-D/6-31G(d) level of theory. The linear response (LR) and state-specific (SS) versions of the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) have been adopted to account for the bulk solvation effects and their relative performances were critically accessed. It is shown, for the first time in the case of nontrivial diarylethenes, that TD-DFT provides good agreement between the experimental absorption-fluorescence crossing points (AFCPs) and their theoretical counterparts when a robust model accounting for both geometrical relaxation and vibrational corrections is used instead of the vertical approximation. On the other hand, the theoretical estimates for the Stokes shifts based on the vertical transition energies were found to be in disagreement with respect to experiment, prompting us to simulate the absorption/emission vibronic band shapes. It is proved that difficulties associated with the breakdown of the harmonic approximation in Cartesian coordinates exist for the investigated system, and we show how they can be at least partially overcome by means of a vertical approach including Duschinsky effects. Our results provide a valuable basis to rationalize the experimental vibronic structure of both emission and absorption bands and are expected to be a significant asset to the understanding of the optical properties of diarylethene derivatives.

Dye chemistry with time-dependent density functional theory

In this perspective, we present an overview of the determination of excited-state properties of "real-life" dyes, and notably of their optical absorption and emission spectra, performed during the last decade with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We discuss the results obtained with both vertical and adiabatic (vibronic) approximations, choosing relevant examples for several series of dyes. These examples include reproducing absorption wavelengths of numerous families of coloured molecules, understanding the specific band shape of amino-anthraquinones, optimising the properties of dyes used in solar cells, mimicking the fluorescence wavelengths of fluorescent brighteners and BODIPY dyes, studying optically active biomolecules and photo-induced proton transfer, as well as improving the properties of photochromes.

Density functional theory study of the conformation and optical properties of hybrid Au(n)-dithienylethene systems (n = 3, 19, 25)

We present a theoretical study of Aun-dithienylethene hybrid systems (n = 3, 19, 25), where the organic molecule is covalently linked to a nanometer-scaled gold nanoparticle (NP). We aim at gaining insights on the optical properties of such photochromic devices and proposing a size-limited gold aggregate model able to recover the optical properties of the experimental system. We thus present a DFT-based calculation scheme to model the ground-state (conformation, energetic parameters) and excited-state properties (UV-visible absorption spectra) of this type of hybrid systems. Within this framework, the structural parameters (adsorption site, orientation, and internal structure of the photochrome) are found to be slightly dependent on the size/shape of the gold aggregate. The influence of the gold fragment on the optical properties of the resulting hybrid system is then discussed with the help of TD-DFT combined with an analysis of the virtual orbitals involved in the photochromic transitions. We show that, for the open hybrid isomer, the number of gold atoms is the key parameter to recover the photoactive properties that are experimentally observed. On the contrary, for hybrid closed systems, the three-dimensional structure of the metallic aggregate is of high impact. We thus conclude that Au25 corresponds to the most appropriate fragment to model nanometer-sized NP-DTE hybrid device.

A DFT study of a new class of gold nanocluster-photochrome multi-functional switches

The structural and electronic properties of dithienylethene photochromic molecules grafted onto a Au₂₅ nanocluster are reviewed and electron/energy transfers are discussed with the help of (TD-)DFT calculations.
