Abstract
CONTEXT The new series of donor-π-acceptor dyes have been designed using pyridine derivatives as a donor group and thienothiophene as a π-spacer group, which were linked via 10 acceptor groups. The highest occupied molecular orbital energies range from - 6.177 to - 5.786 eV, whereas the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energies range from - 2.181 to - 3.664 eV. A6 dye has smaller energy gap, lower hardness, higher electrophilicity index, and good photovoltaic performance than other sensitizers. The lowest dihedral angle is observed in A1, A2, A6, A7, and A8 which are appropriate for intramolecular charge transfer between the molecules. The A8 has higher light harvesting efficiency, which increases the photovoltaic efficiency of the designed dye. The A6, A7, and A8 dyes spend less time in the excited state, which means they emit photons more efficiently than other dyes. The interaction between donor to π-spacer (red line) parts of the dyes has the bonding interaction (positive), and π-spacer to acceptor (blue line) parts of the dyes have the bonding and antibonding (negative) behaviours. The dyes A5 and A9 have 305.79 and 357.71 times higher β0 values than urea (0.781 × 10-30 esu) molecules. The spectral properties of the A6 dye strongly affect the structural modification. METHODS The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approach B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) basic set were used to optimize the designed dyes. All the calculations are performed using Gauss view 6.0 and Gaussian 09 software. The density of state spectrum is plotted using Gauss sum 2.6.

Abstract
In this study, we systematically explored the impact of varying the number of thiophene groups on the hydrogen bond interaction and excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) processes in flavonoid derivatives (STF, DTF, and TTF) using the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. Initially, a thorough analysis of the optimized geometric structures revealed that the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the S1 state is enhanced and gradually weakened as the number of thiophene groups increases. To gain a deeper understanding of the hydrogen bond interaction, topological analysis, interaction region indicator scatter plots, and isosurface plots were employed. These images provide further insights that align with the structural analysis. Additionally, we observed a red-shift in the electronic spectra (absorption and fluorescence spectra), which is primarily attributed to the narrowing of the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, as elucidated by the frontier molecular orbitals. Furthermore, a combined analysis between the hole-electron distribution and the transition density matrix heat map shows that electron excitation involves the unidirectional charge-transfer mechanism. In the end, by conducting relaxed potential energy curve scans, we found that an increase in the number of thiophene groups elevates the energy barrier for ESIPT, making it more challenging for the reaction. In summary, our study underscores the vital effect of thiophene-substituted numbers in modulating the ESIPT process, which is able to provide valuable insights for the design and synthesis of desired organic fluorescent probes in the future.

Abstract
There are still challenges in the preparation of difunctional stereoregular polydienes, especially for the construction of initiating chain-end functionalization. Coordinative chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) provides a way to achieve the goal but usually requires sophisticated functionalized catalysts as well as expensive chain transfer agents (CTAs). In this work, heteroleptic aluminum with oligo(dienyl) substituents (oligo-Al agents) were readily prepared by living anionic polymerization (LAP) technique. The oligo-Al agents used in Nd-mediated CCTPs of dienes exhibit highly selective alkylation and transalkylation features. Kinetics and transfer efficiency studies using 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, 1 H-13 C HSQC, and Dosy NMR analyses revealed that the resulting polydienes possess substituents at the initiating chain-end that have transferred from the oligo-Al agents. The functionalization efficiency of the initiating chain-end is up to 99 %, and the molar mass regulation efficiency of heteroleptic aluminum is higher than that of the traditional CTA Ali Bu2 H (0.608 vs. 0.410). Based on the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose a mechanism in which allylic-Al acts as an efficient alkylating moiety in catalyst preformation and also as an effective transfer agent in polymerization. Taking advantage of these features, di-functionalized polyisoprene, polybutadiene, and poly(isoprene-co-butadiene) can be facilely synthesized.

Abstract
We present a detailed relaxometric and computational investigation of three Gd(III) complexes that exist in solution as an equilibrium of two species with a different number of coordinated water molecules: [Gd(H2O)q]3+ (q = 8, 9), [Gd(EDTA)(H2O)q]- and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]- (q = 2, 3). 1H nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) data were recorded from aqueous solutions of these complexes using a wide Larmor frequency range (0.01-500 MHz). These data were complemented with 17O transverse relaxation rates and chemical shifts recorded at different temperatures. The simultaneous fit of the NMRD and 17O NMR data was guided by computational studies performed at the DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2 levels, which provided information on Gd⋯H distances, 17O hyperfine coupling constants and the zero-field splitting (ZFS) energy, which affects electronic relaxation. The hydration equilibrium did not have a very important effect in the fits of the experimental data for [Gd(H2O)q]3+ and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]-, as the hydration equilibrium is largely shifted to the species with the lowest hydration number (q = 8 and 2, respectively). The quality of the analysis improves however considerably for [Gd(EDTA)(H2O)q]- upon considering the effect of the hydration equilibrium. As a result, this study provides for the first time an analysis of the relaxation properties of this important model system, as well as accurate parameters for [Gd(H2O)q]3+ and [Gd(CDTA)(H2O)q]-.

Abstract
A detailed computational study of hypothetical sandwich dysprosium double-decker complexes, bridged by various numbers of aliphatic linkers, was performed to evaluate the effect of the structural modifications on their ground-state magnetic sublevels and assess their potential as candidates for single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The molecular structures of seven complexes were optimized using the TPSSh functional, and the electronic structure and magnetic properties were investigated using the complete active space self-consistent field method (CASSCF). Estimates of the magnetic moment blocking barrier (Ueff) and blocking temperatures (TB) are reported. In addition, a new method based on computed derivatives of effective demagnetization barriers Ueff with respect to vibrational normal modes was introduced and applied to evaluate the impact of spin-phonon coupling on the SMM properties. On the basis of the computed parameters, we have identified promising candidates with properties superior to those of the existing single-molecule magnets.

Abstract
We present a set of donor radii for the rare-earth cations obtained from the analysis of structural data available in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) and wave function approaches (NEVPT2) demonstrate that the Ln-donor distances can be broken down into contributions of the cation and the donor atom, with the minimum in electron density (ρ) that defines the position of (3,-1) critical points corresponding well with Shannon's crystal radii (CR). Subsequent linear fits of the experimental bond distances for all rare earth cations (except Pm3+) afforded donor radii (rD) that allow for the prediction of Ln-donor distances regardless of the nature of the rare-earth cation and its oxidation state. This set of donor radii can be used to rationalize structural data and identify particularly weak or strong interactions, which has important implications in the understanding of the stability and reactivity of complexes of these metal ions. A few cases of incorrect atom assignments in X-ray structures were also identified using the derived rD values.

Abstract
A thorough investigation of Ln3+ complexes with more than one inner-sphere water molecule is crucial for designing high relaxivity contrast agents (CAs) used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study accomplished a comparative stability analysis of two hexadentate (H3cbda and H3dpaa) and two heptadentate (H4peada and H3tpaa) ligands with Ln3+ ions. The higher stability of the hexadentate H3cbda and heptadentate H4peada ligands has been confirmed by the binding affinity and Gibbs free energy analysis in aqueous solution. In addition, energy decomposition analysis (EDA) reveals the higher binding affinity of the peada4- ligand than the cbda3- ligand towards Ln3+ ions due to the higher charge density of the peada4- ligand. Moreover, a mechanistic overview of water exchange kinetics has been carried out based on the strength of the metal-water bond. The strength of the metal-water bond follows the trend Gd-O47 (w) > Gd-O39 (w) > Gd-O36 (w) in the case of the tris-aquated [Gd(cbda)(H2O)3] and Gd-O43 (w) > Gd-O40 (w) for the bis-aquated [Gd(peada)(H2O)2]- complex, which was confirmed by bond length, electron density (ρ), and electron localization function (ELF) at the corresponding bond critical points. Our analysis also predicts that the activation energy barrier decreases with the decrease in bond strength; hence k ex increases. The 17O and 1H hyperfine coupling constant values of all the coordinated water molecules were different, calculated by using the second-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH2) approach. Furthermore, the ionic nature of the bonding in the metal-ligand (M-L) bond was confirmed by the Quantum Theory of Atoms-In-Molecules (QTAIM) and ELF along with energy decomposition analysis (EDA). We hope that the results can be used as a basis for the design of highly efficient Gd(iii)-based high relaxivity MRI contrast agents for medical applications.

Abstract
1,4,7,10-Tetraazacyclododecane-N,N′,N″,N‴-tetraacetic acid (H4DOTA) is a prominent chelating ligand with potential applications in various fields, from radiotherapy to the separation of fission products. The present study explores the stability, structure, and bonding properties of its complexes with tetravalent actinides (An = Th, U, Np, Pu) using density functional theory and relativistic multireference calculations. Neutral complexes prefer to form symmetric (C4) structures with DOTA. The first coordination sphere of the actinide ions is readily saturated by a weakly bonded H2O ligand. The latter ligand reduces the molecular symmetry while exerting only marginal effects on the properties of the parent complex. An-ligand bonding is mainly electrostatic, but there are also significant charge-transfer contributions from DOTA to the An 6d/5f orbitals. The charge-transfer interactions and the covalent character of bonding increase gradually in the order of Th < U < Np < Pu, as indicated by analysis of the electron density distribution using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules.

Abstract
AbstractThe complexes of selected radionuclides relevant for nuclear medicine (InIII, BiIII, LuIII, AcIII and in addition LaIII for comparative purposes) with the octadentate (6,6′-((9-hydroxy-1,5-bis(methoxycarbonyl)-2,4-di(pyridin-2-yl)-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-3,7-diyl)bis(methylene))dipicolinic acid) ligand, H2bispa2, have been studied by density functional theory calculations modelling both isolated and aqueous solution conditions. The properties in focus are the encapsulation efficiency of the ligand for the different-size metals (M), the differences in bonding with the various MIII ions analysed using Bader’s atoms in molecules theory and the possibility and characteristics of nona- and decacoordination by H2O ligands. The computed results confirmed strong steric effects in the case of the In complex excluding higher than octacoordination. The studied properties depend strongly on the interplay of the sizes and electronic structures of the MIII ions. The computations support high stability of the complexes in aqueous solution, where also the solvation energies of the MIII ions (as dissociation products) play a significant role.

Abstract
AbstractThe structural and bonding properties of Bi and Ac complexes with cyclen-based chelating ligands have been studied using relativistic DFT calculations in conjunction with TZ2P all-electron basis sets. Besides the parent cyclen ligand, the study has covered its extensions with pyridine-type (Lpy), carboxylate (DOTA, DOTPA), picolinate (MeDO2PA) and phosphonate (DOTMP) pendant arms. The effect of the cyclen ring size has been probed by increasing it from [12]aneN4 to [16]aneN4. Additional extensions in the DOTA complexes included the H2O ligand at the 9th coordination site as well as the p-SCN-Bn substituent (a popular linker to the targeting vector). The study focuses on the complex stability, the nature of bonding and the differences between Ac and Bi in the complexes. The metal–ligand interactions have been analysed by the Extended Transition State method combined with Natural Orbitals of Chemical Valence theory and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules models.

Abstract
The wide range of optical and magnetic properties of lanthanide(III) ions is associated with their intricate electronic structures which, in contrast to lighter elements, is characterized by strong relativistic effects and spin-orbit coupling. Nevertheless, computational methods are now capable of describing the ladder of electronic energy levels of the simpler trivalent lanthanide ions, as well as the lowest energy term of most of the series. The electronic energy levels result from electron configurations that are first split by spin-orbit coupling into groups of energy levels denoted by the corresponding Russell-Saunders terms. Each of these groups are then split by the ligand field into the actual electronic energy levels known as microstates or sometimes mJ levels. The ligand-field splitting directly informs on the coordination geometry and is a valuable tool for determining the structure and thus correlating the structure and properties of metal complexes in solution. The issue with lanthanide complexes is that the determination of complex structures from ligand-field splitting remains a very challenging task. In this paper, the optical spectra-absorption, luminescence excitation, and luminescence emission-of ytterbium(III) solvates were recorded in water, methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The electronic energy levels, that is, the microstates, were resolved experimentally. Subsequently, density functional theory calculations were used to model the structures of the solvates, and ab initio relativistic complete active space self-consistent field calculations (CASSCF) were employed to obtain the microstates of the possible structures of each solvate. By comparing the experimental and theoretical data, it was possible to determine both the coordination number and solution structure of each solvate. In water, methanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide, the solvates were found to be eight-coordinated and have a square antiprismatic coordination geometry. In DMSO, the speciation was found to be more complicated. The robust methodology developed for comparing experimental spectra and computational results allows the solution structures of homoleptic lanthanide complexes to be determined.

Abstract
In this contribution, we report the synthesis, characterization and luminescence-magnetic properties of Ln-clusters (Ln = Gd3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+) using a new pyridine-pyrazole functionalized ligand fitted with a chromophoric phenanthroline backbone. The unorthodox N-rich ligand forms isostructural trinuclear lanthanide complexes with a topology that closely resembles two interdigitating hairpins. The clusters crystallize in chiral space groups and also exhibit chirality for bulk samples, which were further confirmed using solid state CD spectra. Magnetic studies on the complexes reveal their interesting features while the Gd cluster shows a significant cryogenic magnetic cooling behaviour with a moderately high magnetic entropy change of -23.42 J kg-1 K-1 at 7 T and 2 K. On the other hand, Eu and Tb complexes exhibit interesting fluorescence properties. The compounds were subsequently used as fluorescent probes for the imaging of human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF7) cells. Live cell confocal microscopy images show that the complexes penetrate beyond the usual cytoplasm region and can be useful in imaging the nucleus region of MCF7 cells.

H2O coordination in macropa complexes of f elements (Ac, La, Lu): feasibility of the 11th coordination site. Struct Chem 2021. Abstract
AbstractThe feasibility of an additional ligand coordination at the 11th coordination site of actinium, lanthanum, and lutetium ions in 10-fold coordinated macropa complexes has been studied by means of density functional theory calculations. The study covered the two main macropa conformers, Δ(δλδ)(δλδ) and Δ(λδλ)(λδλ), favoured by larger (Ac3+, La3+) and smaller (Lu3+) ions, respectively. At the molecular level, the coordination of H2O is the most favourable to the largest Ac3+ while only slightly less to La3+. Protonation of the picoline arms enhances the coordination by shifting the metal ion closer to the open site of the ligand. The choice of macropa conformer has only a slight influence on the strength and bonding properties of the H2O coordination. Aqueous solution environment decreases considerably the energy gain of H2O coordination at the 11th coordination site.

Abstract
The complex formation of actinium (Ac3+) and californium (Cf3+) ions with macropa (a promising ligand for medical applications, e.g., in targeted α therapy) has been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work is focused on the structural and bonding properties, the latter on the basis of charge transfer data and topological properties of the electron density distribution. The effect of water solvent on the energetics has been investigated using the SMD model. A comparative analysis with the related properties of two representative lanthanide (La, Lu) complexes has been performed.

Abstract
Lanthanides (Ln3+) are critical materials used for many important applications, often in the form of coordination compounds. Tuning the thermodynamic stability of these compounds is a general concern, which is not readily achieved due to the similar coordination chemistry of lanthanides. Herein, we report two 18-membered macrocyclic ligands called macrodipa and macrotripa that show for the first time a dual selectivity toward both the light, large Ln3+ ions and the heavy, small Ln3+ ions, as determined by potentiometric titrations. The lanthanide complexes of these ligands were investigated by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, which revealed the occurrence of a significant conformational toggle between a 10-coordinate Conformation A and an 8-coordinate Conformation B that accommodates Ln3+ ions of different sizes. The origin of this selectivity pattern was further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which show the complementary effects of ligand strain energy and metal-ligand binding energy that contribute to this conformational switch. This work demonstrates how novel ligand design strategies can be applied to tune the selectivity pattern for the Ln3+ ions.

Abstract
The luminescent and photochemical properties of europium(III) cinnamates [Eu(Cin)3]n (I) and Eu(Cin)3·(phen) (II) were investigated in theoretical and experimental aspects. The high photostability of the complex I was explained. The complex II displays weak luminescence and low photostability in spite of the presence of a powerful antenna ligand 1,10-phenantroline in its coordination sphere. The unexpected luminescent and photochemical properties of europium(III) cinnamates were interpreted by the quantum chemistry methods. It was revealed that inclusion of phen molecule into Eu(Cin)3 complex results in lengthening of Eu-Cin distances that promotes weakening of antenna effect. In the process of photoexcitation of this complex noticeable lengthening of Eu-Cin-2 bond takes place and Cin-3 ligand is detached from the molecule that is the cause of low photostability and weak luminescence of II.

Abstract
In this review, lanthanide chelating tags and their applications to pseudocontact shift NMR spectroscopy as well as analysis of residual dipolar couplings are covered. A complete overview is presented of DOTA-derived and non-DOTA-derived lanthanide chelating tags, critical points in the design of lanthanide chelating tags as appropriate linker moieties, their stability under reductive conditions, e.g., for in-cell applications, the magnitude of the anisotropy transferred from the lanthanide chelating tag to the biomacromolecule under investigation and structural properties, as well as conformational bias of the lanthanide chelating tags are discussed. Furthermore, all DOTA-derived lanthanide chelating tags used for PCS NMR spectroscopy published to date are displayed in tabular form, including their anisotropy parameters, with all employed lanthanide ions, CB-Ln distances and tagging reaction conditions, i.e., the stoichiometry of lanthanide chelating tags, pH, buffer composition, temperature and reaction time. Additionally, applications of lanthanide chelating tags for pseudocontact shifts and residual dipolar couplings that have been reported for proteins, protein-protein and protein-ligand complexes, carbohydrates, carbohydrate-protein complexes, nucleic acids and nucleic acid-protein complexes are presented and critically reviewed. The vast and impressive range of applications of lanthanide chelating tags to structural investigations of biomacromolecules in solution clearly illustrates the significance of this particular field of research. The extension of the repertoire of lanthanide chelating tags from proteins to nucleic acids holds great promise for the determination of valuable structural parameters and further developments in characterizing intermolecular interactions.

Abstract
The concept of random coordination ratios, RCRs, is advanced for lanthanide complexes. RCRs describe the relative probabilities of occurrence of subsets of stereoisomers of same-symmetry point groups in the limiting situation when energetic effects are equivalent. We then introduce a method to uniquely identify the stereoisomer of the coordination polyhedron of a given crystallographic structure and introduce a notation that fully characterizes its stereochemistry in an unambiguous manner, from which absolute configuration naturally follows. De facto, the coordination chirality in lanthanide complexes is a frequently overlooked property, even though these compounds often exhibit, when luminescent, high dissymmetry factors. With our methodology, we even managed to recognize a known dilanthanide complex as a meso compound, with both metal ions functioning as stereogenic centers. To achieve these results, we enumerate all possible stereoisomers of lanthanide complexes with coordination numbers from 4 to 9 for all combinations of monodentate, symmetric and asymmetric bidentate ligands, and for several shapes of coordination polyhedra. We confirmed the number of stereoisomers for each case by means of Pólya's theorem. We further classified all stereoisomers according to their symmetry point groups and generated their Cartesian coordinates. This collection of all coordination polyhedra stereoisomer geometries, which is made available in the Supporting Information , can also be used to easily build starting-point geometries for theoretical calculations of metal complexes.

Abstract
Two double-decker complexes with annulene ligands functionalized with indolenine groups were synthesized and characterized. The position of the proton acting as a counterion on one of the four indolenine nitrogen atoms was determined by using DFT calculations. Deprotonation and protonation of the complex induced by adding a base and an acid, respectively, were monitored by using NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, a correlation among the degree of protonation of the complex, the opening of the hysteresis, and the slow relaxation time is discussed.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a cyclen-based ligand (4,10-bis[(1-oxidopyridin-2-yl)methyl]-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,7-diacetic acid=L1) containing two acetate and two 2-methylpyridine N-oxide arms anchored on the nitrogen atoms of the cyclen platform, which has been designed for stable complexation of lanthanide(III) ions in aqueous solution. Relaxometric studies suggest that the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of the Gd(III) complex may be sufficient for biological applications. A detailed structural study of the complexes by (1) H NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations indicates that they adopt an anti-Δ(λλλλ) conformation in aqueous solution, that is, an anti-square antiprismatic (anti-SAP) isomeric form, as demonstrated by analysis of the (1) H NMR paramagnetic shifts induced by Yb(III) . The water-exchange rate of the Gd(III) complex is ${k{{298\hfill \atop {\rm ex}\hfill}}}$=6.7×10(6) s(-1) , about a quarter of that for the mono-oxidopyridine analogue, but still about 50 % higher than the ${k{{298\hfill \atop {\rm ex}\hfill}}}$ of GdDOTA (DOTA=1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid). The 2-methylpyridine N-oxide chromophores can be used to sensitize a wide range of Ln(III) ions emitting in both the visible (Eu(III) and Tb(III) ) and NIR (Pr(III) , Nd(III) , Ho(III) , Yb(III) ) spectral regions. The emission quantum yield determined for the Yb(III) complex (${Q{{{\rm L}\hfill \atop {\rm Yb}\hfill}}}$=7.3(1)×10(-3) ) is among the highest ever reported for complexes of this metal ion in aqueous solution. The sensitization ability of the ligand, together with the spectroscopic and relaxometric properties of its complexes, constitute a useful step forward on the way to efficient dual probes for optical imaging (OI) and MRI.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of the ligand H2MeNO2A (1,4-bis(carboxymethyl)-7-methyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and a detailed experimental and computational study of the hyperfine coupling constants (HFCCs) on the inner-sphere water molecules of [Mn(MeNO2A)] and related Mn(2+) complexes relevant as potential contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) profiles, (17)O NMR chemical shifts, and transverse relaxation rates of aqueous solutions of [Mn(MeNO2A)] were recorded to determine the parameters governing the relaxivity in this complex and the (17)O and (1)H HFCCs. DFT calculations (TPSSh model) performed in aqueous solution (PCM model) on the [Mn(MeNO2A)(H2O)]·xH2O and [Mn(EDTA)(H2O)](2-)·xH2O (x = 0-4) systems were used to determine theoretically the (17)O and (1)H HFCCs responsible for the (17)O NMR chemical shifts and the scalar contributions to (17)O and (1)H NMR relaxation rates. The use of a mixed cluster/continuum approach with the explicit inclusion of a few second-sphere water molecules is critical for an accurate calculation of HFCCs of coordinated water molecules. The impact of complex dynamics on the calculated HFCCs was evaluated with the use of molecular dynamics simulations within the atom-centered density matrix propagation (ADMP) approach. The (17)O and (1)H HFCCs calculated for these complexes and related systems show an excellent agreement with the experimental data. Both the (1)H and (17)O HFCCs (A(iso) values) are dominated by the spin delocalization mechanism. The A(iso) values are significantly affected by the distance between the oxygen atom of the coordinated water molecule and the Mn(2+) ion, as well as by the orientation of the water molecule plane with respect to the Mn-O vector.
