Environmental and dynamical effects on the optical properties of molecular systems by time-independent and time-dependent approaches: Coumarin derivatives as test cases

Simulation of absorption and scattering spectra of crystalline organic nanoparticles with the discrete dipole approximation: Effects of crystal shape, crystal size, and refractive index of the medium

The effect of the shape (habit) of crystalline organic nanoparticles on their absorption spectra is studied by simulations using the discrete dipole approximation, focusing, in particular, on the vibronic structure of the absorption bands in the spectra. Simulations predict a significant effect that, for sufficiently small particles, can be simply rationalized by the depolarization factor. The crystal size and the refractive index of the medium in which the nanoparticles are embedded are also found to have an effect on the absorption spectra. All factors mentioned are found to influence also the spectra of scattered light. These effects, already broadly documented for metallic nanoparticles, are here demonstrated theoretically for the first time for crystalline organic nanoparticles, providing novel insight into the optical response of such particles. The effects are expected to be displayed by all organic nanoparticles, as long as they have a well-defined crystal structure and are large enough for the optical properties to be understandable using a macroscopic dielectric tensor. The effects demonstrated here should be taken into account when rationalizing differences in absorption spectra of a substance in solution and in nanoparticle form, e.g., in deducing the type of intermolecular packing. The effects are much less pronounced for optically isotropic nanoparticles.

Time-Dependent Formulation of Resonance Raman Optical Activity Spectroscopy

In this work, we extend the theoretical framework recently developed for the simulation of resonance Raman (RR) spectra of medium-to-large sized systems to its chiral counterpart, namely, resonance Raman optical activity (RROA). The theory is based on a time-dependent (TD) formulation, with the transition tensors obtained as half-Fourier transforms of the appropriate cross-correlation functions. The implementation has been kept as general as possible, supporting adiabatic and vertical models for the PES representation, both in Cartesian and internal coordinates, with the possible inclusion of Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects. Thanks to the integration of this TD-RROA procedure within a general-purpose quantum-chemistry program, both solvation and leading anharmonicity effects can be included in an effective way. The implementation is validated on one of the smallest chiral molecule (methyloxirane). Practical applications are illustrated with three medium-size organic molecules (naproxen-OCD₃, quinidine and 2-Br-hexahelicene), whose simulated spectra are compared to the corresponding experimental data.

Photochemistry and Photophysics in Silica-Based Materials: Ultrafast and Single Molecule Spectroscopy Observation

Silica-based materials (SBMs) are widely used in catalysis, photonics, and drug delivery. Their pores and cavities act as hosts of diverse guests ranging from classical dyes to drugs and quantum dots, allowing changes in the photochemical behavior of the confined guests. The heterogeneity of the guest populations as well as the confinement provided by these hosts affect the behavior of the formed hybrid materials. As a consequence, the observed reaction dynamics becomes significantly different and complex. Studying their photobehavior requires advanced laser-based spectroscopy and microscopy techniques as well as computational methods. Thanks to the development of ultrafast (spectroscopy and imaging) tools, we are witnessing an increasing interest of the scientific community to explore the intimate photobehavior of these composites. Here, we review the recent theoretical and ultrafast experimental studies of their photodynamics and discuss the results in comparison to those in homogeneous media. The discussion of the confined dynamics includes solvation and intra- and intermolecular proton-, electron-, and energy transfer events of the guest within the SBMs. Several examples of applications in photocatalysis, (photo)sensors, photonics, photovoltaics, and drug delivery demonstrate the vast potential of the SBMs in modern science and technology.

General formulation of vibronic spectroscopy in internal coordinates

Our general platform integrating time-independent and time-dependent evaluations of vibronic effects at the harmonic level for different kinds of absorption and emission one-photon, conventional and chiral spectroscopies has been extended to support various sets of internal coordinates. Thanks to the implementation of analytical first and second derivatives of different internal coordinates with respect to cartesian ones, both vertical and adiabatic models are available, with the inclusion of mode mixing and, possibly, Herzberg-Teller contributions. Furthermore, all supported non-redundant sets of coordinates are built from a fully automatized algorithm using only a primitive redundant set derived from a bond order-based molecular topology. Together with conventional stretching, bending, and torsion coordinates, the availability of additional coordinates (including linear and out-of-plane bendings) allows a proper treatment of specific systems, including, for instance, inter-molecular hydrogen bridges. A number of case studies are analysed, showing that cartesian and internal coordinates are nearly equivalent for semi-rigid systems not experiencing significant geometry distortions between initial and final electronic states. At variance, delocalized (possibly weighted) internal coordinates become much more effective than their cartesian counterparts for flexible systems and/or in the presence of significant geometry distortions accompanying electronic transitions.

Simulation of Vacuum UV Absorption and Electronic Circular Dichroism Spectra of Methyl Oxirane: The Role of Vibrational Effects

Vibrationally resolved one-photon absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra of (R)-methyl oxirane were calculated with different electronic and vibronic models selecting, through an analysis of the convergence of the results, the best compromise between reliability and computational cost. Linear-response TD-DFT/CAM-B3LYP/SNST electronic computations in conjunction with the simple vertical gradient vibronic model were chosen and employed for systematic comparison with the available experimental data. Remarkable agreement between simulated and experimental spectra was achieved for both one-photon absorption and circular dichroism concerning peak positions, relative intensities, and general spectral shapes considering the computational efficiency of the chosen theoretical approach. The significant improvement of the results with respect to smearing of vertical electronic transitions by phenomenological Gaussian functions and the possible inclusion of solvent effects by polarizable continuum models at a negligible additional cost paves the route toward the simulation and analysis of spectral shapes of complex molecular systems in their natural environment.

Virtual eyes for technology and cultural heritage: toward computational strategy for new and old indigo-based dyes

A cost-effective, robust, and reliable computational strategy is applied to simulate peak positions and band-shapes of UV-vis spectra together with the dye colours perceived by human eyes. The features of our virtual multifrequency spectrometer (VMS) relevant to this topic are sketched with special focus on the selection of density functional, vibronic model, and solvent description. Furthermore, the new VMS-Draw graphical user interface (GUI) is employed for user-friendly pre- and post-processing of the computed data. The family of indigo dyes is used as case study in view of their continued use in the field of cultural heritage, together with new promising applications for photonics and sustainable energy. After assessment of different simplified models employed in previous studies, the role of several substituents and of dimerization in tuning the colour and spectral features are analyzed in detail by means of both accurate computations and interpretative models. The results are in remarkable agreement with experiment and allow to rationalize the behaviour of this class of dyes.

Toward the design of alkynylimidazole fluorophores: computational and experimental characterization of spectroscopic features in solution and in poly(methyl methacrylate)

The possibilities offered by organic fluorophores in the preparation of advanced plastic materials have been increased by designing novel alkynylimidazole dyes, featuring different push and pull groups. This new family of fluorescent dyes was synthesized by means of a one-pot sequential bromination-alkynylation of the heteroaromatic core, and their optical properties were investigated in tetrahydrofuran and in poly(methyl methacrylate). An efficient in silico pre-screening scheme was devised as consisting of a step-by-step procedure employing computational methodologies by simulation of electronic spectra within simple vertical energy and more sophisticated vibronic approaches. Such an approach was also extended to efficiently simulate one-photon absorption and emission spectra of the dyes in the polymer environment for their potential application in luminescent solar concentrators. Besides the specific applications of this novel material, the integration of computational and experimental techniques reported here provides an efficient protocol that can be applied to make a selection among similar dye candidates, which constitute the essential responsive part of those fluorescent plastic materials.

Pigment violet 19 - a test case to define a simple method to simulate the vibronic structure of absorption spectra of organic pigments and dyes in solution

A typical quinacridone pigment, PV19, has been used to analyze the impact of several computational parameters on the UV/vis absorption band shape in solution, simulated using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory levels of approximation. These encompass, (i) the choice of exchange-correlation functional, (ii) the basis set, (iii) the method for non-equilibrium optimization of the excited state geometry, (iv) the approach for evaluating the vibronic band structure, (v) the peak broadening, and (vi) the scaling of the harmonic vibrational frequencies. Among these, the choice of exchange-correlation functional is certainly of the most importance because it can drastically modify the spectral shape. In the case of PV19, the M05-2X and to a lesser extent CAM-B3LYP XC functionals are the most efficient to reproduce the vibronic structure, confirming the important role of exact Hartree-Fock exchange. Still, these functionals are not the most reliable to predict the excitation energies and oscillator strengths, for which M05, a functional with less HF exchange, performs better. For evaluating the vibronic structure, the simple gradient method, where only one step of geometry optimization of the excited state is carried out and the gradients are used to evaluate the Huang-Rhys factors as well as to determine the excited state geometries produces a spectrum that is very similar to the ones obtained with the more involved Duschinsky and geometry methods, opening the way to a fast simulation of the UV/vis absorption spectra of pigments and dyes. Then, the effect of scaling the calculated vibrational frequencies to account for anharmonicity effects as well as for limitation of the method also impacts the shape of the vibronic spectrum and this effect depends on the method used to determine the Huang-Rhys factors. Indeed, scaling the vibrational frequencies by a factor which is typically smaller than 1.0 results in a relative decrease of the 0-1 peak intensity with respect to the 0-0 band when optimizing the geometry of the excited state whereas the effect is opposite and magnified if using the gradient method.

Ab initio simulation of pyrene spectra in water matrices
