Molecular dynamics simulation of surfactant reducing MMP between CH4 and n-decane

Reinjecting produced methane offers cost-efficiency and environmental benefits for enhances oil recovery. High minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) in methane-oil systems poses a challenge. To overcome this, researchers are increasingly focusing on using surfactants to reduce MMP, thus enhancing the effectiveness of methane injections for oil recovery. This study investigated the impact of pressure and temperature on the equilibrium interfacial tension of the CH4+n-decane system using molecular dynamics simulations and the vanishing interfacial tension technique. The primary goal was to assess the potential of surfactants in lowering MMP. Among four tested surfactants, ME-6 exhibited the most promise by reducing MMP by 14.10% at 373 K. Key findings include that the addition of ME-6 enriching CH4 at the interface, enhancing its solubility in n-decane, improving n-decane diffusion capacity, CH4 weakens n-decane interactions and strengthens its own interaction with n-decane. As the difference in interactions of n-decane with ME-6's ends decreases, the system trends towards a mixed phase. This research sets the stage for broader applications of mixed-phase methane injection in reservoirs, with the potential for reduced gas flaring and environmental benefits.

Computational Study on the Microscopic Adsorption Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates with Different Chain Lengths on Anthracite Surface

In order to explore the influence of different lengths of hydrophobic carbon chains on the diffusion characteristics of surfactants on the surface of anthracite, six linear alkyl benzene sulfonates with different hydrophobic carbon chain lengths were selected (mC, m = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18; m represents the numbers of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic carbon chain), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted. Models of surfactant-anthracite, surfactant-graphite layer, and water-surfactant-anthracite were constructed. After analyzing a series of properties such as adsorption energy, diffusion coefficient, radial distribution function (RDF), and hydrophobic tail order parameters, it was found that 12C had the highest adsorption strength on the surface of anthracite; the reason was that 12C had the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further studies had found that the hydrophobic tail chain of 12C had the strongest isotropy. The study fills the gap in the systematic study of the diffusion characteristics of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) with different chain lengths on the surface of anthracite, enriches and develops the basic theory of coal wettability, and also provides technical ideas for the design of new surfactants and new dust suppression agents.

Study on Adsorption Characteristics of Sulfonate Gemini Surfactant on Lignite Surface

In order to explore the adsorption characteristics of sulfonate gemini surfactants on the surface of lignite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and A kind of sulfonic acid bis sodium salt (S2) and the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were selected. A binary model of surfactant/lignite adsorption system and a ternary model of water/surfactant/lignite system were constructed, and a series of properties such as adsorption configuration, interaction energy, order parameters, relative concentration distribution, number of hydrogen bonds, etc., were analyzed. The results showed that the adsorption strength of S2 on the surface of lignite was higher than that of SDS. The results indicated that the large-angle molecular chain in S2 tended to become smaller, the small-angle molecular chain tended to become larger, and the angle between the molecular chains and the Z axis tended to be concentrated, making the formed network structure denser during the adsorption process. The number of hydrogen bonds in the water-coal system was 42, and the number of hydrogen bonds in the system after S2 adsorption was 15, which was much lower than the 23 hydrogen bonds in the system after SDS adsorption, and S2 could better adsorb and wrap the oxygen-containing groups on the surface of the lignite. The comparative study of the adsorption characteristics of the two surfactants on the surface of lignite can help us better understand the influence of the surfactant structure on the adsorption strength. The research results have important theoretical and practical significance for developing new surfactants, and enriching and developing the basic theory of coal wettability.

Microscopic Diffusion Characteristics of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates on the Surface of Anthracite: The Influence of Different Attachment Sites of Benzene Ring in the Backbone

In order to explore the effect of the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone of the surfactant on its diffusion characteristics on the surface of anthracite, the molecular dynamics simulation method was used, and the four isomers (m-C16, m = 2,4,6,8; m represents the attachment site of the benzene ring in the backbone) of sodium hexadecyl benzene sulfonate (SHS) were selected. Binary models of surfactant/anthracite, surfactant/graphene modified by oxygen-containing functional groups, and a ternary model of water/surfactant/anthracite were constructed. By analyzing a series of properties such as interaction energy, contact surface area, relative concentration distribution, radial distribution function, hydrophobic tail chain order parameter, etc., it is concluded that the adsorption strength of 4-C16 on the surface of anthracite is the highest; the reason is that 4-C16 has the highest degree of aggregation near the oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of anthracite. Further investigations find that 4-C16 can be densely covered on the ketone group, and the longer branch chain of 4-C16 has the highest degree of order in the Z-axis direction.

Unraveling the Role of Drug-Lipid Interactions in NSAIDs-Induced Cardiotoxicity

Cardiovascular (CV) toxicity is nowadays recognized as a class effect of non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, their mechanisms of cardiotoxicity are not yet well understood, since different compounds with similar action mechanisms exhibit distinct cardiotoxicity. For instance, diclofenac (DIC) is among the most cardiotoxic compounds, while naproxen (NAP) is associated with low CV risk. In this sense, this study aimed to unravel the role of drug-lipid interactions in NSAIDs-induced cardiotoxicity. For that, DIC and NAP interactions with lipid bilayers as model systems of cell and mitochondrial membranes were characterized by derivative spectrophotometry, fluorometric leakage assays, and synchrotron X-ray scattering. Both DIC and NAP were found to have the ability to permeabilize the membrane models, as well as to alter the bilayers’ structure. The NSAIDs-induced modifications were dependent on the lipid composition of the membrane model, the three-dimensional structure of the drug, as well as the drug:lipid molar ratio tested. Altogether, this work supports the hypothesis that NSAIDs-lipid interactions, in particular at the mitochondrial level, may be another key step among the mechanisms underlying NSAIDs-induced cardiotoxicity.

The Fats of Life: Using Computational Chemistry to Characterise the Eukaryotic Cell Membrane

Our current knowledge of the structural dynamics and complexity of lipid bilayers is still developing. Computational techniques, especially molecular dynamics simulations, have increased our understanding significantly as they allow us to model functions that cannot currently be experimentally resolved. Here we review available computational tools and techniques, the role of the major lipid species, insights gained into lipid bilayer structure and function from molecular dynamics simulations, and recent progress towards the computational modelling of the physiological complexity of eukaryotic lipid bilayers.

Impact of Additives on the Microstructural Properties of DIDMAMS Bilayers: Studied by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

To further understand the mechanism of the impact of perfume raw materials (PRMs) such as allyl heptoate (AHT) and cashmeran (CMR) on distearoyl isopropyl dimethylammonium methyl sulfate (DIDMAMS) bilayers, 90 ns molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the structure of bilayers consisting of DIDMAMS and PRMs at 350 K on the molecular scale. Structural properties such as density profiles, order parameters, radial distribution functions (RDFs), and bilayer thickness were analyzed. The bilayers appear to be the structure of the ripple phase whether PRMs are added or not. The RDF and density profiles show that CMR molecules tend to locate in the region close to head groups and AHT molecules prefer to uniformly distribute among hydrocarbon chains. The special distribution of CMR molecules results in hydrocarbon chains twining around CMR molecules. The existence of CMR molecules between bilayers and the consequent highest bilayer thickness may be the main cause of higher viscosity. We expect that this work can help to screen stable vesicular formula and understand the relationship between microstructures of the vesicles and macroscopic fluidic properties.

Role of charged lipids in membrane structures - Insight given by simulations

Lipids and proteins are the main components of cell membranes. It is becoming increasingly clear that lipids, in addition to providing an environment for proteins to work in, are in many cases also able to modulate the structure and function of those proteins. Particularly charged lipids such as phosphatidylinositols and phosphatidylserines are involved in several examples of such effects. Molecular dynamics simulations have proved an invaluable tool in exploring these aspects. This so-called computational microscope can provide both complementing explanations for the experimental results and guide experiments to fruitful directions. In this paper, we review studies that have utilized molecular dynamics simulations to unravel the roles of charged lipids in membrane structures. We focus on lipids as active constituents of the membranes, affecting both general membrane properties as well as non-lipid membrane components, mainly proteins.
