Interplay between C–H⋯O, O–H⋯X (X=C, F, Cl) and H–O⋯Y (C, Cl, F) interactions in methane–water and halogen substituted methane–water complexes: Theoretical investigations of structure and energy

Theoretical study of water-assisted reaction between methane and nitrosonium cation

The water-assisted reaction between CH4 and NO+ has been studied employing post Hartree–Fock and density functional theory methods. Two reaction pathways were considered: (i) a frontside NO+ attack on the C–H bond of methane with retention of configuration and (ii) a backside attack with inversion of configuration. The first pathway leads to a thermodynamically more favorable hydrate of N-protonated nitrosomethane, and the second one leads to its O-protonated isomer. The catalytic effect of a single water molecule is expressed in decreasing the activation energy for the elementary step by about a factor of two for the frontside mechanism and by a factor of four to five for the backside one when compared with the calculated literature data on water-free methane nitrosation. The combination of the activation strain model of reactivity and the energy decomposition analysis reveals that the activation barriers are largely determined by the relative stability of the termolecular reactant complexes. The crucial factor that stabilizes these complexes comes from the electrostatic attraction. The catalytic effect of the key water molecule is decreased with introduction of additional one or two explicit water molecules, which form a coordinate O→N bonding with NO+. On the contrary, an additional water molecule hydrogen bonded to the key catalytic water molecule enhances the catalytic effect.

Spectroscopy and radiation-induced chemistry of an atmospherically relevant CH2F2…H2O complex: Evidence for the formation of CF2…H2O complex as revealed by FTIR matrix isolation and ab initio study

Difluoromethane is considered among the environment friendly alternatives to the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons. Due to its chemical inertness and lack of UV absorption above 200 nm, this compound can easily come to the upper layers forming complexes with widely abundant atmospheric components, such as water. The radiation-induced degradation of this compound and its complexes may be significant for reliable prediction of its long-term evolution in the environment as well as for development of new ways for its removal. In this work we have studied the vibrational spectroscopic properties and mechanisms of the radiation-induced decay of the CH₂F₂⋯H₂O under the action of X-rays using matrix isolation FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The IR spectrum of the complex in an argon matrix was characterized for the first time and assigned to a hydrogen-bonded structure with a binding energy of 11.1 kJ/mol (2.65 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory). Complexation with water leads to a certain suppression of the efficiency of the radiation-induced decomposition of difluoromethane. The obtained results provide evidence for the radiation-induced formation of previously unreported CF₂⋯H₂O complex (in addition to other oxygen containing molecules, such as COF₂ and CO). As demonstrated by calculations, the new difluorocarbene complex reveals a hydrogen bond and it is characterized by a binding energy of 5.73 kJ/mol (1.37 kcal/mol) (CCSD(T)/CBS level of theory).

DFT and IsoStar Analyses to Assess the Utility of σ- and π-Hole Interactions for Crystal Engineering

The interpretation of 36 charge neutral 'contact pairs' from the IsoStar database was supported by DFT calculations of model molecules 1-12, and bimolecular adducts thereof. The 'central groups' are σ-hole donors (H2 O and aromatic C-I), π-hole donors (R-C(O)Me, R-NO2 and R-C6 F5 ) and for comparison R-C6 H5 (R=any group or atom). The 'contact groups' are hydrogen bond donors X-H (X=N, O, S, or R2 C, or R3 C) and lone-pair containing fragments (R3 C-F, R-C≡N and R2 C=O). Nearly all the IsoStar distributions follow expectations based on the electrostatic potential of the 'central-' and 'contact group'. Interaction energies (ΔEBSSE ) are dominated by electrostatics (particularly between two polarized molecules) or dispersion (especially in case of large contact area). Orbital interactions never dominate, but could be significant (∼30 %) and of the n/π→σ*/π* kind. The largest degree of directionality in the IsoStar plots was typically observed for adducts more stable than ΔEBSSE ≈-4 kcal⋅mol-1 , which can be seen as a benchmark-value for the utility of an interaction in crystal engineering. This benchmark could be met with all the σ- and π-hole donors studied.

Conformational differences and intermolecular C-H...N interactions in three polymorphs of a bis(pyridinyl)-substituted benzimidazole

The structural characterization of several polymorphic forms of a compound allow the interplay between molecular conformation and intermolecular interactions to be studied, which can contribute to the development of strategies for the rational preparation of materials with desirable properties and the tailoring of intermolecular interactions to produce solids with predictable characteristics of interest in crystal engineering. The crystal structures of two new polymorphs of 5,6-dimethyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1-[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]-1H-benzimidazole, C₂₀H₁₈N₄, are reported. The previously reported polymorph, (1) [Geiger & DeStefano (2014). Acta Cryst. E70, o365], exhibits the space group C2/c, whereas polymorphs (2) and (3) presented here are in the Pnma and P-1 space groups, respectively. The molecular structures of the three forms differ in their orientations of the 2-(pyridin-2-yl)- and 1-[(pyridin-2-yl)methyl]- substituents. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the relative energies of the molecule in the three conformations follows the order (1) < (2) < (3), with a spread of 10.6 kJ mol^-1. An analysis of the Hirshfeld surfaces shows that the three polymorphs exhibit intermolecular C-H...N interactions, which can be classified into six types. Based on DFT calculations involving pairs of molecules having the observed interactions, the C-H...N energy in the systems explored is approximately -11.2 to -14.4 kJ mol^-1.
