Abstract
Sub-nanometer neutral chromium oxide clusters were produced in the gas phase through laser ablation and their low-lying excited state lifetimes were measured using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations relate the trends in experimental lifetimes to the cluster's electronic structure. The photoexcited (CrO2)n (n < 5) cluster transients with the absence of up to four O atoms (CrnO2n-x, x < 5) exhibit a ∼30 fs and sub-ps lifetime, attributed to instantaneous metallic e-e scattering and vibrationally mediated charge carrier relaxation, respectively. A long-lived (>2 ps) response is found in both small and clusters with low O content, indicating that terminal CrO bonds facilitate efficient excited state relaxation. The ∼30 fs transient signal fraction grows nearly linearly with oxidation, matching the amount of O-2p to Cr-3d charge transfer character of the photoexcitation and suggesting a gradual transition between semiconducting and metallic behavior in chromium oxide clusters at the molecular level. The results presented herein suggest that the photocatalytic properties of chromium oxides can be tunable based on size and oxidation.

Abstract
Different isomers of (CrO3)n (n = 1-10) cluster units have been investigated using Density functional approach. Their stability and reactivity has been analyzed by plotting chemical potential and HOMO-LUMO gap as a function of cluster size. The CrO3, (CrO3)6 and (CrO3)9 are identified as the most reactive species. Reactivity of each atomic site in the cluster has been interpreted using local reactivity descriptors called Fukui Function plots. The clusters have been doped with sulfur by adding it as substitutional impurity, effect of sulfur doping has been understood by analyzing excitation energies and absorption wavelengths using time dependent-DFT(TDDFT) at CAM-B3LYP level of theory.

A QM/MM study on ethene and benzene oxidation using silica-supported chromium trioxide. J Mol Model 2019; 25:17. Abstract
Oxidation of ethene and benzene by chromium oxide (CrO3) supported on silica (SiO2) was investigated by employing hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) model calculations. Various mechanistic possibilities, such as C-H or C=C bond activation of hydrocarbons, were investigated in detail for the reaction of ethene and benzene with CrO3 grafted on a silica surface. While activation of the C-H bond leads to the formation of alcohol, epoxide is obtained via C=C bond activation. The complete reaction routes for the formation of each product were traced and found to be exothermic. Thermochemical analysis were performed to predict temperature conditions for the reaction to be feasible in a forward direction. The study provides conclusive evidence to aid experimentalists for further research on oxidation of hydrocarbons using silica-supported metal oxides. Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) computations of the electronic structures of undoped, B- and N-doped CNT(3,3), CNT(5,5) carbon nanotubes, and graphene with adsorbed chromate anions CrO42- were performed within molecular cluster approach. Relaxed geometries, binding energies, charge differences of the adsorbed CrO42- anions, and electronic wave function contour plots were calculated using B3LYP hybrid exchange-correlation functional. Oscillator strengths of electronic transitions of CrO42- anions adsorbed on the surfaces of studied carbon nanostructures were calculated by the TD-DFT method. Calculations reveal covalent bonding between the anion and the adsorbents in all studied adsorption configurations. For all studied types of adsorbent structures, doping with N strengthens chemical bonding with CrO42- anions, providing a ~2-eV increase in binding energies comparatively to adsorption of the anion on undoped adsorbents. Additional electronic transitions of CrO42- anions appear in the orange-green spectral region when the anions are adsorbed on the N-doped low-diameter carbon nanotubes CNT(3,3) and CNT(5,5).
