Non-covalent interaction in benzene and substituted benzene: A theoretical study

The nature of the bonding between a neutral group 12 member (Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3) ring and a noble gas atom was explored using quantum chemical simulations. Natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, and molecular electrostatic potential surface analysis were also used to investigate the type of interaction between the noble gas atom and the metal rings (Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3). The Zn3, Cd3 and Hg3 rings are bonded to the noble gas through non-covalent interactions, which was revealed by the non-covalent interaction index. Additionally, energy decomposition analysis reveals that dispersion energy is the key factor in stabilizing these systems.

Directionality of Halogen-Bonds: Insights from 2D Energy Decomposition Analysis

Halogen bonds are typically observed to have a linear arrangement with a 180° angle between the nucleophile and the halogen bond acceptor X-R. This linearity is commonly explained using the σ-hole model, although there have been alternative explanations involving exchange repulsion forces. We employ two-dimensional Distortion/Interaction and Energy Decomposition Analysis to examine the archetypal H3 N⋯X2 halogen bond systems. Our results indicate that although halogen bonds are predominantly electrostatic, their directionality is largely due to decreased Pauli repulsion in linear configurations as opposed to angled ones in the I2 and Br2 systems. As we move to the smaller halogens, Cl2 and F2 , the influence of Pauli repulsion diminishes, and the energy surface is shaped by orbital interactions and electrostatic forces. These results support the role of exchange repulsion forces in influencing the directionality of strong halogen bonds. Additionally, we demonstrate that the 2D Energy Decomposition Analysis is a useful tool for enhancing our understanding of the nature of potential energy surfaces in noncovalent interactions.

Synthesis of novel 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic hydrazones as selective chemosensors for cyanide ions

The development of an effective and selective chemosensor for CN^- ions has become the need of the hour due to their hazardous impact on the environment and humans. Herein, we report the synthesis of two novel chemosensors, IF-1 and IF-2 based on 3-hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide and aldehyde derivatives that have shown selective sensing of CN^- ions. IF-2 exhibited exclusive binding with CN^- ions that is further confirmed by the binding constant value of 4.77 × 10⁴ M^-1 with a low detection limit (8.2 μM). The chemosensory potential is attributed to deprotonation of the labile Schiff base center by CN^- ions that results in a color change from colorless to yellow as visible by the naked eye. Accompanying this, a DFT study was also performed in order to find the interaction between the sensor (IF-1) and its ions (F^-). A notable charge transfer from 3-hydroxy-2-naphthamide to 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-methylphenol, was indicated by the FMO analysis. The QTAIM analysis revealed that in the complex compound, the strongest pure hydrogen-hydrogen bonding was observed between H53 and H58, indicated by a ρ value of +0.017807. Due to its selective response, IF-2 can be successfully used for making test strips for the detection of CN^- ions.

Beryllium bonding with noble gas atoms

Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to investigate the nature of the bonding between a neutral Be₃ ring and noble gas atom. Electronic structure calculation for these complexes was carried out at different computational levels in association with natural bond orbital, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, electron localization function, symmetry adapted perturbation theory, and molecular electrostatic potential surface analysis of Be₃ complexes. The Be atoms in the Be₃ moiety are chemically bonded to one another, with the BeBe bond dissociation energy being ~125 kJ mol^-1 . The Be₃ ring interacts with the noble gases through non-covalent interactions. The binding energies of the noble gas atoms with the Be₃ ring increases with increase in their atomic number. The non-covalent interaction index, density overlap region indicator and independent gradient model analyses reveal the presence of non-covalent inter-fragment interactions in the complexes. Energy decomposition analysis reveals that dispersion plays the major role towards stabilizing these systems.

Revealing the incorporation of an NH2 group into the edge of carbon dots for H2O2 sensing via the C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction

We investigated hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) sensing on NH₂-functionalized carbon dots (Cdots) for three different -NH₂ positions, and the N atom was found to be the active site using a quantum computational approach. B3LYP and 6-31G(d,p) were used for density functional theory (DFT) ground state calculations, whereas CAM-B3LYP and the same basis set were used in time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) excited state calculations. Structural optimization showed that the H₂O₂ is chemisorbed on 1-sim via a C-N⋯H hydrogen bond interaction with an adsorption energy of -10.61 kcal mol^-1. Mulliken atomic charge distributions and electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis were both used to determine reactivity of the molecules at the atomic level. For in-depth analysis of the ground states, we utilized Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) index analysis. In addition, we also present UV-vis absorption spectra and charge transfer lengths to understand the mechanism of H₂O₂ sensing in excited states. Based on the molecular and electronic properties of the NH₂-Cdots, it was shown that 1-sim is a potential candidate for use as an electrochemical sensor for H₂O₂ sensing. Whereas 3-sim is believed to be a potential candidate for use as an optical sensor of H₂O₂ based on the UV-vis characteristics via photoinduced charge transfer.

Computational design of a chitosan derivative for improving the color stability of anthocyanins: Theoretical calculation and experimental verification

The objective of this study was to design a chitosan (CS) derivative with good protective effect on the color stability of anthocyanins (ACNs) under accelerated storage. The binding affinities and interactions of 12 organic acids with cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) were evaluated using quantum mechanics method. Sinapic acid (SinA) showing the strongest interaction with C3G was selected for the synthesis of SinA-grafted-CS (SinA-g-CS), which was further characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR. Under accelerated storage conditions (40 °C), SinA-g-CS significantly improved the color stability of black rice anthocyanins (BRA) in the presence of l-ascorbic acid (pH 3.0), and showed a better protective effect than that of CS. Moreover, molecular dynamics simulation analysis showed SinA-g-CS formed more hydrogen bonds with C3G than CS. Our study demonstrated that SinA-g-CS designed by computational methods can effectively protect ACNs from degradation, and has the potential to be used in ACN-rich beverages as a replacement for CS.

Synthesis Characterization and X-ray Structure of 2-(2,6-Dichlorophenylamino)-2-imidazoline Tetraphenylborate: Computational Study

The title compound tetraphenylborate salt of clonidine (Catapres®), 2-(2,6-dichlorophenylamino)-2-imidazoline tetraphenylborate (3), was prepared in 76 % yield by the reaction of 2-(2,6-dichlorophenylamino)-2-imidazoline hydrochloride (clonidine hydrochloride) (1) with sodium tetraphenylborate (2) in deionized water through anion exchange reaction at ambient temperature. The structure of the title borate salt was characterized by UV, thermal analysis, mass and NMR analyses. White crystals of (3) suitable for an X-ray structural analysis were obtained by slow growing from acetonitrile. The molecular structure of the titled compound (3) was crystallized in the acetonitrile, P21/c, a = 9.151 (3) Å, b = 12.522 (3) Å, c = 25.493 (6) Å, β = 105.161 (13)° V = 2819.5 (13) Å3, Z = 4. A DFT quantum chemistry calculation method was employed to investigate the interaction mechanism of clonidine with tetraphenylborate. The stable configurations of the complexes of clonidine with tetraphenylborate with electrostatic interactions were obtained. Finally, the interaction strength and type of the complexes were studied through the reduced density gradient (RDG) function. This study provides new theoretical insight into the interaction mechanism and a guide for screening and designing the optimal clonidine and tetraphenylborate reacting to form the complex.

Synthesis and Tetraphenylethylene-Based Aggregation-Induced Emission Probe for Rapid Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds in Aqueous Media

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) can be used to construct fluorescent probes with typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior for next-generation sensing applications. McMurry coupling and Suzuki cross coupling strategies provided the desired sensor thiophene-substituted tetraphenylethylene (THTPE). The synthesized TPE analogues were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Maximum AIE of THTPE was observed in 90% water (H2O/THF) content due to extensive formation of aggregates. The AIE properties of THTPE have been utilized for facile detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) (1.0 nM) through a fluorescence quenching mechanism. A paper strip adsorbed with the AIE-based THTPE fluorophore is developed for rapid and convenient detection of NAC-based analytes. Further, interaction of THTPE with analytes is also studied via Gaussian software at the DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Interaction energy, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analyses are studied by using the same method. Computational results revealed that nitrobenzene (NB) has the strongest interaction while 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) exhibits the least interaction with the sensor molecule. These computational results clearly demonstrate good agreement with experimental data.

In this research, the impact of non-covalent interactions on the FT-IR spectrum and structural, electronic, topological and vibrational properties of hybrid 4-methylbenzylammonium nitrate (4MBN) have been studied combining B3LYP/CC-PVTZ calculations with molecular docking. 4MBN was synthesized and characterized by using the FT-IR spectrum while the optimized structures in gas phase and in ethanol and aqueous solutions have evidenced monodentate coordination between the nitrate and methylbenzylammonium groups, in agreement with that experimental determined for this species by X-ray diffraction. Here, non-covalent interactions were deeply analyzed in terms of topological parameters (AIM), electron localization function (ELF), localized orbital locator (LOL), Hirshfeld surface and reduced density gradient (RDG) method. Weak interactions such as H-bonds, VDW and steric effect in 4MBN were visualized and quantified by the independent gradient density (IGM) based on the promolecular density. The hyper-conjugative and the delocalization of charge in 4MBN have been elucidated by natural bonding orbital (NBO) while its chemical reactivity was studied and discussed by using molecular electrostatic potential surface (MESP), frontier molecular orbital (FMOs), density of state (DOS) and partial density of state (PDOS). The complete vibrational assignments of 69 vibration modes expected for 4MBN are reported together with the scaled force constants while the electronic transitions were evaluated by TD-DFT calculations in ethanol solution. Thermal analysis (DTA and DSC) was also determined. Molecular docking calculations have suggested that 4MBN presents biological activity and could act as a good inhibitor against schizophrenia disease.

Cyclic versus straight chain oligofuran as sensor: A detailed DFT study

This study presents a novel approach for exploring the sensitivity and selectivity of cyclic oligofuran (5/6/7CF) toward gaseous analytes and their comparison with straight chain analogues (5/6/7SF). The work is not only vital to understand the superior sensitivity but also for rational design of new sensors based on cyclic ring structures of oligofuran. Interaction of cyclic and straight chain oligofuran with NH₃, CO, CO₂, N₂H₄, HCN, H₂O₂, H₂S, CH₄, CH₃OH, SO₂, SO₃ and H₂O analytes is studied via DFT calculation at B3LYP-D3/6-31++G (d, p) level of theory. The sensitivity and selectivity are illustrated by the thermodynamic parameters (E_bind, SAPT0 energies, NCI analysis), electronic properties (H-L gap, percentage of average energy gap, CHELPG charge transfer, DOS spectra), and UV-Vis analysis. All these properties are simulated at B3LYP/6-31G (d) level of theory while UV-Vis is calculated at TD-DFT method. Cyclic oligofurans have high binding energies with analytes compared to 5/6/7SF which corresponds to higher sensitivity of 5/6/7CF. Furthermore, the cyclization of oligofuran significantly improves the sensitivity and selectivity of the system. Alteration in electronic properties of 5/6/7CF and 5/6/7SF is remarkably high upon complexation with SO₂ and SO₃. Further the stability of rings (5, 6 and 7 membered cyclic oligofurans) and their SO₃ complexes is also confirmed by molecular dynamics calculations. The findings of the work clearly suggest that the cyclic geometry enhances not only sensitivity but also selectivity of conducting polymers (oligofuran).
