Anion⋯π interaction in oxoanion-graphene complex using coronene as model system: A DFT study

Density functional theory study of doped coronene and circumcoronene as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries

Density functional theory calculations are carried out to investigate the adsorption properties of Li+ and Li on twenty-four adsorbents obtained by replacement of C atoms of coronene (C24H12) and circumcoronene (C54H18) by Si/N/BN/AlN units. The molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) analysis show that such replacements lead to an increase of the electron-rich environments in the molecules. Li+ is relatively strongly adsorbed on all adsorbents. The adsorption energy of Li+ (Eads-1) on all adsorbents is in the range of - 42.47 (B12H12N12) to - 66.26 kcal/mol (m-C22H12BN). Our results indicate a stronger interaction between Li+ and the nanoflakes as the deepest MESP minimum of the nanoflakes becomes more negative. A stronger interaction between Li+ and the nanoflakes pushes more electron density toward Li+. Li is weakly adsorbed on all adsorbents when compared to Li+. The adsorption energy of Li (Eads-2) on all adsorbents is in the range of - 3.07 (B27H18N27) to - 47.79 kcal/mol (C53H18Si). Assuming the nanoflakes to be an anode for the lithium-ion batteries, the cell voltage (Vcell) is predicted to be relatively high (> 1.54 V) for C24H12, C12H12Si12, B12H12N12, C27H18Si27, and B27H18N27. The Eads-1 data show only a small variation compared to Eads-2, and therefore, Eads-2 has a strong effect on the changes in Vcell.

Strong Bending Distortion of a Supercoronene Graphene Model upon Adsorption of Lanthanide Atoms

Numerous applications of graphene involve quasi-infinite sheets, as well as finite structures with edges, pores, graphene quantum dots, etc. In theoretical studies of adsorption of diverse chemical species, including single atoms, molecules, cations, and anions, graphene usually behaves as a very rigid planar structure. However, we found that when adsorbing lanthanide atoms, finite size structures, represented by the widely used supercoronene model, can undergo considerable distortion, and the degree of distortion depends on the number of unpaired electrons, reaching a maximum for Gd (eight unpaired electrons). Lanthanides closely approach the supercoronene surface and increase the interaction energy. Extrapolating to real-world systems, one can expect the existence and magnitude of lanthanide-induced distortion to depend on the size of graphene structures. Quasi-infinite or very large graphene sheets are too rigid to undergo such bending, but it becomes tangible for graphene quantum dots and for atom adsorption closer to graphene edges.

Exploring alkali metal cation⋯hydrogen interaction in the formation half sandwich complexes with cycloalkanes: a DFT approach

Gas and solvent phase stability of half sandwich complexes between cycloalkanes viz. cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclopentane, cyclohexane, bicyclo[2.2.2]octane and adamantane with alkali metal cations (Li+, Na+ and K+) are analysed using density functional theory (DFT). M06-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level is primarily used for the study. The studied half sandwich complexes are stable in gas phase (stabilization energy upto 26.55 kcal mol−1). Presence of solvent phase irrespective of its dielectric, imparts negative impact on the stability of the chosen complexes. The formation of the complexes is exothermic in nature. The process of complexation is both enthalpy (ΔH) and free energy (ΔG) driven. Variation in HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) energy also indicates towards the chemical stability of complexes. The interaction is non-covalent with primary contribution from induction component. NBO analysis indicates that C–H bond is the donor and antibonding metal orbital is the acceptor site in the process of complexation. Stability of the complexes depends on the size of the interacting monomers.

DFT study of common anions adsorption at graphene surface due to anion-π interaction

Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we researched the different anions adsorption on the graphene and found that anions can be stably adsorbed on the graphene surface due to the anion-π interaction. The adsorption energy decreased as the order of HPO₄^2- > SO₄^2- > F^- > CH₃COO^- > ClO₃^- > NO₃^- > ClO₄^- > SCN^- > Cl^- > Br^-. The adsorption energy markedly increased as the valence of anion increased from negative monovalence (< -20 kcal/mol) to negative bivalence (> -40 kcal/mol). The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) showed that anion-π interaction is mainly induced by orbital effect. This work provides new insights for understanding Hofmeister effect at graphene interface from the molecular level and indicates that the anion-π interaction cannot be ignored at the interface, especially for the substrate with π-electron-rich carbon-based nanomaterials.

π-Self-Assembly of a Coronene on Carbon Nanomaterial-Modified Electrode and Its Symmetrical Redox and H2O2 Electrocatalytic Reduction Functionalities

The structure-electroactivity relationship of graphene has been studied using coronene (Cor), polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and a subunit of graphene as a model system by chemically modified electrode approach. In general, graphene and PAH do not show any redox activity in their native form. Herein, we report a simple electrochemical approach for the conversion of electro-inactive coronene to a highly redox-active molecule (Cor-Redox; E°' = 0.235 ± 0.005 V vs Ag/AgCl) after being adsorbed on graphitic carbon nanomaterial and preconditioned at an applied potential, 1.2 V vs Ag/AgCl, wherein, the water molecule oxidizes to dioxygen via hydroxyl radical (^•OH) intermediate, in acidic solution (pH 2 KCl-HCl). When the same coronene electrochemical experiment was carried out on an unmodified glassy carbon electrode, there was no sign of faradic signal, revealing the unique electrochemical behavior of the coronene molecule on graphitic nanomaterial. The Cor-Redox peak is found to be highly symmetrical (peak-to-peak potential separation of ∼0 V tested by cyclic voltammetry (CV)) and surface-confined (Γ_Cor-Redox = 10.1 × 10^-9 mol cm^-2) and has proton-coupled electron-transfer (∂E°'/∂pH = -56 mV pH^-1) character. Initially, it was speculated that Cor is converted to a hydroxy group-functionalized Cor molecule (dihydroxy benzene derivative) on the graphitic surface and showed the electrochemical redox activity. However, physicochemical characterization studies including Raman, IR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), redox-site selective oxidation probe, cysteine (for dihydroxy benzene), radical scavenger ((2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl, TEMPO), and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) using ferricyanide redox couple have revealed that coronene cationic radical species like electroactive molecule is formed on graphitic material upon the electrochemical oxidation reaction at a high anodic potential. It has been proposed that ^•OH generated as an intermediate species from the water oxidation reaction is involved in the coronene cationic radical species. Studies on coronene electrochemical reaction at various carbon nanomaterials like multiwalled carbon, single-walled carbon, graphite, graphene oxide, and carbon nanofiber revealed that graphitic structure (without any oxygen functional groups) and its π-π bonding are key factors for the success of the electrochemical reaction. The coronene molecular redox peak showed an unusual electrocatalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide similar to the peroxidase enzyme-biocatalyzed reduction reaction in physiological solution.
