A theoretical screening of the O H⋅⋅⋅π interaction between water and benzene using density-functional approaches: Effects of nonlocal exchange and long-range dispersion corrections in the true minimum

Investigation of the difference in color enhancement effect on cyanidin-3-O-glucoside by phenolic acids and the interaction mechanism

Co-pigmentation effect of phenolic acids on cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) and the mechanisms were investigated. Sinapic acid (SIA), ferulic acid (FA), p-coumaric acid (p-CA) and syringic acid (SYA) significantly enhanced C3G stability (P < 0.05), whereas vanillic acid (VA) and gallic acid (GA) showed no influence (P > 0.05). Among these phenolic acids, SIA and FA had higher binding coefficient with C3G (48.83 and 43.38), reduced degradation rate constant by 40.0 ∼ 50.0 %, prolonged half-life by 74.6 ∼ 94.7 % at 323 K, and significantly inhibited C3G hydration reaction (pK_h = 2.87 and 2.80, P < 0.05). Molecular docking revealed that C3G and co-pigments were connected by hydrogen bond and π-π stacking interaction. Hydroxycinnamic acids of SIA, FA and p-CA bound with ring B and ring C of C3G, while hydroxybenzoic acids of SYA, VA and GA hardly interacted with ring C. Generally, the protection effect of hydroxycinnamic acids on C3G was better than that of hydroxybenzoic acids, exhibiting stronger hyperchromic effect.

Water coordinated on Cu(I)-based catalysts is the oxygen source in CO2 reduction to CO

Catalytic reduction of CO₂ over Cu-based catalysts can produce various carbon-based products such as the critical intermediate CO, yet significant challenges remain in shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Here, we develop a modified triple-stage quadrupole mass spectrometer to monitor the reduction of CO₂ to CO in the gas phase online. Our experimental observations reveal that the coordinated H₂O on Cu(I)-based catalysts promotes CO₂ adsorption and reduction to CO, and the resulting efficiencies are two orders of magnitude higher than those without H₂O. Isotope-labeling studies render compelling evidence that the O atom in produced CO originates from the coordinated H₂O on catalysts, rather than CO₂ itself. Combining experimental observations and computational calculations with density functional theory, we propose a detailed reaction mechanism of CO₂ reduction to CO over Cu(I)-based catalysts with coordinated H₂O. This study offers an effective method to reveal the vital roles of H₂O in promoting metal catalysts to CO₂ reduction.
