Abstract
This paper aimed to investigate the influence of motor practice and music performance experiences on musicians' auditory memory, the effect of auditory distinctiveness on melody recognition, and the differences in the working memory of classical and jazz pianists. The study was conducted among 26 jazz and 24 classical music students at Shenyang Conservatory of Music. To achieve the goal set, a melody recognition ability was analyzed after listening, performing without sound, and simultaneous listening and performing using computer recordings and pianist-taken notes. The study was conducted following repeated measures mixed design. The within-group variable was the learning condition. As the within-participant variable, the number of melody practicing trials was chosen. The type of influence on auditory memory was chosen as a between-group variable. The dependent variables were auditory recognition score, motor imagery ability, and auditory imagery ability. Students' recognition of the heard melodies was assessed by means of a 3-point Likert scale. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to investigate the relationship between working memory and other student characteristics. The study outcomes unveiled that pianists are much better at recognizing tunes they generate themselves in auditory-motor practice than auditory practice alone. It was pointed out that the ability to recognize melody in auditory-motor learning is influenced by its acoustic characteristics. Hence, melodies that are slow in tempo and regular in time and intensity are easier to recognize than more variable pieces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Music evokes strong and persistent emotional responses. However, the mechanisms underlying the emotional effects of music, particularly in older adults, are largely unknown. One purported mechanism by which music evokes emotions is through memory - that is, music evokes personal, autobiographical memories that then lead to emotional responses. METHOD Here, we investigated whether memory-evoking music induces stronger and longer-lasting emotional responses than non-memory-evoking music, and whether these emotional responses differ between younger and older adults. Older (N = 30) and younger adults (N =30) listened to two blocks of self-selected music (one block of memory-evoking music and one block of familiar but non-memory-evoking music). Participants reported their emotions prior to and at three timepoints post-listening. RESULTS Older adults reported higher levels of positive affect than younger adults. For both groups, positive affect increased after listening to both memory-evoking and non-memory-evoking music. However, negative affect only increased after listening to memory-evoking music. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that both memory-evoking and non-memory-evoking music generate strong emotions in younger and older adults, but music that conjures personal memories is more likely to elicit mixed emotions. Our results have important clinical implications when designing music-based interventions for mood and affect, particularly in older adult populations.

Abstract
Previous studies have found that music evokes more vivid and emotional memories of autobiographical events than various other retrieval cues. However, it is possible such findings can be explained by pre-existing differences between disparate events that are retrieved in response to each cue type. To test whether music exhibits differential effects to other cues even when memory encoding is controlled, we compared music and environmental sounds as cues for memories of the same set of dynamic visual scenes. Following incidental encoding of 14 scenes (7 with music, 7 with sounds), the music and sounds were presented to participants (N = 56), who were asked to describe the scenes associated with these cues, and rate various memory properties. Music elicited fewer correct memories and more effortful retrieval than sound cues, and no difference was found in memory detail/vividness between cue types. However, music-evoked memories were rated as more positive and less arousing. These findings provide important critical insights that only partially support the common notion that music differs from other cue types in its effects on episodic memory retrieval.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Music is a multidimensional phenomenon and is classified by its arousal properties, emotional quality, and structural characteristics. Although structural features of music (i.e., pitch, timbre, and tempo) and music emotion recognition in cochlear implant (CI) recipients are popular research topics, music-evoked emotions, and related psychological mechanisms that reflect both the individual and social context of music are largely ignored. Understanding the music-evoked emotions (the "what") and related mechanisms (the "why") can help professionals and CI recipients better comprehend the impact of music on CI recipients' daily lives. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate these aspects in CI recipients and compare their findings to those of normal hearing (NH) controls. DESIGN This study included 50 CI recipients with diverse auditory experiences who were prelingually deafened (deafened at or before 6 years of age)-early implanted (N = 21), prelingually deafened-late implanted (implanted at or after 12 years of age-N = 13), and postlingually deafened (N = 16) as well as 50 age-matched NH controls. All participants completed the same survey, which included 28 emotions and 10 mechanisms (Brainstem reflex, Rhythmic entrainment, Evaluative Conditioning, Contagion, Visual imagery, Episodic memory, Musical expectancy, Aesthetic judgment, Cognitive appraisal, and Lyrics). Data were presented in detail for CI groups and compared between CI groups and between CI and NH groups. RESULTS The principal component analysis showed five emotion factors that are explained by 63.4% of the total variance, including anxiety and anger, happiness and pride, sadness and pain, sympathy and tenderness, and serenity and satisfaction in the CI group. Positive emotions such as happiness, tranquility, love, joy, and trust ranked as most often experienced in all groups, whereas negative and complex emotions such as guilt, fear, anger, and anxiety ranked lowest. The CI group ranked lyrics and rhythmic entrainment highest in the emotion mechanism, and there was a statistically significant group difference in the episodic memory mechanism, in which the prelingually deafened, early implanted group scored the lowest. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that music can evoke similar emotions in CI recipients with diverse auditory experiences as it does in NH individuals. However, prelingually deafened and early implanted individuals lack autobiographical memories associated with music, which affects the feelings evoked by music. In addition, the preference for rhythmic entrainment and lyrics as mechanisms of music-elicited emotions suggests that rehabilitation programs should pay particular attention to these cues.

Abstract
Previous research has found that music brings back more vivid and emotional autobiographical memories than various other retrieval cues. However, such studies have often been low in ecological validity and constrained by relatively limited cue selection and predominantly young adult samples. Here, we compared music to food as cues for autobiographical memories in everyday life in young and older adults. In two separate four-day periods, 39 younger (ages 18-34) and 39 older (ages 60-77) adults recorded their music- and food-evoked autobiographical memories in paper diaries. Across both age groups, music triggered more frequent autobiographical memories, a greater proportion of involuntary memories, and memories rated as more personally important in comparison to food cues. Age differences impacted music- and food-evoked memories similarly, with older adults consistently recalling older and less specific memories, which they rated as more positive, vivid, and rehearsed. However, young and older adults did not differ in the number or involuntary nature of their recorded memories. This work represents an important step in understanding the phenomenology of naturally occurring music-evoked autobiographical memories across adulthood and provides new insights into how and why music may be a more effective trigger for personally valued memories than certain other everyday cues.

Abstract
Familiar music facilitates memory retrieval in adults with dementia. However, mechanisms behind this effect, and its generality, are unclear because of a lack of parallel work in healthy aging. Exposure to familiar music enhances spontaneous recall of memories directly cued by the music, but it is unknown whether such effects extend to deliberate recall more generally - e.g., to memories not directly linked to the music being played. It is also unclear whether familiar music boosts recall of specific episodes versus more generalised semantic memories, or whether effects are driven by domain-general mechanisms (e.g., improved mood). In a registered report study, we examined effects of familiar music on deliberate recall in healthy adults ages 65-80 years (N = 75) by presenting familiar music from earlier in life, unfamiliar music, and non-musical audio clips across three sessions. After each clip, we assessed free recall of remote memories for pre-selected events. Contrary to our hypotheses, we found no effects of music exposure on recall of prompted events, though familiar music evoked spontaneous memories most often. These results suggest that effects of familiar music on recall may be limited to memories specifically evoked in response to the music (Preprint and registered report protocol at https://osf.io/kjnwd/).
