Evaluation of e-mail contact to conduct follow-up among adolescent women participating in a longitudinal cohort study of contraceptive use

Population-Based Survey Methods for Reaching Adolescent and Young Adult Survivors of Pediatric Cancer and Their Parents

PURPOSE

Contacting childhood cancer survivors (CCS) to assess reasons for declining receipt of follow-up care after treatment is difficult and participation in surveys may be low, resulting in biased results. We sought to demonstrate effective recruitment and population-based sampling methods to improve response and minimize bias.

METHODS

Four hundred and seventy CCS diagnosed between 2000 and 2007 at two hospitals in Los Angeles County were selected from the California Cancer Registry and were 15-25 years of age at the time of interview. Surveys of survivors and their parents were completed by multiple methods including mail, online, and telephone. Effectiveness of "plain" versus "designer" formatting of study materials was tested. Variables associated with response were analyzed using univariate and multivariable methods. Effort required for recruitment was quantified.

RESULTS

Fifty percent of survivors (n = 235) and 36.5% of parents (n = 171) responded, and there were 160 parent-child dyads among them. Among located survivors, 61% participated. Response was higher for women, parents of younger survivors, and those from higher socioeconomic status areas. Among Hispanics, no variables were related to response. More effort was required to reach men and older survivors, but efforts beyond 15 calls and 7 remailings were unproductive. Formatting (i.e., plain vs. designer) did not affect response.

CONCLUSION

Efforts to reach survivors must include multiple methods to be successful. Use of an intensive recruitment strategy and population-based sample resulted in a largely representative sample of CCS, especially for Hispanics. Expensive design efforts had little effect on recruitment, suggesting that plainer materials are sufficient. This example may inform similar studies.

Evaluation of two intervention models on contraceptive attitudes and behaviors among nulliparous women in Shanghai, China: a clustered randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

With increasing acceptance of premarital sex among young Chinese women, the rates of unintended pregnancies and induced abortions are becoming alarmingly high, suggesting the needs of educating women with adequate contraceptive knowledge and providing them with accessible contraceptive services. Previous studies have shown that knowledge and attitudes towards contraception could be modified through intervention strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of two community intervention models on modifying contraceptive attitudes and behaviors among nulliparous women.

METHODS

In this clustered randomized controlled trial, nulliparous women aged 18-40 years from 18 communities were enrolled and randomized to either the traditional community intervention model (TC model) or the more comprehensive new community-based intervention model (NC model) with a ratio of 1:2. Contraceptive attitudes and behaviors were assessed before and after the interventions.

RESULTS

A total of 901 nulliparous women were followed. The most common contraceptive method in both groups was condom (approximately 80%) before or after interventions. The rates of using effective contraceptive methods were very low (<5%) even after the intervention. Comparing the NC with TC group, the adjusted ORs and 95% CIs regarding natural family planning, emergency contraceptive usage and short-acting OCPs were1.53 (95% CI: 1.11-2.13), 2.87 (95% CI: 2.05-4.02), and 2.71 (95% CI: 1.65-4.47), respectively; while the ORs and 95%CIs of gynecological examination and contraceptive use were 2.31 (95% CI: 1.63-3.27) and 2.89 (95% CI: 1.98-4.23), respectively. No statistical significant difference was found for the use of effective contraceptive methods at post-intervention among the two models.

CONCLUSIONS

High proportions of nulliparous women held negative attitudes and behaviors towards effective contraceptive methods. The NC model, integrating existing health resources, had more positive influence than the TC model on the favorable contraceptive attitudes and behaviors towards the use of any contraceptive methods, but had limited impact on the use of effective contraceptive methods. Our study suggested the feasibility of applying the NC model in Shanghai. Interventions on contraceptive attitudes and behaviors should base on the existing health service system, synthesize resources and selectively apply to populations with distinct characteristics.

We should really keep in touch: predictors of the ability to maintain contact with contraception clinical trial participants over 12 months

OBJECTIVES

This study assesses the ability to maintain contact with participants enrolled in an emergency contraception (EC) trial with 12 months of follow-up based on the modes of contact they provided at enrollment.

STUDY DESIGN

Data came from a clinical trial offering women the copper intrauterine device or oral levonorgestrel for EC. A modified Poisson regression was used to assess predictors associated with the ability to contact study participants 12 months after enrollment.

RESULTS

Data were available for 542 participants; 443 (82%) could be contacted at 12 months. Contact at 12 months was greatest for those whose preferred the method of contact was text messaging, e-mail or any (62/68; 91% contacted) and worst for the 18 who had a landline phone (only 7 contacted; 39%). After controlling for age, having an e-mail address, text messaging, language preference, type of EC chosen and insurance, preferred contact other than phone increased the likelihood of follow-up by 10% [risk ratio (RR) 1.1 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0-1.2], while having a landline reduced a woman's likelihood of being contacted at 12 months by 50% compared to women with a contract cell (RR 0.5, 95% CI 0.3-1.0).

CONCLUSION

The few women with a landline for contact had poor follow-up at 1 year, while women who preferred e-mail or text had the highest rate of follow-up.

IMPLICATIONS

Understanding how best to reduce loss to follow-up is an essential component of conducting a contraceptive clinical trial. Improved participant retention maximizes internal validity and allows for important clinical outcomes, such as pregnancy, to be assessed.
