Accelerated functional brain aging in major depressive disorder: evidence from a large scale fMRI analysis of Chinese participants. Transl Psychiatry 2022; 12:397. Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common mental health conditions that has been intensively investigated for its association with brain atrophy and mortality. Recent studies suggest that the deviation between the predicted and the chronological age can be a marker of accelerated brain aging to characterize MDD. However, current conclusions are usually drawn based on structural MRI information collected from Caucasian participants. The universality of this biomarker needs to be further validated by subjects with different ethnic/racial backgrounds and by different types of data. Here we make use of the REST-meta-MDD, a large scale resting-state fMRI dataset collected from multiple cohort participants in China. We develop a stacking machine learning model based on 1101 healthy controls, which estimates a subject's chronological age from fMRI with promising accuracy. The trained model is then applied to 1276 MDD patients from 24 sites. We observe that MDD patients exhibit a +4.43 years (p < 0.0001, Cohen's d = 0.31, 95% CI: 2.23-3.88) higher brain-predicted age difference (brain-PAD) compared to controls. In the MDD subgroup, we observe a statistically significant +2.09 years (p < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.134525) brain-PAD in antidepressant users compared to medication-free patients. The statistical relationship observed is further checked by three different machine learning algorithms. The positive brain-PAD observed in participants in China confirms the presence of accelerated brain aging in MDD patients. The utilization of functional brain connectivity for age estimation verifies existing findings from a new dimension.

Abstract
The specific mechanisms by which acupuncture affects the central nervous system are unclear. In the International Standard Scalp Acupuncture system, acupuncture needles are applied at the middle line of the vertex, anterior parietal-temporal oblique line, and the posterior parietal-temporal oblique line. We conducted a single-arm prospective clinical trial in which seven healthy elderly volunteers (three men and four women; 50–70 years old) received International Standard Scalp Acupuncture at MS5 (the mid-sagittal line between Baihui (DU20) and Qianding (DU21)), the left MS6 (line joining Sishencong (EX-HN1) and Xuanli (GB6)), and the left MS7 (line joining DU20 and Qubin (GB7)). After acupuncture, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated changes in the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations and regional homogeneity in various areas, showing remarkable enhancement of regional homogeneity in the bilateral anterior cingulate, left medial frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus. Functional connectivity based on a seed region at the right middle frontal gyrus (42, 51, 9) decreased at the bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus. Our data preliminarily indicates that the international standard scalp acupuncture in healthy elderly participants specifcally enhances the correlation between the brain regions involved in cognition and implementation of the brain network regulation system and the surrounding adjacent brain regions. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the China-Japan Union Hospital at Jilin University, China, on July 18, 2016 (approval No. 2016ks043).

Resting-State Functional Connectivity Between Centromedial Amygdala and Insula as Related to Somatic Symptoms in Depressed Patients: A Preliminary Study. Psychosom Med 2019; 81:434-440. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Somatic symptoms are prevalent in patients with depression. The centromedial amygdala (CMA) is a key brain region that mediates autonomic and somatic responses. Abnormal function in the CMA may contribute to the development of somatic symptoms in depressed patients. METHODS We compared the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) based on the seed of the left and right CMA between 37 patients with depression and 30 healthy controls. The severity of depressive and somatic symptoms was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and the 15-item somatic symptom severity scale of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-15). Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the RSFC and clinical variables (HDRS and PHQ-15) in depressed patients. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, patients with depression exhibited decreased RSFC between the CMA and insula, and superior temporal gyrus. In addition, functional connectivity between the left CMA and left insula was negatively correlated with PHQ-15 (r = -0.348, p = .037) in depressed patients. No significant relation was found between the RSFC and HDRS in depressed patients. CONCLUSIONS Functional connectivity between the CMA and insula is reduced in depressive patients, which is associated with the severity of somatic symptoms. Our findings may provide a potential neural substrate to interpret the co-occurrence of depression with somatic symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Verbal abuse during pregnancy has a greater impact than physical and sexual violence on the incidence of postnatal depression and maternal abuse behavior towards their children. In addition, exposure of children (aged 12 months to adolescence) to verbal abuse from their parents exerts an adverse impact to the children's auditory function. However, the effect of verbal abuse during pregnancy on fetal auditory function has not yet been thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between intimate partner verbal abuse during pregnancy and newborn hearing screening (NHS) referral, which indicates immature or impaired auditory function. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING The Japan Environment and Children's Study is an ongoing nationwide population-based birth-cohort study designed to determine environmental factors during and after pregnancy that affect the development, health, or wellbeing of children. Pregnant women living in 15 areas of Japan were recruited between January 2011 and March 2014. METHODS Multiple imputation for missing data was performed, followed by multiple logistic regression using 16 confounding variables. RESULTS Of 104,102 records in the dataset, 79,985 mother-infant pairs submitted complete data for questions related to verbal and physical abuse and the results of NHS. Of 79,985 pregnant women, 10,786 (13.5%) experienced verbal abuse and 978 (1.2%) experienced physical abuse. Of 79,985 newborns, 787 (0.98%) received a NHS referral. Verbal abuse was significantly associated with NHS referral (adjusted odds ratio: 1.44; 95% confidence interval: 1.05-1.98). CONCLUSIONS Verbal abuse should be avoided during pregnancy to preserve the newborn's auditory function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The thalamus is an integrative hub conveying sensory information between cortical areas and related to cognition. However, alterations of the thalamus following partial hearing deprivation remains unknown. PURPOSE To investigate the modifications of the thalamus and its seven subdivisions in terms of structure, function, and perfusion in subjects with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), as well as their associations with SNHL-induced cognitive impairments. STUDY TYPE Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS Thirty-seven bilateral long-term SNHL patients and 38 well-matched controls. FIELD STRENGTH 3 T/BOLD, T1 -weighted imaging, arterial spin labeling (ASL). ASSESSMENT Quantitative measurements in the thalamus and subdivisions were obtained, including the relative volume, fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) within slow 5 (0.01-0.027 Hz), slow 4 (0.027-0.073 Hz), and combined frequency (0.01-0.073 Hz), as well as the whole-brain functional connectivity. Twenty-five SNHL patients and 20 controls underwent ASL scanning. Then correlation analysis was computed between all significant changes and cognition tests. STATISTICAL TESTS Continuous and categorical variables were compared by independent-sample t-test and chi-square test, respectively. Quantitative MRI measurement comparisons were corrected for multiple comparison, and functional connectivity (FC) analysis used two-sample t-test with false-discovery rate correction. Area under the curve (AUC) in receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was applied to evaluate the power of alterations in differentiating SNHL and controls. RESULTS No significant difference in the relative volume and perfusion of seven thalamus subdivisions were observed, but a decrease in fALFF in SNHL. SNHL showed reduced thalamic connectivity with the cerebellum lobule VIII, ventral anterior cingulate cortex, insula, superior temporal gyrus, media temporal gyrus, medial frontal gyrus, Heschl's gyrus, and temporal pole. And some FC abnormalities exhibited positive correlations with cognitive tests and high discriminative power (0.8 < AUC < 1) in two groups. DATA CONCLUSION SNHL led to decreased thalamic activity and widespread weakened connectivity with other brain areas. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 2 Technical Efficacy Stage: 3 J. Magn. Reson. Abstract
Background Conversion disorder refers to functional bodily impairments that can be precipitated by high stress situations including trauma and surgery. Symptoms of conversion disorder may mimic or complicate otolaryngology diseases in the pediatric population. Case presentation In this report, the authors describe 3 cases of conversion disorder that presented to a pediatric otolaryngology-head and neck surgery practice. This report highlights a unique population of patients who have not previously been investigated. The clinical presentation and management of these cases are discussed in detail. Non-organic otolaryngology symptoms of conversion disorder in the pediatric population are reviewed. In addition, we discuss the challenges faced by clinicians in appropriately identifying and treating these patients and present an approach to management of their care. Conclusion In this report, the authors highlight the importance of considering psychogenic illnesses in patients with atypical clinical presentations of otolaryngology disorders.

Abstract
There have been few reports that investigated the effects of the degree and pattern of a spectral smearing of stimuli due to deteriorated hearing ability on the performance of auditory brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. In this study, we assumed that such spectral smearing of stimuli may affect the performance of an auditory steady-state response (ASSR)-based BCI system and performed subjective experiments using 10 normal-hearing subjects to verify this assumption. We constructed smearing-reflected stimuli using an 8-channel vocoder with moderate and severe hearing loss setups and, using these stimuli, performed subjective concentration tests with three symmetric and six asymmetric smearing patterns while recording electroencephalogram signals. Then, 56 ratio features were calculated from the recorded signals, and the accuracies of the BCI selections were calculated and compared. Experimental results demonstrated that (1) applying smearing-reflected stimuli decreases the performance of an ASSR-based auditory BCI system, and (2) such negative effects can be reduced by adjusting the feature settings of the BCI algorithm on the basis of results acquired a posteriori. These results imply that by fine-tuning the feature settings of the BCI algorithm according to the degree and pattern of hearing ability deterioration of the recipient, the clinical benefits of a BCI system can be improved.

Abstract
We review brain anatomical studies of tinnitus. We evaluate the “gating mechanism” in light of the evidence from these studies. We discuss the results and the possible causes of disparity between findings. Overall, the evidence for structural abnormalities in tinnitus is unconvincing. We identify methodological concerns and suggest strategies for future research.
In this paper, we review studies that have investigated brain morphology in chronic tinnitus in order to better understand the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder. Current consensus is that tinnitus is a disorder involving a distributed network of peripheral and central pathways in the nervous system. However, the precise mechanism remains elusive and it is unclear which structures are involved. Given that brain structure and function are highly related, identification of anatomical differences may shed light upon the mechanism of tinnitus generation and maintenance. We discuss anatomical changes in the auditory cortex, the limbic system, and prefrontal cortex, among others. Specifically, we discuss the gating mechanism of tinnitus and evaluate the evidence in support of the model from studies of brain anatomy. Although individual studies claim significant effects related to tinnitus, outcomes are divergent and even contradictory across studies. Moreover, results are often confounded by the presence of hearing loss. We conclude that, at present, the overall evidence for structural abnormalities specifically related to tinnitus is poor. As this area of research is expanding, we identify some key considerations for research design and propose strategies for future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Identification of gene × environment interactions (G × E) for depression is a crucial step in ascertaining the mechanisms underpinning the disorder. Earlier studies have indicated strong genetic influences and numerous environmental risk factors. In relation to childhood and adolescent depression, evidence is accumulating that the quality of the parental environment is associated with serotonin biology in children. We hypothesized that maternal depression is a crucial environmental risk factor associated with serotonin-regulating genes. METHODS This study was designed to ascertain the G × E interaction for diagnosis of depression in a Japanese pediatric sample. DNA samples from 55 pediatric patients with depression and 58 healthy schoolchildren were genotyped for the 5-HTT (2 short (S) alleles at the 5-HTT locus) promoter serotonin-transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) polymorphism. We examined whether an adverse parental environment, operationalized as the mother's history of recurrent major depressive disorder, interacts with 5-HTTLPR polymorphism to predict patients' depression symptoms. RESULTS Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that maternal depression (adversity), gender, and FSIQ significantly affect the diagnosis of depression among children and adolescents. However, no main effect was found for adversity or genotype. Results of multivariable logistic regression analyses using stepwise procedure have elicited some models with a good fit index, which also suggests no interaction between 5-HTTLPR and adversity on depression. CONCLUSIONS To assess G × E interaction, data obtained from children and adolescents who had been carefully diagnosed categorically and data from age-matched controls were analyzed using logistic regression. Despite an equivocal interaction effect, adversity and gender showed significant main effects.
