Touch anticipation mediates cross-modal Hebbian plasticity in the primary somatosensory cortex

Therapeutic benefits of noninvasive somatosensory cortex stimulation on cortical plasticity and somatosensory function: a systematic review

Optimal limb coordination requires efficient transmission of somatosensory information to the sensorimotor cortex. The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is frequently damaged by stroke, resulting in both somatosensory and motor impairments. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) to the primary motor cortex is thought to induce neural plasticity that facilitates neurorehabilitation. Several studies have also examined if NIBS to the S1 can enhance somatosensory processing as assessed by somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) and improve behavioral task performance, but it remains uncertain if NIBS can reliably modulate S1 plasticity or even whether SEPs can reflect this plasticity. This systematic review revealed that NIBS has relatively minor effects on SEPs or somatosensory task performance, but larger early SEP changes after NIBS can still predict improved performance. Similarly, decreased paired-pulse inhibition in S1 post-NIBS is associated with improved somatosensory performance. However, several studies still debate the role of inhibitory function in somatosensory performance after NIBS in terms of the direction of the change (that, disinhibition or inhibition). Altogether, early SEP and paired-pulse inhibition (particularly inter-stimulus intervals of 30-100 ms) may become useful biomarkers for somatosensory deficits, but improved NIBS protocols are required for therapeutic applications.

Tactile Interaction with a Humanoid Robot: Effects on Physiology and Subjective Impressions

This study investigated how touching and being touched by a humanoid robot affects human physiology, impressions of the interaction, and attitudes towards humanoid robots. 21 healthy adult participants completed a 3 (touch style: touching, being touched, pointing) × 2 (body part: hand vs buttock) within-subject design using a Pepper robot. Skin conductance response (SCR) was measured during each interaction. Perceived impressions of the interaction (i.e., friendliness, comfort, arousal) were measured per questionnaire after each interaction. Participants’ demographics and their attitude towards robots were also considered. We found shorter SCR rise times in the being touched compared to the touching condition, possibly reflecting psychological alertness to the unpredictability of robot-initiated contacts. The hand condition had shorter rise times than the buttock condition. Most participants evaluated the hand condition as most friendly and comfortable and the robot-initiated interactions as most arousing. Interacting with Pepper improved attitudes towards robots. Our findings require future studies with larger samples and improved procedures. They have implications for robot design in all domains involving tactile interactions, such as caring and intimacy.

Paired associative stimulations: Novel tools for interacting with sensory and motor cortical plasticity

In the early 2000s, a novel non-invasive brain stimulation protocol, the paired associative stimulation (PAS), was introduced, allowing to induce and investigate Hebbian associative plasticity within the humans' motor system, with patterns resembling spike-timing-dependent plasticity properties found in cellular models. Since this evidence, PAS efficacy has been proved in healthy, and to a lesser extent, in clinical populations. Recently, novel 'modified' protocols targeting sensorimotor and crossmodal networks appeared in the literature. In the present work, we have reviewed recent advances using these 'modified' PAS protocols targeting sensory and motor cortical networks. To better categorize them, we propose a novel classification according to the nature of the peripheral and cortical stimulations (i.e., within-system, cross-systems, and cortico-cortical PAS). For each protocol of the categories mentioned above, we describe and discuss their main features, how they have been used to study and promote brain plasticity, and their advantages and disadvantages. Overall, current evidence suggests that these novel non-invasive brain stimulation protocols represent very promising tools to study the plastic properties of humans' sensorimotor and crossmodal networks, both in the healthy and in the damaged central nervous system.

Modulating Frontal Networks' Timing-Dependent-Like Plasticity With Paired Associative Stimulation Protocols: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Starting from the early 2000s, paired associative stimulation (PAS) protocols have been used in humans to study brain connectivity in motor and sensory networks by exploiting the intrinsic properties of timing-dependent cortical plasticity. In the last 10 years, PAS have also been developed to investigate the plastic properties of complex cerebral systems, such as the frontal ones, with promising results. In the present work, we review the most recent advances of this technique, focusing on protocols targeting frontal cortices to investigate connectivity and its plastic properties, subtending high-order cognitive functions like memory, decision-making, attentional, or emotional processing. Overall, current evidence reveals that PAS can be effectively used to assess, enhance or depress physiological connectivity within frontal networks in a timing-dependent way, in turn modulating cognitive processing in healthy and pathological conditions.

Proprioceptive afferents differentially contribute to effortful perception of object heaviness and length

When humans handle a tool, such as a tennis racket or hammer, for the first time, they often wield it to determine its inertial properties. The mechanisms that contribute to perception of inertial properties are not fully understood. The present study's goal was to investigate how proprioceptive afferents contribute to effortful perception of heaviness and length of a manually wielded object in the absence of vision. Blindfolded participants manually wielded specially designed objects with different mass, the static moment, and the moment of inertia at different wrist angles and angular kinematics. These manipulations elicited different tonic and rhythmic activity levels in the muscle spindles of the wrist, allowing us to relate differences in muscle activity to perceptual judgments of heaviness and length. Perception of heaviness and length depended on an object's static moment and the moment of inertia, respectively. Manipulations of wrist angle and angular kinematics affected perceived heaviness and length in distinct ways. Ulnar deviation resulted in an object being perceived heavier but shorter. Compared to static holding, wielding the object resulted in it being perceived heavier but wielding did not affect perceived length. These results suggest that proprioceptive afferents differentially contribute to effortful perception of object heaviness and length. Critically, the role of afferent is specific to the mechanical variable used to derive a given object property. These findings open a new possibility of studies on the link between physiology, and different mechanical variables picked up by the perceptual system.
