Abstract
For the transition to renewable energy sources, novel energy storage materials are more important than ever. This review addresses so-called molecular solar thermal (MOST) systems, which appear very promising since they combine light harvesting and energy storing in one-photon one-molecule processes. The focus is on norbornadiene (NBD), a particularly interesting candidate, which is converted to the strained valence isomer quadricyclane (QC) upon irradiation. The stored energy can be released on demand. The energy-releasing cycloreversion from QC to NBD can be initiated by a thermal, catalytic, or electrochemical trigger. The reversibility of the energy storage and release cycles determines the general practicality of a MOST system. In the search for derivatives, which enable large-scale applications, fundamental surface science studies help to assess the feasibility of potential substituted NBD/QC couples. We include investigations under well-defined ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions as well as experiments in liquid phase. Next to the influence of the catalytically active surfaces on the isomerization between the two valence isomers, information on adsorption geometries, thermal stability limits, and reaction pathways of the respective molecules are discussed. Moreover, laboratory-scaled test devices demonstrate the proof of concept in various areas of application.

Abstract
Strong coupling between photonic modes and molecular electronic excitations, creating hybrid light-matter states called polaritons, is an attractive avenue for controlling chemical reactions. Nevertheless, experimental demonstrations of polariton-modified chemical reactions remain sparse. Here, we demonstrate modified photoisomerization kinetics of merocyanine and diarylethene by coupling the reactant's optical transition with photonic microcavity modes. We leverage broadband Fourier-plane optical microscopy to noninvasively and rapidly monitor photoisomerization within microcavities, enabling systematic investigation of chemical kinetics for different cavity-exciton detunings and photoexcitation conditions. We demonstrate three distinct effects of cavity coupling: first, a renormalization of the photonic density of states, akin to a Purcell effect, leads to enhanced absorption and isomerization rates at certain wavelengths, notably red-shifting the onset of photoisomerization. This effect is present under both strong and weak light-matter couplings. Second, kinetic competition between polariton localization into reactive molecular states and cavity losses leads to a suppression of the photoisomerization yield. Finally, our key result is that in reaction mixtures with multiple reactant isomers, exhibiting partially overlapping optical transitions and distinct isomerization pathways, the cavity resonance can be tuned to funnel photoexcitations into specific reactant isomers. Thus, upon decoherence, polaritons localize into a chosen isomer, selectively triggering the latter's photoisomerization despite initially being delocalized across all isomers. This result suggests that careful tuning of the cavity resonance is a promising avenue to steer chemical reactions and enhance product selectivity in reaction mixtures.

Abstract
The stability of merocyanine forms formed under UV irradiation of a solution of a spiropyran salt, in which an organic part acts as a cation and a compact bromide ion as an anion, their photophysical properties, and the formation mechanism are studied in this work using time-dependent density functional theory. Theoretical calculations show that TTC and CTT are the most stable open forms (the difference in stability energies is 10.5 and 12.0 kcal mol-1 relative to the formation energy of spiropyran, respectively). The simulated absorption bands in the UV spectrum of the merocyanine forms are observed both in the UV region at 308-366 nm and in the visible region at 544-757 nm due to n → π* and π → π* type transitions. We found that the isomerisation mechanism of spiropyran into merocyanine forms includes two key stages: the ring opening to form cisoid merocyanine forms (except unstable TCC) through conical intersection and their subsequent isomerisation to form stable transoid isomers. The length of the Cspiro-O bond is 1.97 Å and the C1'-C2'-C3'-C4' angle is 70° in the structure close to conical intersection. The stage that determines the rate of this process is the isomerisation between transoid forms, as in the case of transformation of open merocyanine forms into spiropyran.

Abstract
Increasing the security by the multilevel authentication mechanism was the most significant challenge in recent years for the development of anticounterfeiting inks based on photoluminescent nanomaterials. For this purpose, the greatest strategy is the use of multicomponent organic materials and a combination of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with the intelligent behavior of photochromic compounds like spiropyran. Here, the hydroxyl-functionalized polymer nanoparticles were synthesized by emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in different compositions (0-30 wt % of HEMA). Results illustrated that the size of the nanoparticles changed from 64 to 204 nm, and a morphology evolution from spherical to Janus shape was observed by increasing the concentration of HEMA. Photoluminescent inks with red, green, and blue (RGB) fluorescence emissions were prepared by modification of nanoparticles containing 15 wt % of HEMA with spiropyran, fluorescein, and coumarin, respectively. To develop dual-color and multicolor photoluminescent inks that display static and dynamic emission, RGB latex samples were mixed together in different ratios and printed on cellulosic paper. Results display that the fluorescence emission of developed inks can be photoswitched between different statuses, including white to blue, green to blue, green to red/orange, purple to pink, and white to pink, utilizing the FRET phenomenon, photochromism, and a combination of both phenomena. Samples containing spiropyran displayed dynamic color changes in the emission to red, orange, and pink depending on the composition. Hence, developed dual-color and multicolor photoluminescent inks were used for printing of security tags and also painting of some hand-drawn artworks, which obtained results indicating high printability, maximum fluorescence intensity, high resolution, and fast responsivity upon UV-light irradiations of 254 nm (for static mode) and 365 nm (for dynamic mode). In addition, the multilevel authentication mechanism by a static emission under UV-light irradiation of 254 nm, a dynamic emission under UV-light irradiation of 365 nm, and photochromic color change was observed, resulting in increasing the security of developed inks. Actually, developed multicolor photoluminescent inks are the most efficient candidates for developing a new category of chameleon-like high-security anticounterfeiting inks that have tunable optical properties and complex multilevel authentication mechanisms.

Abstract
Design of spiropyrans showing spontaneous isomerization driven by the polarity of solvents is an important consideration for the synthesis of optical sensory materials. Although some spiropyrans undergo polarity-driven isomerization, they must be heated owing to the high activation energy required for isomerization. In this study, we describe that a spiropyran containing a hydroxynaphthalimide unit (1) exhibits a polarity-driven isomerization at room temperature. It exists as a colorless spirocyclic (SP) form in less polar solvents but is isomerized to a colored merocyanine (MC) form in polar solvents. The equilibrium amount of the MC form increases with an increase in the polarity of solvents. The MC form involves two resonance structures-the quinoidal and zwitterionic forms. In polar media, the zwitterionic form dominates mainly owing to solvation by polar molecules. Solvation stabilizes the negative charge of the zwitterionic form and decreases its ground state energy, thereby enhancing SP → MC isomerization. The SP ⇌ MC isomerization terminates within barely 30 s even at room temperature because the naphthol moiety with high π-electron density lowers the activation energy for the rate-determining rotational step.

Abstract
Photochromism of spiropyrans has attracted much attention due to its potential in many light-controlled system applications. However, several fundamental aspects regarding the structure, energetics, and mechanistic details of the transformations of spiropyrans are still not well understood. Here, we report the study of the photochromism of a 6-hydroxy-spiropyran (HBPS) under conditions of matrix isolation, where monomers of the compound are frozen in a solidified noble gas (krypton, at 15 K). The structure of the matrix-isolated HBPS was first elucidated by infrared (IR) spectroscopy supported by density functional theory computations. Then, the photochromism of HBPS, from the colorless spiropyran to the colored merocyanine, was induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 310 nm. The analysis of the IR spectrum of the photoproduced species revealed the exclusive formation of the most stable merocyanine MC-TTC stereoisomer. Subsequent visible-light (550 nm) irradiation of MC-TTC generated a new colorless allenic isomeric species ALN, where the UV irradiation (310 nm) of ALN was found to convert this species back to MC-TTC. This constitutes an unprecedented bidirectional transformation between a colored merocyanine and a colorless allene species. The newly observed photoswitching reaction (or photochromism) occurs along an intramolecular hydrogen bond existing in both merocyanine and allenic species, thus suggesting that it might be generally feasible in the chemistry of spiropyrans. On the other hand, the usual assumption that, as a general rule, merocyanines photochemically revert to spiropyrans is not supported in this work.

Abstract
The synthesis of spiropyran dyes exhibiting solvent-driven isomerization even in the dark condition is an important subject for the design of optical materials. A conventional synthesis strategy involves the conjugation of indoline moieties with electron-deficient aromatic moieties. Herein, we report that a spiropyran conjugated with a hydroxynaphthalene moiety (1) is a new member exhibiting solvent-driven isomerization, even bearing an electron-donating -OH moiety. The dye exists as a colorless spirocyclic (SP) form in nonpolar media. It, however, shows a blue color in polar media, especially in aqueous media, due to the formation of ring-opened merocyanine (MC) forms, where the isomerization terminates in 10 s even at room temperature. The spontaneous SP → MC isomerization originates from the MC forms stabilized by the highly delocalized π-electrons on the hydroxynaphthalene moiety. The solvation in polar media and the hydrogen bonding interaction with water molecules decrease the ground-state energy of the MC forms, triggering spontaneous isomerization. The dye exhibits two MC absorption bands assigned to the trans-trans-cis (TTC) and cis-trans-cis (CTC) isomers. The absorbance of the CTC band increases more significantly with an increase in the water content, and the increase exhibits a linear relationship with a hydrogen-bond donor acidity of solvents. The phenolate oxygen of the CTC form has larger hydrogen-bond acceptor basicity, resulting in stronger stabilization by the water molecule.

Abstract
UV-visible transient absorption spectroscopy and quantum mechanical simulations are combined to elucidate the photochemical mechanism of two metastable merocyanine/spiropyran photoacids, 2-[(E)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]-3,3-dimethyl-1-(3-sulfopropyl)-3H-indol-1-ium (phenylhydroxy-MCH) and 2-[(E)-2-(1H-indazol-7-yl)ethenyl]-3-(3-sulfopropyl)-1,3-benzothiazol-3-ium (indazole-MCH). Transient absorption spectra demonstrate that trans-acid isomerization to the cis form results in deprotonation on a picosecond time scale. Ring closure to form spiropyran follows promptly from the appropriate conformation or follows at longer time delays (≫3.5 ns) following a barrier crossing for single-bond isomerization to the appropriate conformation. Consistent with the results of Berton et al. [ Chem. Sci. 2020, 11, 8457-8468] , we find that cis-phenylhydroxy-MCH is a stronger acid than trans-phenylhydroxy-MCH. The decrease in pKa upon isomerization is further investigated to benchmark quantum chemical methods for their accuracy. Calculations were performed with nine levels of theory including continuum solvent models and explicit water. The calculations are not sufficient to describe the ΔpKa following isomerization of these photoacids, and more work is necessary to properly evaluate the physical basis for the acidity of the cis photoacids.

Abstract
Herein, we present the light-induced synthesis and characterization of a La3+/spiropyran derivative complex (LaMC) and its application as a catalyst when incorporated into electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers. In addition to experimental methods, computational calculations were also essential to better understand the structure and electronic characteristics of LaMC. The LaMC complex was identified as a 10-coordinated structure with the La3+ ion coordinated by four oxygens from the phenolate and the carbonyl of the carboxyl acid group from both MC ligands and by six oxygens from three nitrate ligands. In addition, LaMC was capable of getting reversibly isomerized by UV or visible light cycling. All PCL fibers were successively obtained, and their morphologies, surface properties, and catalytic behavior were studied. Results showed that PCL/LaMC fibers were capable of catalyzing bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate degradation efficiently. Complete hydrolysis was accomplished in only 1.5 days relative to the half-life time of 35 days for the uncatalyzed hydrolysis at pH 8.1 and 25 °C.

Abstract
Direct access to the protonated merocyanine forms of two substituted spiropyrans by mechanosynthesis or sonochemistry was explored. The compounds were formed by the condensation reaction of the methyleneindolium iodide salt with salicylaldehyde derivatives. X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, ab initio geometry optimization, and absorption spectroscopy were combined to provide a better understanding of the four-state molecular switch system in which the newly synthesized protonated merocyanines were found to play a central role. The results of this study suggest that the stability of the protonated merocyanines requires acidic conditions, as treatment with base led to the corresponding unprotonated merocyanines, which in turn spontaneously converted into photochromic closed spiropyrans.

Abstract
The photophysical and isomerization properties of hybrid molecular compounds that consist of photochromic nitro-substituted and halogenated spiropyran derivatives bonded to the surface of the [60]fullerene cage through the pyrrolidine bridge were investigated using various functionals and basis sets of TD-DFT and semiempirical quantum-chemical approaches. The role of nπ* states formed by the lone pairs of substituents in changing of the electronic structure and photochromic properties of spiropyran derivatives was evaluated. The Sππ(spiropyran) → intermediate nπ* states → Sππ(merocyanine) channel for phototransformation of the hybrid compound containing a nitro-substituted spiropyran moiety was established and compared with similar systems of halogenated spiropyrans attached to the [60]fullerene bulk where photoinduced isomerization does not process due to high probability of internal conversion from the excited electronic state localized on the spiropyran fragment to the states of the pyrrolidino[60]fullerene.

Abstract
Spiropyrans are prototype molecular switches, which undergo a reversible photoinduced ring-opening/-closure reaction between the closed three-dimensional spiropyran (SP) and the open, planar merocyanine (MC) form. In solution the SP isomer is the thermodynamically stable form. Using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, we resolve a thermally-activated irreversible ring-opening reaction of nitrospiropyran resulting in the MC form for coverages above one monolayer. Thus, the situation found in solution is reversed for the adsorbed molecules, since the MC form is more stable due to the modified energetics by the presence of the substrate. In addition, illumination with blue light (445 nm) induced also the ring-opening, while the photostimulated back-reaction could not be observed. The photoisomerization is driven by a substrate-mediated process, i.e. a charge transfer from the substrate into molecular states. The situation changes completely in the monolayer regime. Neither a thermally-assisted nor a photoinduced ring-opening reaction has been identified. We ascribe the suppression to sterical effects stabilizing the SP form due to the surface structure of Bi(1 1 4), which consists of straight atomic rows separated by rough valleys.

Abstract
We synthesized a coumarin-spiropyran dyad with a hydrogenated pyran moiety (2), behaving as an off-on type fluorescent receptor for rapid, selective, and sensitive detection of cyanide anion (CN(-)) in aqueous media. The receptor itself shows almost no fluorescence with a quantum yield < 0.01, due to the delocalization of π-electrons over the molecule. Selective nucleophilic addition of CN(-) to the spirocarbon of the molecule rapidly promotes spirocycle opening within only 3 min. This leads to localization of π-electrons on the coumarin moiety and exhibits strong light-blue fluorescence at 459 nm with very high quantum yield (0.52). As a result of this, the receptor facilitates rapid, selective, and sensitive fluorometric detection of CN(-) as low as 1.0 μM.

Abstract
Upon ultraviolet excitation, photochromic spiropyran compounds can be converted by a ring-opening reaction into merocyanine molecules, which in turn can form several isomers differing by cis and trans configurations in the methine bridge. Whereas the spiropyran-merocyanine conversion reaction of the nitro-substituted indolinobenzopyran 6-nitro-1',3',3'-trimethylspiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] (6-nitro BIPS) has been studied extensively in theory and experiments, little is known about photoisomerization among the merocyanine isomers. In this article, we employ femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with variable excitation wavelengths to investigate the excited-state dynamics of the merocyanine in acetonitrile at room temperature, where exclusively the trans-trans-cis (TTC) and trans-trans-trans (TTT) isomers contribute. No photochemical ring-closure pathways exist for the two isomers. Instead, we found that (18±4)% of excited TTC isomers undergo an ultrafast excited-state cis→trans photoisomerization to TTT within 200 fs, while the excited-state lifetime of TTC molecules that do not isomerize is 35 ps. No photoisomerization was detected for the TTT isomer, which relaxes to the ground state with a lifetime of roughly 160 ps. Moreover, signal oscillations at 170 cm(-1) and 360 cm(-1) were observed, which can be ascribed to excited-state wave-packet dynamics occurring in the course of the TTC→TTT isomerization. The results of high-level time-dependent density functional theory in conjunction with polarizable continuum models are presented in the subsequent article [C. Walter, S. Ruetzel, M. Diekmann, P. Nuernberger, T. Brixner, and B. Engels, J. Chem. Phys. 140, 224311 (2014)].

Abstract
Design of optical molecular probes for selective detection of aromatic thiols has attracted much attention. Although several types of probes have been proposed, all of them exhibit colorimetric or fluorometric response via irreversible reaction with aromatic thiols and cannot be reused. Here we report that a spiropyran dye is the first example of a reusable chemosensor for aromatic thiols. A colorless spiropyran dye () dissolved in aqueous media containing aromatic thiols is selectively isomerized to the colored merocyanine form in the dark. In contrast, visible light irradiation of the merocyanine form promotes successful reversion to the colorless spirocyclic form. Kinetic absorption analysis and ab initio calculations of the transition states revealed that this colorimetric response in the dark is ascribed to the decrease in activation energy for isomerization via the nucleophilic interaction between the aromatic thiol and the olefinic carbon of the dye.

Abstract
A polarizable continnum model study and explicit solvation in water investigated through GPU-accelerated ab initio molecular dynamics followed by quantum-chemical calculations have been applied to the process of spiropyran to merocyanine isomerization of two spiropyran derivatives. It has been found that interaction with only one or two water molecules is sufficient to stabilize the merocyanine with respect to the spiropyran form. It has been shown that the agreement between energies obtained in implicit and explicit solvent models depends on the structure of the system and possible specific interactions (hydrogen bonds). Both solvent models predict similar effects in absorption spectra.

Abstract
Using light to control the switching of functional properties of surface-bound species is an attractive strategy for the development of new technologies with possible applications in molecular electronics and functional surfaces and interfaces. Molecular switches are promising systems for such a route, since they possess the ability to undergo reversible changes between different molecular states and accordingly molecular properties by excitation with light or other external stimuli. In this review, recent experiments on photo- and thermally induced molecular switching processes at noble metal surfaces utilizing two-photon photoemission and surface vibrational spectroscopies are reported. The investigated molecular switches can either undergo a trans-cis isomerization or a ring opening-closure reaction. Two approaches concerning the connection of the switches to the surface are applied: physisorbed switches, i.e. molecules in direct contact with the substrate, and surface-decoupled switches incorporated in self-assembled monolayers. Elementary processes in molecular switches at surfaces, such as excitation mechanisms in photoisomerization and kinetic parameters for thermally driven reactions, which are essential for a microscopic understanding of molecular switching at surfaces, are presented. This in turn is needed for designing an appropriate adsorbate-substrate system with the desired switchable functionality controlled by external stimuli.

Abstract
Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy is employed to investigate the reversible, photoinduced spiro→merocyanine isomerization of a self-assembled monolayer, the result of attachment of nitrospiropyran to a gold surface using a dithiolane anchoring group. The attachment of these molecular "alligator clips" to spiropyran molecules provide an easily accessible method to self-assemble a robust monolayer of spiropyran on a gold surface, which allows photoswitching of the spiropyran units. Probing the symmetric and antisymmetric stretching modes of the nitro group allows the determination of the structural orientation of the charged moiety with respect to the surface normal as well as the isomerization rates under photoinduced switching conditions. The photoisomerization of the spiropyran SAM on the gold surface is much faster than the rates of switching spiropyrans in a solid crystalline form, and the rate of thermal relaxation of the opened to closed form in this study is found to be on the same time scale as the relaxation of spiropyran when present in solutions with polar solvents.

Abstract
Spiropyran is a prototype molecular switch which undergoes a reversible ring-opening reaction by photoinduced cleavage of a C-O bond in the spiropyran (SP) to the merocyanine (MC) isomer. While the electronic states and switching behavior are well characterized in solution, adsorption on metal surfaces crucially affects these properties. Using two-photon photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we resolve the molecular energy levels on a Au(111) surface of both isomeric forms. Illumination at various wavelengths does not yield any observable switching rate, thus evidencing a very small upper limit of the quantum efficiency. Electron-induced switching from the SP to the MC isomer via generation of a negative ion resonance can be detected with a quantum yield of (2.2 ± 0.2) × 10(-10) events/electron in tunneling spectroscopy. In contrast, the back reaction could not be observed. This study reveals that the switching properties of surface-bound molecular switches can be very different compared with free molecules, reflecting the strong influence of the interaction with the metal substrate.

Abstract
The effect of inclusion complex formation on the photochromic behavior of a spirobenzopyran dye and its merocyanine isomer was studied in aqueous solution using cucurbit[8]uril (CB8) as a host. The merocyanine (MC) and protonated merocyanine (MCH(+)) were the most stable forms both in water and inside the cavity of CB8. The equilibrium constant of 1:1 complexation with CB8 was found to be 1.7 × 10(5) and 2.0 × 10(6) M(-1) for the former and latter species, respectively. The encapsulation led to significant change in the rate of the photoinduced and thermal photochromic transformations and hindered the hydrolysis of MC. The effect of CB8 on the reaction kinetics strongly altered with pH. The transition from the spiropyran form to trans-MC in a thermal reaction had 33 kJ mol(-1) lower activation energy and more than 5 orders of magnitude smaller Arrhenius pre-exponential factor in CB8 than in water.

Abstract
We have studied the structures and absorption spectra of merocyanine, the photoresponsive isomer of the spiropyran (SP)-merocyanine (MC) pair, in chloroform and in water solvents using a combined hybrid QM/MM Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CP-QM/MM) and ZINDO approach. We report remarkable differences in the molecular structure and charge distribution of MC between the two solvents; the molecular structure of MC remains in neutral form in chloroform while it becomes charge-separated, zwitterionic, in water. The dipole moment of MC in water is about 50% larger than in chloroform, while the value for SP in water is in between, suggesting that the solvent is more influential than the conformation itself in deciding the dipole moment for the merocyanine-spiropyran pair. The calculations could reproduce the experimentally reported blue shift in the absorption spectra of MC when going from the nonpolar to the polar solvent, though the actual value of the absorption maximum is overestimated in chloroform solvent. We find that the CP-QM/MM approach is appropriate for structure modeling of solvatochromic and thermochromic molecules as this approach is able to capture the solvent and thermal-induced structural changes within the solute important for an accurate assessment of the properties.
