Molecular reorientation in assembled CO structures and contrast inversion in STM

Binding Behavior of Carbonmonoxide to Gold Atoms on Ag(001)

The adsorption behavior of single CO molecules at 4 K bound to Au adatoms on a Ag(001) metal surface is studied with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). In contrast to earlier observations two different binding configurations are observed—one on top of a Au adatom and the other one adsorbed laterally to Au on Ag(001). Moreover, IETS reveals different low-energy vibrational energies for the two binding sites as compared to the one for a single CO molecule bound to Ag(001). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the adsorption energies, the diffusion barriers, and the vibrational frequencies of the CO molecule on the different binding sites rationalize the experimental findings.

Understanding the Enhancement of Surface Diffusivity by Dimerization

Beyond dilute coverage, the collective diffusion of molecules might enhance material transport. We reveal an enhanced mobility of molecular dimers by separating two motions, diffusion and rotation, of CO dimers on elemental Ag(100) as well as on a dilute Cu alloy of Ag(100). From time-lapsed scanning tunneling microscopy movies recorded between 15 and 25 K, we determine the activation energy of dimer diffusion on elemental Ag(100) to be, at (40±2)  meV, considerably smaller than the one for monomer diffusion, at (72±1)  meV. The alloyed Cu atoms reduce the dimer mobility facilitating to determine their rotational barrier separately to be (39±3)  meV. Disentangling different degrees of freedom suggests that a rotational motion is at the origin of enhanced dimer diffusivity.

Computational insight into the origin of unexpected contrast in chiral markers as revealed by STM

Internal substituents can serve the double purpose of generating stereogenic centers and (potentially) being identifiable with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) in 2D self-assembled molecular layers. We investigate computationally the origin of stark contrast variations in STM images of chirally substituted self-assembled organic films. STM images of alkyl derivatives with secondary -CH₃ and -OH groups have been simulated. Density functional theory calculations reveal bias-dependent contrast reversals in the substituent regions: a lack of local density of states in the relevant energy regime results in 'dark spots' in the simulated STM images, which turn bright upon increasing the bias voltage.

STM contrast of a CO dimer on a Cu(1 1 1) surface: a wave-function analysis

We present a method used to intuitively interpret the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) contrast by investigating individual wave functions originating from the substrate and tip side. We use localized basis orbital density functional theory, and propagate the wave functions into the vacuum region at a real-space grid, including averaging over the lateral reciprocal space. Optimization by means of the method of Lagrange multipliers is implemented to perform a unitary transformation of the wave functions in the middle of the vacuum region. The method enables (i) reduction of the number of contributing tip-substrate wave function combinations used in the corresponding transmission matrix, and (ii) to bundle up wave functions with similar symmetry in the lateral plane, so that (iii) an intuitive understanding of the STM contrast can be achieved. The theory is applied to a CO dimer adsorbed on a Cu(1 1 1) surface scanned by a single-atom Cu tip, whose STM image is discussed in detail by the outlined method.

Diffusion and dimer formation of CO molecules induced by femtosecond laser pulses

We investigate two fundamental steps of a nonadiabatic surface process, the photo-induced movement and approach of CO molecules on the Cu(111) surface, at a hitherto unachieved single-molecule level through scanning tunneling microscope imaging. For the close approach of two CO molecules, we not only determine the nonadiabatic diffusion barrier (87 meV), but also discover a femto-second-laser-induced transient attraction (30 meV) of the usually repelling CO molecules.

Submolecular imaging of chloronitrobenzene isomers on Cu(111)

We compare computer simulations to experimental scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of chloronitrobenzene molecules on a Cu(111) surface. The experiments show that adsorption induced isomerization of the molecules takes place on the surface. Furthermore, not only the submolecular features can be seen in the STM images, but different isomers can also be recognized. The Todorov-Pendry approach to tunneling produces simulated STM images which are in good accordance with the experiments. Alongside with STM simulations in a tight-binding basis, ab initio calculations are performed in order to analyze the symmetry of relevant molecular orbitals and to consider the nature of tunneling channels. Our calculations show that while the orbitals delocalized to the phenyl ring create a relatively transparent tunneling channel, they also almost isolate the orbitals of the substitute groups at energies which are relevant in STM experiments. These features of the electronic structure are the key ingredients of the accurate submolecular observations.
