Theoretical confirmation of the experimental Raman spectra of the lower-order diamondoid molecule: cyclohexamantane (C26H30)

Bond order effects on the optoelectronic properties of oxygen/sulfur functionalized adamantanes

The objective of this work, is to study adamantanes and to tune their bandgap, since pure adamantane is considered as an insulator due to its high bandgap energy. For this, we doped adamantane with oxygen and sulfur atoms, thus obtaining 730 different structures with double bonds and 730 different structures with single bonds, for a total of 1460 structures, and compared their properties. Among all, 31 molecules were selected that best represented the reduced bandgap behavior. The calculations with greater precision in its results were made using the Local Density Approximation (LDA), in the Density-Functional Theory (DFT) formalism, with PWC functional and TNP basis set. The electronic and optical properties were analyzed, by calculating the energy gap and absorption spectrum. Importantly, we observed that molecules doped with sulfur atoms (double bonds) had their energy gap reduced significantly compared to molecules doped with sulfur and/or oxygen atom with single bonds and pristine adamantane. It was found that in the absorption spectrum, the sulfur-doped structures had their spectrum shifted to the visible region, a fact that becomes relevant for potential dyes and optoelectronic applications. From the seven selected functionalized adamantanes (ADD-04, ADD-05, ADD-07, ADD-19, ADD-20, ADD-41, and ADD-48), any of these could be used as a dye. However, the ADD-20 molecule in particular, which presented optical absorption near (RGB) primary colors, could indicate a potential quantum dot material for application in developing screens of various electronic devices.

Theoretical studies of the vibrational properties of octahedrane (C12H12): A polyhedral caged hydrocarbon molecule

The vibrational properties of octahedrane (C₁₂H₁₂) are calculated using density-functional theory employing two different computational methods: an all-electron Gaussian orbital approach and a Naval Research Laboratory-tight-binding scheme (NRL-TB) coupled with molecular dynamics (NRL-TBMD). Both approaches yield vibrational densities of states for octahedrane that are in good general agreement with each other. NRL Molecular Orbital Library can also provide accurate infrared and Raman spectra which can be analyzed and compared with experimental results, while NRL-TBMD can be conveniently scaled up for larger finite-temperature simulations. This latter approach is used in our paper to produce a theoretical prediction for a stable room temperature structure of octahedrane.

Optical excitation energies, Stokes shift, and spin-splitting of C24H72Si14

As an initial step toward the synthesis and characterization of sila-diamondoids, such as sila-adamantane (Si(10)H(16),T(d)), the synthesis of a fourfold silylated sila-adamantane molecule (C(24)H(72)Si(14),T(d)) has been reported in literature [Fischer et al., Science 310, 825 (2005)]. We present the electronic structure, ionization energies, quasiparticle gap, and the excitation energies for the Si(14)(CH(3))(24) and the exact silicon analog of adamantane Si(10)H(16) obtained at the all-electron level using the delta-self-consistent-field and transitional state methods within two different density functional models: (i) Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation and (ii) fully analytic density functional (ADFT) implementation with atom dependent potential. The ADFT is designed so that molecules separate into atoms having exact atomic energies. The calculations within the two models agree well, to within 0.25 eV for optical excitations. The effect of structural relaxation in the presence of electron-hole-pair excitations is examined to obtain its contribution to the luminescence Stokes shift. The spin-influence on exciton energies is also determined. Our calculations indicate overall decrease in the absorption, emission, quasiparticle, and highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps, ionization energies, Stokes shift, and exciton binding energy when passivating hydrogens in the Si(10)H(16) are replaced with electron donating groups such as methyl (Me) and trimehylsilyl (-Si(Me)(3)).

Spatially resolved electronic and vibronic properties of single diamondoid molecules

Diamondoids are a unique form of carbon nanostructure best described as hydrogen-terminated diamond molecules. Their diamond-cage structures and tetrahedral sp3 hybrid bonding create new possibilities for tuning electronic bandgaps, optical properties, thermal transport and mechanical strength at the nanoscale. The recently discovered higher diamondoids have thus generated much excitement in regards to their potential versatility as nanoscale devices. Despite this excitement, however, very little is known about the properties of isolated diamondoids on metal surfaces, a very relevant system for molecular electronics. For example, it is unclear how the microscopic characteristics of molecular orbitals and local electron-vibrational coupling affect electron conduction, emission and energy transfer in the diamondoids. Here, we report the first single-molecule study of tetramantane diamondoids on Au(111) using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy. We find that the diamondoid electronic structure and electron-vibrational coupling exhibit unique and unexpected spatial correlations characterized by pronounced nodal structure across the molecular surfaces. Ab initio pseudopotential density functional calculations reveal that much of the observed electronic and vibronic properties of diamondoids are determined by surface hydrogen terminations, a feature having important implications for designing future diamondoid-based molecular devices.

Raman spectroscopy of diamondoids

A selection of diamondoid hydrocarbons, from adamantane to [121321] heptamantane, have been analysed by multi-wavelength laser Raman spectroscopy. Spectra were assigned using vibrational frequencies and Raman intensities were calculated by employing the B3LYP functional and the split valence basis set of Schafer, Horn and Ahlrichs with polarisation functions on carbon atoms. The variation of the spectra and associated vibrational modes with the structure and symmetry of the molecules are discussed. Each diamondoid was found to produce a unique Raman spectrum, allowing for easy differentiation between molecules. Using the peak assignments derived from the calculations we find that the low frequency region of the spectra, corresponding to CCC-bending/CC-stretching modes, is particularly characteristic of the geometric shape of the diamondoid molecules.
