Temperature programmed desorption and infrared spectroscopic studies of thin water films on MgO(100)

Photoinitiated Dynamics in Amorphous Solid Water via Nanoimprint Lithography

Laser pulses that act on fragile samples often alter them irreversibly, motivating single-pulse data collection. Amorphous solid water (ASW) is a good example. In addition, neither well-defined paths for molecules to travel through ASW nor sufficiently small samples to enable molecular dynamics modeling have been achieved. Combining nanoimprint lithography and photoinitiation overcomes these obstacles. An array of gold nanoparticles absorbs pulsed (10 ns) 532 nm radiation and converts it to heat, and doped ASW films grown at about 100 K are ejected from atop the irradiated nanoparticles into vacuum. The nanoparticles are spaced from one another by sufficient distance that each acts independently. Thus, a temporal profile of ejected material is the sum of about 10⁶ "nanoexperiments," yielding high single-pulse signal-to-noise ratios. The size of a single nanoparticle and its immediate surroundings is sufficiently small to enable modeling and simulation at the atomistic (molecular) level, which has not been feasible previously. An application to a chemical system is presented in which H/D scrambling is used to infer the presence of protons in films composed of D₂O and H₂O (each containing a small amount of HDO contaminant) upon which a small amount of NO₂ has been deposited. The pulsed laser heating of the nanoparticles promotes NO₂/N₂O₄ hydrolysis to nitric acid, whose protons enhance H/D scrambling dramatically.

Infrared Characterization of Hydroxyl Groups on MgO: A Periodic and Cluster Density Functional Theory Study

The infrared OH stretching frequencies of the various types of hydroxyl groups on MgO surfaces have been calculated by periodic (VASP) and cluster (Gaussian) DFT simulations. Surface irregularities (mono and diatomic steps, corners, step divacancies, and kinks) have been considered to model the IR spectra of hydroxylated MgO powders. A good correspondence between calculated and experimental frequencies is obtained with the B3LYP functional. Hydrogen-bonding is the parameter which influences most the IR frequency of OH groups, followed by location of OH groups in concave or convex areas of the surface and then oxygen coordination. The evolution of experimental IR spectra upon evacuation at increasing temperature can be rationalized on the basis of calculated thermal stabilities of each kind of OH groups. A new model is finally proposed to help assign the experimental bands, in terms of hydrogen-bonding, local topology of the hydroxylated sites, and coordination of oxygen.

Solvation dynamics in Ni+ (H2O)n clusters probed with infrared spectroscopy

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy is reported for mass-selected Ni+ (H2O)n complexes in the O-H stretching region up to cluster sizes of n = 25. These clusters fragment by the loss of one or more intact water molecules, and their excitation spectra show distinct bands in the region of the symmetric and asymmetric stretches of water. The first evidence for hydrogen bonding, indicated by a broad band strongly red-shifted from the free OH region, appears at the cluster size of n = 4. At larger cluster sizes, additional red-shifted structure evolves over a broader wavelength range in the hydrogen-bonding region. In the free OH region, the symmetric stretch gradually diminishes in intensity, while the asymmetric stretch develops into a closely spaced doublet near 3700 cm(-1). The data indicate that essentially all of the water molecules are in a hydrogen-bonded network by the size of n = 10. However, there is no evidence for the formation of clathrate structures seen recently via IR spectroscopy of protonated water clusters.

Amorphous Solid Water Films: Transport and Guest−Host Interactions with CO2 and N2O Dopants

Guest-host interactions have been examined experimentally for amorphous solid water (ASW) films doped with CO2 or N2O. The main diagnostics are Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). ASW films deposited at 90 K are exposed to a dopant, and the first molecules that attach to a film enter its bulk until it is saturated with them. Subsequent dopant adsorption results in crystal growth atop the ASW film. There are distinct spectral signatures for these two cases: LO and TO vibrational modes for the crystal overlayer, and an easily distinguished peak for dopant molecules that reside within the ASW film. Above 105 K, the dopant surface layer desorbs fully. Some dopants residing within the ASW film remain until 155 K, at which point the ASW-to-crystalline-ice transition occurs, expelling essentially all of the dopant. No substantial differences are observed for CO2 versus N2O. It is shown that annealing an ASW film to 130 K lowers the film's capacity to include dopants by a factor of approximately 3, despite the fact that the ASW spectral feature centered at approximately 3250 cm(-1) shows no discernible change. Sandwiches were prepared: ASW-dopant-ASW etc., with the dopant layer displaying crystallinity. Raising these samples past 105 K resulted in the expulsion of essentially all of the crystalline dopant. What remained displayed the same spectral signature as the molecules that entered the bulk following adsorption at the surface. It is concluded that the adsorption sites, though prepared differently, have a lot in common. Dangling OH bonds were observed. When they interacted with a dopant, they underwent a red shift of approximately 50 cm(-1). This is in qualitative agreement with studies that have been carried out with weakly bound binary complexes. As a result of this study, a fairly complete, albeit qualitative, picture is in place for the adsorption, binding, and transport of CO2 and N2O in ASW films.
