Abstract
Currently, the explicitly correlated coupled cluster method is used routinely to generate the multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces (mD-PESs) of van der Waals complexes of small molecular systems relevant for atmospheric, astrophysical and industrial applications. Although very accurate, this method is computationally prohibitive for medium and large molecules containing clusters. For instance, the recent detections of complex organic molecules (COMs) in the interstellar medium, such as benzonitrile, revealed the need to establish an accurate enough electronic structure approach to map the mD-PESs of these species interacting with the surrounding gases. As a benchmark, we have treated the case of the polar molecule benzonitrile interacting with helium, where we use post-Hartree-Fock and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) techniques. Accordingly, we show that MP2 and distinguishable-cluster approximation (DCSD) cannot be used for this purpose, whereas accurate enough PESs may be obtained using the corresponding explicitly correlated versions (MP2-F12 or DCSD-F12) with a reduction in computational costs. Alternatively, computations revealed that SAPT(DFT) is as performant as CCSD(T)-F12/aug-cc-pVTZ, making it the method of choice for mapping the mD-PESs of COMs containing clusters. Therefore, we have used this approach to generate the 3D-PES of the benzonitrile-He complex along the intermonomer Jacobi coordinates. As an application, we have incorporated the analytic form of this PES into quantum dynamical computations to determine the cross sections of the rotational (de-)excitation of benzonitrile colliding with helium at a collision energy of 10 cm-1.

Abstract
This Perspective reviews recent efforts toward selfconsistent calculations of ground-state energies within the random phase approximation (RPA) in the (generalized) Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory context. Since the RPA correlation energy explicitly depends on the non-interacting KS potential, an additional condition to determine the energy as a functional of the density is necessary. This observation leads to the concept of functional selfconsistency (FSC), which requires that the KS density equals the interacting density defined as the functional derivative of the ground-state energy with respect to the external potential. While all existing selfconsistent RPA schemes violate FSC, the recent generalized KS semicanonical projected RPA (GKS-spRPA) method takes a step toward satisfying it. This leads to systematic improvements in densities, binding energy curves, reference state stability, and molecular properties compared to non-selfconsistent RPA as well as optimized effective potential RPA. GKS-spRPA orbital energies accurately approximate valence and core ionization potentials, and even electron affinities of non-valence bound anions. The computational cost and performance of GKS-spRPA are compared to those of related selfconsistent schemes, including GW and orbital optimization methods, and limitations are discussed. Large differences between KS and interacting densities observed in the absence of FSC and the well-rounded performance of GKS-spRPA suggest that the KS potential as a density functional should be defined via the FSC condition for explicitly potential-dependent density functionals.

Abstract
The attraction density functional theory (DFT) has for electronic structure theory is that it is easier to do computationally than ab initio, correlated wavefunction methods, due to its effective one-particle structure. On the contrary, ab initio theorists insist on the ability to converge to the right answer in appropriate limits, but this requires a treatment of the reduced two-particle density matrix. DFT avoids that by appealing to an "existence" theorem (not a constructive one) that all its effects are subsummed into a DFT functional of the one-particle density. However, the existence of thousands of DFT functionals emphasizes that there is no satisfactory way to systematically improve the Kohn-Sham (KS) version as most changes in parameterization or formulation seldom lead to a new functional that is genuinely better than others. Some researchers in the DFT community try to address this issue by imposing conditions rigorously derived from exact DFT considerations, but to date, no one has shown how this route will ever lead to converged results even for the ground state, much less for all the other electronic states obtained from time-dependent DFT that are critically important for chemistry. On the contrary, coupled-cluster (CC) theory and its equation-of-motion extensions provide rigorous results for both that KS-DFT methods are attempting to emulate. How to use them and their exact formal properties to tie CC theory to an effective one-particle form is the target of this perspective. This route addresses the devil's triangle of KS-DFT problems: the one-particle spectrum, self-interaction, and the integer discontinuity.

Abstract
Modelling dispersion interactions with traditional density functional theory (DFT) is a challenge that has been extensively addressed in the past decade. The exchange-dipole moment (XDM), among others, is a non-empirical add-on dispersion correction model in DFT. The functional PW86+PBE+XDM for exchange, correlation and dispersion, respectively, compromises an accurate functional for thermochemistry and for van der Waals (vdW) complexes at equilibrium and non-equilibrium geometries. To use this functional in optimizing vdW complexes, rather than computing single point energies, it is necessary to evaluate accurate forces. The purpose of this paper is to validate that, along the potential energy surface, the distance at which the energy is minimum is commensurate with the distance at which the forces vanish to zero. This test was validated for 10 rare gas diatomic molecules using various integration grids and different convergence criteria. It was found that the use of either convergence criterion, 10-6 or 10-8, in Gaussian09, does not affect the accuracy of computed optimal distances and binding energies. An ultra-fine grid needs to be used when computing accurate energies using generalized gradient approximation functionals. This article is part of the themed issue 'Multiscale modelling at the physics-chemistry-biology interface'.

Abstract
Ab initio density functional theory (DFT), previously applied primarily at the second-order many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) level, is generalized to selected infinite-order effects by using a new coupled-cluster perturbation theory (CCPT). This is accomplished by redefining the unperturbed Hamiltonian in ab initio DFT to correspond to the CCPT2 orbital dependent functional. These methods are applied to the Be-isoelectronic systems as an example of a quasidegenerate system. The CCPT2 variant shows better convergence to the exact quantum Monte Carlo correlation potential for Be than any prior attempt. When using MBPT2, the semicanonical choice of unperturbed Hamiltonian, plays a critical role in determining the quality of the obtained correlation potentials and obtaining convergence, while the usual Kohn-Sham choice invariably diverges. However, without the additional infinite-order effects, introduced by CCPT2, the final potentials and energies are not sufficiently accurate. The issue of the effects of the single excitations on the divergence in ordinary OEP2 is addressed, and it is shown that, whereas their individual values are small, their infinite-order summation is essential to the good convergence of ab initio DFT.

Abstract
Through comparison with ab initio reference data, we have evaluated the performance of various density functionals for describing pi-pi interactions as a function of the geometry between two stacked benzenes or benzene analogs, between two stacked DNA bases, and between two stacked Watson-Crick pairs. Our main purpose is to find a robust and computationally efficient density functional to be used specifically and only for describing pi-pi stacking interactions in DNA and other biological molecules in the framework of our recently developed QM/QM approach "QUILD". In line with previous studies, most standard density functionals recover, at best, only part of the favorable stacking interactions. An exception is the new KT1 functional, which correctly yields bound pi-stacked structures. Surprisingly, a similarly good performance is achieved with the computationally very robust and efficient local density approximation (LDA). Furthermore, we show that classical electrostatic interactions determine the shape and depth of the pi-pi stacking potential energy surface.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT), in its current local, gradient corrected, and hybrid implementations and their extensions, is approaching an impasse. To continue to progress toward the quality of results demanded by today's ab initio quantum chemistry encourages a new direction. We believe ab initio DFT is a promising route to pursue. Whereas conventional DFT cannot describe weak interactions, photoelectron spectra, or many potential energy surfaces, ab initio DFT, even in its initial, optimized effective potential, second-order many-body perturbation theory form [OEP (2)-semi canonical], is shown to do all well. In fact, we obtain accuracy that frequently exceeds MP2, being competitive with coupled-cluster theory in some cases. Furthermore, this is accomplished within a relatively fast computational procedure that scales like iterative second order. We illustrate our results with several molecular examples including Ne2,Be2,F2, and benzene.

Abstract
A satisfactory account of the van der Waals (vdW) (London dispersion) forces is, in general not possible by the Kohn-Sham method using standard local, semilocal generalized gradient approximation (GGA), or meta-GGA density functionals. The recently proposed range-separated hybrid (RSH) approach, supplemented by second order perturbational corrections (MP2) to include long-range dynamic correlation effects, offers a physically consistent, seamless description of dispersion forces. It is based on a rigorous generalization of the Kohn-Sham method, where long-range exchange and correlation effects are treated by wave function methods, while short-range electron exchange and correlation are handled by local or semilocal functionals. The method is tested on a series of rare gas dimers in comparison with standard wave function theory and density functional theory approaches. In contrast to the most successful exchange correlation functionals, which describe at best the vdW minimum, the RSH+MP2 approach is valid also in the asymptotic region and the potential curve displays the correct 1/R(6) behavior at large internuclear separations. In contrast to usual MP2 calculations, the basis set superposition error is considerably reduced, making RSH+MP2 an ideal tool for exploring the potential energy surface of weakly bound molecular complexes.

Abstract
The performance of the recently proposed version of the reduced multireference (RMR) coupled-cluster (CC) method with singles and doubles (SD), which employs a modest-size configuration interaction wave function as an external source for a small subset of approximate connected three- and four-body cluster amplitudes that are primarily responsible for the nondynamic correlation effects, and which has been perturbatively corrected for the remaining triples along the same line as in the standard CCSD(T) method (Li X., Paldus J.: J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 124, 174101), referred to by the acronym RMR CCSD(T), is being tested by evaluating equilibrium spectroscopic constants for a demanding system of the beryllium dimer, as well as by computing atomization energies for several di- and triatomics. The focus is on the equilibrium properties, since it has been demonstrated earlier that the RMR CCSD method corrects well for the nondynamic correlation in bond-breaking situations. We find that in all the cases we have examined, the RMR CCSD(T) method does in fact improve the performance of CCSD(T) even in the vicinity of the equilibrium geometry. For states possessing a moderate multireference character, the improvement in computed thermochemical properties relative to CCSD(T) amounts to a few kJ/mol, a meaningful amount when striving for chemical accuracy.

Abstract
Potential energy landscapes for homogeneous dimers of methanol and ethanol were calculated using counterpoise (CP) corrected energies at the MP26-311+G(2df,2pd) level. The landscapes were sampled at approximately 15 dimer separation distances for different relative monomer geometries, or routes, given in terms of a relative monomer yaw, pitch, and roll and the spherical angles between the monomer centers (taken as the C atom attached to the O). The 19 different routes studied for methanol and the 22 routes examined for ethanol include 607 CP corrected energies. Both landscapes can be adequately represented by site-site, pairwise-additive models, suitable for use in molecular simulations. A modified Morse potential is used for the individual pair interactions either with or without point charges to represent the monomer charge distribution. A slightly better representation of the methanol landscape is obtained using point charges, while the potential energy landscape of ethanol is slightly better without point charges. This latter representation may be computationally advantageous for molecular simulations because it avoids difficulties associated with long-range effects of point-charge-type models.

Abstract
We have calculated the intermolecular interaction potentials of the methane dimer at the minimum-energy D(3d) conformation using the Hartree-Fock (HF) self-consistent theory, the correlation-corrected second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory, and the density functional theory (DFT) with the Perdew-Wang (PW91) functional as the exchange or the correlation part. The HF calculations yield unbound potentials largely due to the exchange-repulsion interaction. In the MP2 calculations, the basis set effects on the repulsion exponent, the equilibrium bond length, the binding energy, and the asymptotic behavior of the calculated intermolecular potentials have been thoroughly studied. We have employed basis sets from the Slater-type orbitals fitted with Gaussian functions (STO-nG) (n=3-6) [Quantum Theory of Molecular and Solids: The Self-Consistent Field for Molecular and Solids (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1974), Vol. 4], Pople's medium size basis sets of Krishnan et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 72, 650 (1980)] [up to 6-311++G(3df,3pd)] to Dunning's correlation consistent basis sets [J. Chem. Phys. 90, 1007 (1989)] (cc-pVXZ and aug-cc-pVXZ) (X=D, T, and Q). With increasing basis size, the repulsion exponent and the equilibrium bond length converge at the 6-31G** basis set and the 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set, respectively, while a large basis set (aug-cc-pVTZ) is required to converge the binding energy at a chemical accuracy (approximately 0.01 kcal/mol). Up to the largest basis set used, the asymptotic dispersion coefficient has not converged to the destined C6 value from molecular polarizability calculations. The slow convergence could indicate the inefficacy of using the MP2 calculations with Gaussian-type functions to model the asymptotic behavior. Both the basis set superposition error (BSSE) corrected and uncorrected results are presented to emphasize the importance of including such corrections. Only the BSSE corrected results systematically converge to the destined potential curve with increasing basis size. The DFT calculations generate a wide range of interaction patterns, from purely unbound to strongly bound, underestimating or overestimating the binding energy. The binding energy calculated using the PW91PW91 functional and the equilibrium bond length calculated using the PW91VP86 functional are close to the MP2 results at the basis set limit.

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that the dipole moment of the exchange hole can be used to derive intermolecular C(6) dispersion coefficients [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 154104 (2005)]. This was subsequently the basis for a novel post-Hartree-Fock model of intermolecular interactions [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 024101 (2005)]. In the present work, the model is extended to include higher-order dispersion coefficients C(8) and C(10). The extended model performs very well for prediction of intermonomer separations and binding energies of 45 van der Waals complexes. In particular, it performs twice as well as basis-set extrapolated MP2 theory for dispersion-bound complexes, with minimal computational cost.

Abstract
A symmetry-adapted perturbation theory based on Kohn-Sham determinants [SAPT(KS)] and utilizing asymptotically corrected exchange-correlation potentials has been applied to the He2, Ne2, (H2O)2, and (CO2)2 dimers. It is shown that SAPT(KS) is able to recover the electrostatic, first-order exchange, second-order induction, and exchange-induction energies with an accuracy approaching and occasionally surpassing that of regular SAPT at the currently programmed theory level. The use of the asymptotic corrections is critical to achieve this accuracy. The SAPT(KS) results can be obtained at a small fraction of the time needed for regular SAPT calculations. The robustness of the SAPT(KS) method with respect to the basis set size is also demonstrated. A theoretical justification for high accuracy of SAPT(KS) predictions for the electrostatic, first-order exchange, and second-order induction energies has been provided.
