Ordering of biaxial solutes in a smectic solvent

NMR of solutes in nematic and smectic A liquid crystals: the anisotropic intermolecular potential

Orientational order parameters determined from (1)H NMR spectroscopy of solutes in liquid crystals that form both nematic and smectic A phases are used to determine the solute smectic A order parameters and the smectic-nematic coupling term. For the analysis, it is necessary to know the nematic part of the potential in the smectic A phase: various ways of extrapolating parameters from the nematic phase to the smectic phase are explored.

Smectic order parameters via liquid crystal NMR spectroscopy: Application to a partial bilayer smectic A phase

Solute molecules were dissolved in the liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-n-octyloxybiphenyl (8OCB), known to form a partial bilayer smectic-A phase. Through measurement of solutes' and solvent's orientational order parameters via nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and their analysis via a statistical thermodynamic density functional theory, values of the solvent's positional order parameters and solutes' positional-orientational distribution functions were obtained. Near to the transition to the nematic phase, the main positional order parameter of the smectic liquid crystal turned out to be comprised in the interval 0.4-0.6, though the quality of the fittings assuming the phase as nematic all across the temperature range investigated was only slightly worse. This may be ascribed to the looseness of the partial bilayer smectic structure. Solutes were found to preferentially lie in those regions where liquid crystal molecule terminal chains are located.

Rigid probe solutes in a smectic-A liquid crystal: an unconventional route to the latter's positional order parameters

Biphenylene and pyrene were dissolved in the nematic and smectic-A phases of the liquid crystal 4,4'-di-n-heptyl-azoxybenzene and the orientational order parameters of both solutes and solvent measured via proton and deuteron nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy. This new data set was then merged with the one previously obtained, formed by 4,4'-di-chloro-benzene and naphthalene as solutes in the same solvent, and the resulting overall data set analyzed with a statistical thermodynamic density-functional theory to provide positional-orientational distribution functions of the various solutes along with the smectic solvent's positional order parameters.

Solvent smectic order parameters from solute nematic order parameters

In liquid crystals, while the second and fourth rank orientational order parameters characterizing a nematic phase can be experimentally determined via several techniques, there is no straightforward experiment rendering the positional order parameters characterizing a smectic A phase. This work illustrates a novel method to estimate the positional order parameters of a smectogenic liquid crystal solvent from knowledge of the orientational order parameters of a number of solutes dissolved therein. The latter order parameters can be experimentally determined via liquid crystal NMR spectroscopy. These data can be then analyzed with a statistical-thermodynamic density functional theory, whose basic ingredient is a model for solute-solvent intermolecular interactions. Its parametrization and the subsequent fitting procedure eventually permit one to obtain the positional order parameters of the solvent besides the positional-orientational distribution function of the solutes. The method is applied to the smectogen 4,4(')-di-n-heptyl-azoxybenzene, in which the solutes 1,4-dichlorobenzene and naphthalene have been dissolved. With the help of this exploratory practical example, pros and cons of the method are pointed out and further developments prospected.

Smectic, nematic, and isotropic phases in binary mixtures of thin and thick hard spherocylinders

A second-virial Onsager theory, based on Parsons-Lee rescaling and suitably extended to deal with multicomponent systems and smectic phases, has been used to calculate the phase diagram of a collection of binary mixtures of thin and thick hard spherocylinders. In particular, two types of phase diagrams are investigated. First, a number of binary mixtures where the two components have the same total length have been considered; in addition, the phase diagram of a binary mixture where the two components have the same volume has been calculated. For the particles of one of the two components, the length of the cylindrical part and the diameter have always been set equal to 5 and 1, respectively. Spherocylinders of the same total length and different diameter tend to demix considerably as soon as the diameter ratio deviates from unity. This happens especially at high pressures, when at least the phase richer in the thicker component is smectic. In the case where the two components have equal volumes, demixing is further increased due to the disparity not only in particle diameter but also in particle lengths. The incorporation of inhomogeneous layered phases is seen to alter significantly the phase diagrams calculated if only homogeneous phases are allowed, since transitions to a smectic phase often preempt those to a nematic or an isotropic phase. The apparent versatility of the recent experimental techniques suggests that the phase diagram features predicted by the theory might be also observed in real systems.

NMR Determination of Smectic Ordering of Probe Molecules

The NMR spectra of the three solutes ortho-, meta-, and para-dichlorobenzene in the nematic and smectic A phases of the liquid crystals 8CB and 8OCB are analyzed to yield two orientational order parameters for each solute. Extrapolation of the asymmetry in the energy parameters that describe the orientational ordering in the nematic phase are used to provide estimates of the strength of the nematic potential in the smectic A phase. The experimentally determined asymmetry of the orientational order parameters in the smectic A phase is then used in conjunction with Kobayashi-McMillan theory applied to solutes to give information about the smectic A layering and the nematic/smectic A coupling. In both smectic A solvents, the solute smectic coupling constant, tau, is negative (with the origin fixed at the center of the smectic layer) for all solutes. The signs and relative values of tau indicate that the ortho and para solutes favor the interlayer region while the meta solute is more evenly distributed throughout the layers.
