Potential of mean force calculations using ab initio tight-binding molecular dynamics: Application to N–NO2 bond dissociation in DMNA and HMX

Study on phonon spectra and heat capacities of CL-20/MTNP cocrystal and co-formers by density functional theory method

The phonon spectra and heat capacities of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane/1-methyl-3, 4, 5-trinitropyrazole (CL-20/MTNP) cocrystal and co-formers were calculated in the framework of DFT. By analyzing the phonon density of states (DOS), the energy flow directions and trigger bonds of cocrystal and co-formers have been obtained and the microscopic physical nature was revealed for thermal decomposition mechanism, detonation performance, and sensitivity. For CL-20/MTNP cocrystal, the phonon number of "doorway" modes and the characteristic vibrational frequencies Δω_d are between those of its co-formers, which can provide the microscopic understanding for the ordering of impact sensitivity at experiment, ε-CL-20 > CL-20/MTNP > MTNP. In CL-20/MTNP cocrystal, more phonons and stronger phonon DOS peaks of CL-20 molecules than those of MTNP molecules mean cocrystal's detonation performance is mainly dominated by CL-20 molecules. The heat capacities obtained by the Debye model rise with elevated temperatures at 0-600 K and the order is ε-CL-20 > CL-20/MTNP > MTNP. Early stages of phase selection in MOF formation observed in molecular Monte Carlo simulations

Metal–organic frameworks (MOF) comprising metal nodes bridged by organic linkers show great promise because of their guest-specific gas sorption, separation, drug-delivery, and catalytic properties. The selection of metal node, organic linker, and synthesis conditions in principle offers engineered control over both structure and function. For MOFs to realise their potential and to become more than just promising materials, a degree of predictability in the synthesis and a better understanding of the self-assembly or initial growth processes is of paramount importance. Using cobalt succinate, a MOF that exhibits a variety of phases depending on synthesis temperature and ligand to metal ratio, as proof of concept, we present a molecular Monte Carlo approach that allows us to simulate the early stage of MOF assembly. We introduce a new Contact Cluster Monte Carlo (CCMC) algorithm which uses a system of overlapping “virtual sites” to represent the coordination environment of the cobalt and both metal–metal and metal–ligand associations. Our simulations capture the experimentally observed synthesis phase distinction in cobalt succinate at 348 K. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case in which the formation of different MOF phases as a function of composition is captured by unbiased molecular simulations. The CCMC algorithm is equally applicable to any system in which short-range attractive interactions are a dominant feature, including hydrogen-bonding networks, metal–ligand coordination networks, or the assembly of particles with “sticky” patches, such as colloidal systems or the formation of protein complexes.

Selective catalytic production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from glucose by adjusting catalyst wettability

The development of highly-efficient catalysts for conversion of glucose and fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great importance. In this work, theoretical simulations form the basis for rational design and synthesis of a superhydrophobic mesoporous acid, that can completely prevent HMF hydration, giving HMF as sole product from full conversion of fructose. Interestingly, the combined superhydrophobic solid acid and superhydrophilic solid base catalysts are very efficient for one-pot conversion of glucose to HMF, giving a yield as high as 95.4 %. The excellent catalytic data in the conversion of glucose to HMF is attributed to the unique wettabilities of the solid acid and base catalysts.

Theoretical prediction of the reaction of s-triazine with nitrate radical: a new possible route to generate oxy-s-triazine

Oxy-s-triazine (OST) is one of the important Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) decomposition products, while it is yet not fully clear how it is formed up to now. The study systematically investigates the reaction of s-triazine (TAZ) with nitrate radical (NO(3)) using computational chemistry methods, for which three entrance channels are devised, resulting in the formation of four isomers of OST. Based on the analysis of the barrier heights and the reaction exothermicities, the pathway to form OST3 through hydrogen atom abstraction and rebound mechanism is likely to be the main channel in the reactions of TAZ with NO(3) radical. Our study puts forward a new possible route to generate OST.
