Detection of unusual ΔHOMO<ΔLUMO relationship in tetrapyrrolic cis- and trans-doubly N-confused porphyrins

Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Porphyrinoid Silver Complexes: Evidence of the Electronic Structure Inversion upon Protonation of the N-Confused Core

We report a systematic investigation of a series of Ag(II) and Ag(III) complexes of porphyrins and their analogues using UV-vis magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies and theoretical calculations. Ag(II) and Ag(III) octaethyl- and tetraarylporphyrins show the usual sign sequence in the Q-band region (i.e., negative to positive intensities with increasing energy) of their MCD spectra, indicative of the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO relationship (ΔHOMO is the energy difference between Michl's a and s orbitals, and ΔLUMO is the energy difference between Michl's -a and -s pair of MOs). In contrast, Ag(II) complexes of β,β'-pyrrole-modified porphyrins (with an effective chlorin-type π-system) and Ag(III) corroles have sign reverse features in the MCD spectra of their Q-band region (ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationships). The Ag(III) complex of N-confused porphyrin shows the ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO relationship in the neutral state and the ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationship in the protonated form.

Designing N-Confused Metalloporphyrin-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into value-added products is promising to alleviate greenhouse gas emission and energy demands. Metalloporphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks (MN4 -Por-COFs) provide a platform for rational design of electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR). Herein, through systematic quantum-chemical studies, the N-confused metallo-Por-COFs are reported as novel catalysts for CO2 RR. For MN4 -Por-COFs, among the ten 3d metals, M = Co/Cr stands out in catalyzing CO2 RR to CO or HCOOH; hence, N-confused Por-COFs with Co/CrN3 C1 and Co/CrN2 C2 centers are designed. Calculations indicate CoNx Cy -Por-COFs exhibit lower limiting potential (-0.76 and -0.60 V) for CO2 -to-CO reduction than its parent CoN4 -Por-COFs (-0.89 V) and make it feasible to yield deep-reduction degree C1 products CH3 OH and CH4 . Electronic structure analysis reveals that substituting CoN4 to CoN3 C1 /CoN2 C2 increases the electron density on Co-atom and raises the d-band center, thus stabilizing the key intermediates of the potential determining step and lowering the limiting potential. For similar reason, changing the core from CrN4 to CrN3 C1 /CrN2 C2 lowers the limiting potential for CO2 -to-HCOOH reduction. This work predicts N-confused Co/CrNx Cy -Por-COFs to be high-performance CO2 RR catalyst candidates. Inspiringly, as a proof-of-concept study, it provides an alternative strategy for coordination regulation and theoretical guidelines for rational design of catalysts.

Metal Complexes of Porphyrinoids Containing Nonpyrrolic Heterocycles

The replacement of one or more pyrrolic building block(s) of a porphyrin by a nonpyrrolic heterocycle leads to the formation of so-called pyrrole-modified porphyrins (PMPs), porphyrinoids of broad structural variability. The wide range of coordination environments (type, number, charge, and architecture of the donor atoms) that the pyrrole-modified frameworks provide to the central metal ions, the frequent presence of donor atoms at their periphery, and their often observed nonplanarity or conformational flexibility distinguish the complexes of the PMPs clearly from those of the traditional square-planar, dianionic, N₄-coordinating (hydro)porphyrins. Their different coordination properties suggest their utilization in areas beyond which regular metalloporphyrins are suitable. Following a general introduction to the synthetic methodologies available to generate pyrrole-modified porphyrins, their general structure, history, coordination chemistry, and optical properties, this Review highlights the chemical, electronic (optical), and structural differences of specific classes of metalloporphyrinoids containing nonpyrrolic heterocycles. The focus is on macrocycles with similar "tetrapyrrolic" architectures as porphyrins, thusly excluding the majority of expanded porphyrins. We highlight the relevance and application of these metal complexes in biological and technical fields as chemosensors, catalysts, photochemotherapeutics, or imaging agents. This Review provides an introduction to the field of metallo-PMPs as well as a comprehensive snapshot of the current state of the art of their synthesis, structures, and properties. It also aims to provide encouragement for the further study of these intriguing and structurally versatile metalloporphyrinoids.

Creation from Confusion and Fusion in the Porphyrin World─The Last Three Decades of N-Confused Porphyrinoid Chemistry

Confusion is a novel concept of isomerism in porphyrin chemistry, delivering a steady stream of new chemistry since the discovery of N-confused porphyrin, a porphyrin mutant, in 1994. These days, the number of confused porphyrinoids is increasing, and confusion and associated fusion are found in various fields such as supramolecular chemistry, materials chemistry, biological chemistry, and catalysts. In this review, the birth and growth of confused porphyrinoids in the last three decades are described.

Chirogenesis in Zinc Porphyrins: Theoretical Evaluation of Electronic Transitions, Controlling Structural Factors and Axial Ligation

In the present work, sixteen different zinc porphyrins (possessing different meso substituents) with and without a chiral guest were modelled using DFT and TD-DFT approaches in order to understand the influence of various controlling factors on electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Organometallic Group 11 (CuIII , AgIII , AuIII ) Complexes of a trans-Doubly N-Confused Porphyrin: An "Expanded Imidazole" Structural Motif

Complexation of group 11 metal cations with an α-bis(phenylthio)-substituted trans-doubly N-confused porphyrin (trans-N₂ CP_SPh : 4) afforded a series of square-planar trivalent organometallic complexes (i.e., Cu-H4, Ag-H4, and Au-H4). The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes revealed highly planar core geometries along with the presence of peripheral amine and imine nitrogen sites of the pyrrolic moieties. NMR, UV/Vis absorption, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies suggested the 18 π-electron aromaticity of the complexes. The aromaticity was also fully analyzed by various theoretical methodologies such as nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) and anisotropic induced current density (ACID) calculations. The central metal affects the amphiprotic character of the complexes possessing both pyrrolic amino nitrogen and imino nitrogen atoms at the periphery, which was examined by the photometric titration with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), respectively. The inherent acidity of the complexes was followed in the order; Cu-H4>Au-H4>Ag-H4 and that of basicity was Au-H4>Ag-H4>Cu-H4. The complexes could be considered as an "expanded imidazole" structural motif.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Transition-Metal Complexes of Perfluorophenyl-N-Confused Porphyrins: Inverting Electronic Structure through a Proton

Neutral and deprotonated anionic Ni(II), Pd(II), Cu(II), and Cu(III) complexes of tetrakis(perfluorophenyl)-N-confused porphyrin (PF-NCP) were prepared and investigated by UV-visible and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. As in the previously reported Ni(II) adduct of tetraphenyl N-confused porphyrin, we observe sign reverse (positive to negative intensities with increasing energy) features in the MCD spectra of the neutral Ni(II), Pd(II), and Cu(II) complexes of PF-NCP, which is indicative of rare ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationships. Upon deprotonation of Ni(II), Pd(II), and Cu(II) complexes, these features revert to those of more typical porphyrin MCD spectra consistent with a ΔHOMO > ΔLUMO condition. The Cu(III) PF-NCP complex shows features similar to those of the deprotonated divalent metal systems. Spectroscopic features in all target complexes as well as previously published metal-free and Ni(II) NCP systems were correlated with the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. Calculation data are consistent with the tautomeric rearrangement of the electronic structures of NCP cores playing dominant roles, with smaller contribution from the central metal ions in the observed optical and magneto-optical properties. This is true for all described NCP systems to date, as they affect the stabilization/destabilization of the N-confused porphyrin-centered Gouterman orbitals.

Expanded, Contracted, and Isomeric Porphyrins: Theoretical Aspects

The use of cyclic polyene perimeter-model approaches, such as Gouterman's four-orbital model and Michl's perimeter model, to analyze trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of expanded, contracted, and isomeric porphyrins is described with an emphasis on the use of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to validate the results of TD-DFT calculations. Trends in the electronic structures and optical properties of isomeric porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of porphycenes, corrphycenes, hemiporphycenes, isoporphycenes, N-confused and neoconfused porphyrins, and norroles, whereas those of ring-contracted porphyrins are examined by comparing the properties of subporphyrins, triphyrins, and vacataporphyrins. The ring-expanded compounds that are examined include cyclo[n]pyrroles, [22]pentaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1), sapphyrins, smaragdyrins, isosmaragdyrins, orangarins, ozaphyrins, [26]hexaphyrins(1.1.1.1.1.1), rubyrins, rosarins, amethyrins, isoamethyrins, bronzaphyrins, and doubly N-confused hexaphyrins.

Combined MCD/DFT/TDDFT Study of the Electronic Structure of Axially Pyridine Coordinated Metallocorroles

A series of metallocorroles were investigated by UV-vis and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies. The diamagnetic distorted square-pyramidal main-group corrole Ga(tpfc)py (2), the diamagnetic distorted octahedral transition-metal adduct Co(tpfc)(py)2 (3), and paramagnetic distorted octahedral transition-metal complex Fe(tpfc)(py)2 (4) [H3tpfc = tris(perfluorophenyl)corrole] were studied to investigate similarities and differences in the electronic structure and spectroscopy of the closed- and open-shell metallocorroles. Similar to the free-base H3tpfc (1), inspection of the MCD Faraday B-terms for all of the macrocycles presented in this report revealed that a ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO [ΔHOMO is the energy difference between two highest energy corrole-centered π-orbitals and ΔLUMO is the energy difference between two lowest energy corrole-centered π*-orbitals originating from ML ± 4 and ML ± 5 pairs of perimeter] condition is present for each complex, which results in an unusual sign-reversed sequence for π-π* transitions in their MCD spectra. In addition, the MCD spectra of the cobalt and the iron complexes were also complicated by a number of charge-transfer states in the visible region. Iron complex 4 also exhibits a low-energy absorption in the NIR region (1023 nm). DFT and TDDFT calculations were used to elaborate the electronic structures and provide band assignments in UV-vis and MCD spectra of the metallocorroles. DFT and TDDFT calculations predict that the orientation of the axial pyridine ligand(s) has a very minor influence on the calculated electronic structures and absorption spectra in the target systems.
