Deep-UV absorption and Rayleigh scattering of carbon dioxide

Timescales for Prebiotic Photochemistry Under Realistic Surface Ultraviolet Conditions

Ultraviolet (UV) light has long been invoked as a source of energy for prebiotic chemical synthesis, but experimental support does not involve sources of UV light that look like the young Sun. Here we experimentally investigate whether the UV flux available on the surface of early Earth, given a favorable atmosphere, can facilitate a variety of prebiotic chemical syntheses. We construct a solar simulator for the UV light of the faint young Sun on the surface of early Earth, called StarLab. We then attempt a series of reactions testing different aspects of a prebiotic chemical scenario involving hydrogen cyanide (HCN), sulfites, and sulfides under the UV light of StarLab, including hypophosphite oxidation by UV light and hydrogen sulfide, photoreduction of HCN with bisulfite, the photoanomerization of α-thiocytidine, the production of a chemical precursor of a potentially prebiotic activating agent (nitroprusside), the photoreduction of thioanhydrouridine and thioanhydroadenosine, and the oxidation of ethanol (EtOH) by photochemically generated hydroxyl radicals. We compare the output of StarLab to the light of the faint young Sun to constrain the timescales over which these reactions would occur on the surface of early Earth. We predict that hypophosphite oxidation, HCN reduction, and photoproduction of nitroprusside would all operate on the surface of early Earth in a matter of days to weeks. The photoanomerization of α-thiocytidine would take months to complete, and the production of oxidation products from hydroxyl radicals would take years. The photoreduction of thioanhydrouridine with hydrogen sulfide did not succeed even after a long period of irradiation, providing a lower limit on the timescale of several years. The photoreduction of thioanhydroadenosine with bisulfite produced 2'-deoxyriboadenosine (dA) on the timescale of days. This suggests the plausibility of the photoproduction of purine deoxyribonucleotides, such as the photoproduction of simple sugars, proceeds more efficiently in the presence of bisulfite.

Interactive Visualization of Atmospheric Effects for Celestial Bodies

We present an atmospheric model tailored for the interactive visualization of planetary surfaces. As the exploration of the solar system is progressing with increasingly accurate missions and instruments, the faithful visualization of planetary environments is gaining increasing interest in space research, mission planning, and science communication and education. Atmospheric effects are crucial in data analysis and to provide contextual information for planetary data. Our model correctly accounts for the non-linear path of the light inside the atmosphere (in Earth's case), the light absorption effects by molecules and dust particles, such as the ozone layer and the Martian dust, and a wavelength-dependent phase function for Mie scattering. The mode focuses on interactivity, versatility, and customization, and a comprehensive set of interactive controls make it possible to adapt its appearance dynamically. We demonstrate our results using Earth and Mars as examples. However, it can be readily adapted for the exploration of other atmospheres found on, for example, of exoplanets. For Earth's atmosphere, we visually compare our results with pictures taken from the International Space Station and against the CIE clear sky model. The Martian atmosphere is reproduced based on available scientific data, feedback from domain experts, and is compared to images taken by the Curiosity rover. The work presented here has been implemented in the OpenSpace system, which enables interactive parameter setting and real-time feedback visualization targeting presentations in a wide range of environments, from immersive dome theaters to virtual reality headsets.

Rayleigh scattering cross sections of argon, carbon dioxide, sulfur hexafluoride, and methane in the UV-A region using Broadband Cavity Enhanced Spectroscopy

Accurate Rayleigh scattering cross sections are important for understanding the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in planetary atmospheres and for calibrating mirror reflectivity in high finesse optical cavities. In this study, we used Broadband Cavity Enhanced Spectroscopy (BBCES) to measure Rayleigh scattering cross sections for argon, carbon dioxide, sulfur hexafluoride, and methane between 333 and 363 nm, extending the region of available UV measurements for all four gases. Comparison of our results with refractive index based (n-based) calculations demonstrates excellent agreement for Ar and CO₂, within 0.2% and 1.0% on average, respectively. For SF₆, our mean Rayleigh scattering cross sections are lower by 2.2% on average relative to the n-based calculation and lie outside the 1-σ measurement uncertainty; however, the results still fall within our 2-σ uncertainty. The measured Rayleigh scattering cross sections for CH₄ are in substantial disagreement (22%) with those calculated from the most recent n-based values in the literature and lie far outside our mean 1-σ uncertainty of 1.6%. Extrapolation of several older index of refraction measurements from visible wavelengths to the UV yields better agreement with our results for CH₄, but the agreement is still generally outside our 1-σ measurement uncertainty. Use of the dispersion relation derived in this work provides significantly improved Rayleigh scattering cross sections for CH₄ in the UV-A spectral region.

Constraints on the Early Terrestrial Surface UV Environment Relevant to Prebiotic Chemistry

The UV environment is a key boundary condition to abiogenesis. However, considerable uncertainty exists as to planetary conditions and hence surface UV at abiogenesis. Here, we present two-stream multilayer clear-sky calculations of the UV surface radiance on Earth at 3.9 Ga to constrain the UV surface fluence as a function of albedo, solar zenith angle (SZA), and atmospheric composition. Variation in albedo and latitude (through SZA) can affect maximum photoreaction rates by a factor of >10.4; for the same atmosphere, photoreactions can proceed an order of magnitude faster at the equator of a snowball Earth than at the poles of a warmer world. Hence, surface conditions are important considerations when computing prebiotic UV fluences. For climatically reasonable levels of CO₂, fluence shortward of 189 nm is screened out, meaning that prebiotic chemistry is robustly shielded from variations in UV fluence due to solar flares or variability. Strong shielding from CO₂ also means that the UV surface fluence is insensitive to plausible levels of CH₄, O₂, and O₃. At scattering wavelengths, UV fluence drops off comparatively slowly with increasing CO₂ levels. However, if SO₂ and/or H₂S can build up to the ≥1-100 ppm level as hypothesized by some workers, then they can dramatically suppress surface fluence and hence prebiotic photoprocesses. H₂O is a robust UV shield for λ < 198 nm. This means that regardless of the levels of other atmospheric gases, fluence ≲198 nm is only available for cold, dry atmospheres, meaning sources with emission ≲198 (e.g., ArF excimer lasers) can only be used in simulations of cold environments with low abundance of volcanogenic gases. On the other hand, fluence at 254 nm is unshielded by H₂O and is available across a broad range of [Formula: see text], meaning that mercury lamps are suitable for initial studies regardless of the uncertainty in primordial H₂O and CO₂ levels. Influence of the UV Environment on the Synthesis of Prebiotic Molecules

Ultraviolet radiation is common to most planetary environments and could play a key role in the chemistry of molecules relevant to abiogenesis (prebiotic chemistry). In this work, we explore the impact of UV light on prebiotic chemistry that might occur in liquid water on the surface of a planet with an atmosphere. We consider effects including atmospheric absorption, attenuation by water, and stellar variability to constrain the UV input as a function of wavelength. We conclude that the UV environment would be characterized by broadband input, and wavelengths below 204 nm and 168 nm would be shielded out by atmospheric CO2 and water, respectively. We compare this broadband prebiotic UV input to the narrowband UV sources (e.g., mercury lamps) often used in laboratory studies of prebiotic chemistry and explore the implications for the conclusions drawn from these experiments. We consider as case studies the ribonucleotide synthesis pathway of Powner et al. (2009) and the sugar synthesis pathway of Ritson and Sutherland (2012). Irradiation by narrowband UV light from a mercury lamp formed an integral component of these studies; we quantitatively explore the impact of more realistic UV input on the conclusions that can be drawn from these experiments. Finally, we explore the constraints solar UV input places on the buildup of prebiotically important feedstock gasses like CH4 and HCN. Our results demonstrate the importance of characterizing the wavelength dependence (action spectra) of prebiotic synthesis pathways to determine how pathways derived under laboratory irradiation conditions will function under planetary prebiotic conditions.

Monte Carlo validation experiments for the gas Cherenkov detectors at the National Ignition Facility and Omega

The gas Cherenkov detectors at NIF and Omega measure several ICF burn characteristics by detecting multi-MeV nuclear γ emissions from the implosion. Of primary interest are γ bang-time (GBT) and burn width defined as the time between initial laser-plasma interaction and peak in the fusion reaction history and the FWHM of the reaction history respectively. To accurately calculate such parameters the collaboration relies on Monte Carlo codes, such as GEANT4 and ACCEPT, for diagnostic properties that cannot be measured directly. This paper describes a series of experiments performed at the High Intensity γ Source (HIγS) facility at Duke University to validate the geometries and material data used in the Monte Carlo simulations. Results published here show that model-driven parameters such as intensity and temporal response can be used with less than 50% uncertainty for all diagnostics and facilities.
