Abstract
Imine and enamine bonds decorate the skeleton of numerous reagents, catalysts, and organic materials. However, it is difficult to isolate at will a single tautomer, as dynamic equilibria occur easily, even in the solid state, and are sensitive to electronic and steric effect, including π-conjugation and H-bonding. Here, using as model Schiff bases generated from salicylaldehydes and TRIS in a set of linear free energy relationships (LFER), we disclose how the formation of either imines or enamines can be controlled and provide a comprehensive framework that captures the structural underpinning of this prediction. This work highlights the potentiality of tailor-made designs en route to compounds with desirable functionality.

Abstract
A review of selected literature data related to intramolecular hydrogen bonding in ortho-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases, ortho-hydroxyaryl ketones, ortho-hydroxyaryl amides, proton sponges and ortho-hydroxyaryl Mannich bases is presented. The paper reports on the application of experimental spectroscopic measurements (IR and NMR) and quantum-mechanical calculations for investigations of the proton transfer processes, the potential energy curves, tautomeric equilibrium, aromaticity etc. Finally, the equilibrium between the intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in amides is discussed.

Abstract
An NMR titration method has been used to simultaneously measure the acid dissociation constant (pKa) and the intramolecular NHO prototropic constant ΔKNHO on a set of Schiff bases. The model compounds were synthesized from benzylamine and substituted ortho-hydroxyaldehydes, appropriately substituted with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups to modulate the acidity of the intramolecular NHO hydrogen bond. The structure in solution was established by 1H-, 13C- and 15N-NMR spectroscopy. The physicochemical parameters of the intramolecular NHO hydrogen bond (pKa, ΔKNHO and ΔΔG°) were obtained from 1H-NMR titration data and pH measurements. The Henderson-Hasselbalch data analysis indicated that the systems are weakly acidic, and the predominant NHO equilibrium was established using Polster-Lachmann δ-diagram analysis and Perrin model data linearization.

Abstract
This work presents a combined experimental and theoretical study on an ortho-hydroxy Schiff base compound, (E)-5-(diethylamino)-2-[(4-propylphenylimino)methyl]phenol. The crystal structure and spectroscopic properties of the compound have been determined by using X-ray diffraction, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques. The electronic structure, vibrational frequencies and electronic absorption spectra have been investigated from the calculative point of view. A relaxed potential energy surface scan has been performed based on the optimized geometry of OH tautomeric form to describe the potential energy barrier belonging to intramolecular proton transfer and to observe the effects of transfer on the molecular geometry. The second-order nonlinear optical properties have been investigated based on the first static hyperpolarizability (β) by using the density functional theory.

Abstract
The ketoenamine-enolimine tautometic equilibrium has been studied by the analysis of aromaticity and electron-topological parameters. The influence of substituents on the energy of the transition state and of the tautomeric forms has been investigated for different positions of chelate chain. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules method (QTAIM) has been applied to study changes in the electron-topological parameters of the molecule with respect to the tautomeric equilibrium in intramolecular hydrogen bond. Dependencies of the HOMA aromaticity index and electron density at the critical points defining aromaticity and electronic state of the chelate chain on the transition state (TS), OH and HN tautomeric forms have been obtained.
