Cooperative activation in ring-opening hydrolysis of epoxides by Co-salen complexes: A first principle study

Theoretical Studies on Bimetallic Salen Complexes Catalyzed Epoxide Hydration: Effects of Metal Centers, Substrates, and Ligands

To provide guiding information for developing efficient and stable catalysts for epoxide hydration, we investigated the mechanism of propylene oxide (PO) to 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The mechanism was identified to follow the cooperative bimetallic mechanism in which a metal-salen complex activated H₂O attacks the middle carbon atom of a metal-salen complex activated PO from the oxygen side of three-membered ring. Analyses reveal that the distortion energy correlates linearly with the barrier, and the hydrogen bonding between H₂O and PO increases from reaction precursors to transition states. A nice linear relationship exists between the ratio of square root of ionic potential to the square of the distance from the metal ion spherical surface to the oxygen atom center of PO. It is demonstrated that the substrates with larger polarizability tend to have lower hydration barriers and the influence of ligands is less than that of metal centers and substrates. Modifying metal ions is the first choice for developing metal-salen catalysts, and metal ions with more formal charges and larger radius are expected to exhibit high activity. These findings shed lights on the mechanism and provide guiding information for developing efficient metal-salen catalysts for epoxide hydration.

Exploring the mechanism and counterion activity regulation in the CoIII(salen)-catalyzed hydration of propylene oxide

CoIII(salen)-X (X = Cl-, OAc-, and OTs-) mediated hydration of propylene oxide (PO) to propylene glycol has been investigated in detail using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two kinds of reaction mechanisms, the concerted and stepwise pathways, were scrutinized. For the eight concerted routes, the cooperative bimetallic route in which the middle carbon atom is attacked by the nucleophilic oxygen atom (route VI-m) was calculated to be the most favorable, and among the three catalysts examined H2O-CoIII-OTs was found to be the most active, due to the strong hydrogen bonding between the nucleophilic H2O and the ring oxygen atom in the epoxides as well as the extra π-π stacking interaction. For the stepwise mechanism which consists of the formation of H2O-CoIII-OH, the ring-opening of PO and propylene glycol formation, our studies reveal that different H2O-CoIII-Xs behave kinetically very similarly in the course of propylene glycol formation, but show a notable difference in the rate of H2O-CoIII-OH formation with Cl- > OAc- > OTs-. The rate ordering with which we rationalize the experimental phenomena well is disclosed to be consistent with the nucleophilicity of the counterions by molecular electrostatic potential, condensed Fukui function and condensed local softness. We show that the nucleophilicity of the counterion determines the favorable mechanism that PO hydration follows.

Asymmetric Ring-Opening of Epoxides Catalyzed by Metal–Salen Complexes

The asymmetric ring-opening of epoxides is an important reaction in organic synthesis, since it allows for the enantioselective installation of two vicinal functional groups with specific stereochemistry within one step from a highly available starting material. An effective class of catalysts for the asymmetric ring-opening of epoxides is metal–salen complexes. This review summarizes the development of metal–salen catalyzed enantioselective desymmetrization of meso-epoxides and kinetic resolution of epoxides with various nucleophiles, including the design and application of both homogeneous- and heterogeneous epoxide-opening catalysts as well as multi-metallic covalent and supramolecular catalytic systems.

Surprisingly facile CO2 insertion into cobalt alkoxide bonds: A theoretical investigation

Exploiting carbon dioxide as co-monomer with epoxides in the production of polycarbonates is economically highly attractive. More effective catalysts for this reaction are intensively being sought. To promote better understanding of the catalytic pathways, this study uses density functional theory calculations to elucidate the reaction step of CO2 insertion into cobalt(III)-alkoxide bonds, which is also the central step of metal catalysed carboxylation reactions. It was found that CO2 insertion into the cobalt(III)-alkoxide bond of [(2-hydroxyethoxy)Co(III)(salen)(L)] complexes (salen = N,N"-bis(salicyliden-1,6-diaminophenyl)) is exothermic, whereby the exothermicity depends on the trans-ligand L. The more electron-donating this ligand is, the more exothermic the insertion step is. Interestingly, we found that the activation barrier decreases with increasing exothermicity of the CO2 insertion. Hereby, a linear Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relationship was found between the activation energy and the reaction energy.

Mini-ISES identifies promising carbafructopyranose-based salens for asymmetric catalysis: Tuning ligand shape via the anomeric effect

This study introduces new methods of screening for and tuning chiral space and in so doing identifies a promising set of chiral ligands for asymmetric synthesis. The carbafructopyranosyl-1,2-diamine(s) and salens constructed therefrom are particularly compelling. It is shown that by removing the native anomeric effect in this ligand family, one can tune chiral ligand shape and improve chiral bias. This concept is demonstrated by a combination of (i) x-ray crystallographic structure determination, (ii) assessment of catalytic performance, and (iii) consideration of the anomeric effect and its underlying dipolar basis. The title ligands were identified by a new mini version of the in situ enzymatic screening (ISES) procedure through which catalyst-ligand combinations are screened in parallel, and information on relative rate and enantioselectivity is obtained in real time, without the need to quench reactions or draw aliquots. Mini-ISES brings the technique into the nanomole regime (200 to 350 nmol catalyst/20 μml organic volume) commensurate with emerging trends in reaction development/process chemistry. The best-performing β-d-carbafructopyranosyl-1,2-diamine-derived salen ligand discovered here outperforms the best known organometallic and enzymatic catalysts for the hydrolytic kinetic resolution of 3-phenylpropylene oxide, one of several substrates examined for which the ligand is "matched." This ligand scaffold defines a new swath of chiral space, and anomeric effect tunability defines a new concept in shaping that chiral space. Both this ligand set and the anomeric shape-tuning concept are expected to find broad application, given the value of chiral 1,2-diamines and salens constructed from these in asymmetric catalysis.

A concise review of computational studies of the carbon dioxide–epoxide copolymerization reactions

The production of polycarbonates from carbon dioxide and epoxides is an important route by which waste CO₂ is converted into useful products. This review surveys the use of computational chemistry toward understanding this reaction.
