Microsolvation of the acetate anion [CH3CO2-(H2O)n, n= 1–3]: A photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio computational study

Binding of carboxylate and water to monovalent cations

The interactions of carboxylate anions with water and cations are important for a wide variety of systems, both biological and synthetic. To gain insight on properties of the local complexes, we apply density functional theory, to treat the complex electrostatic interactions, and investigate mixtures with varied numbers of carboxylate anions (acetate) and waters binding to monovalent cations, Li+, Na+ and K+. The optimal structure with overall lowest free energy contains two acetates and two waters such that the cation is four-fold coordinated, similar to structures found earlier for pure water or pure carboxylate ligands. More generally, the complexes with two acetates have the lowest free energy. In transitioning from the overall optimal state, exchanging an acetate for water has a lower free energy barrier than exchanging water for an acetate. In most cases, the carboxylates are monodentate and in the first solvation shell. As water is added to the system, hydrogen bonding between waters and carboxylate O atoms further stabilizes monodentate structures. These structures, which have strong electrostatic interactions that involve hydrogen bonds of varying strength, are significantly polarized, with ChelpG partial charges that vary substantially as the bonding geometry varies. Overall, these results emphasize the increasing importance of water as a component of binding sites as the number of ligands increases, thus affecting the preferential solvation of specific metal ions and clarifying Hofmeister effects. Finally, structural analysis correlated with free energy analysis supports the idea that binding to more than the preferred number of carboxylates under architectural constraints are a key to ion transport.

Annihilating Actinic Photochemistry of the Pyruvate Anion by One and Two Water Molecules

Photochemical behaviors of pyruvic acid in multiple phases have been extensively studied, while those of its conjugate base, the pyruvate anion (CH₃COCOO^-, PA^-) are less understood and remain contradictory in gaseous versus aqueous phases. Here in this article, we report a joint experimental and theoretical study combining cryogenic, wavelength-resolved negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES) and high-level quantum chemical computations to investigate PA^- actinic photochemistry and its dependence on microsolvation in the gas phase. PA^-·nH₂O (n = 0-5) clusters were generated and characterized, with their low-lying isomers identified. NIPES conducted at multiple wavelengths across the PA^- actinic regime revealed the PA^- photochemistry extremely sensitive to its hydration extent. While bare PA^- anions exhibit active photoinduced dissociations that generate the acetyl (CH₃CO^-), methide (CH₃^-) anions, their corresponding radicals, and slow electrons, one single attached water molecule results in significant suppression with a subsequent second water being able to completely block all dissociation pathways, effectively annihilating all PA^- photochemical reactivities. The underlying dissociation mechanisms of PA^-·nH₂O (n = 0-2) clusters are proposed involving nπ* excitation, dehydration, decarboxylation, and further CO loss. Since the photoexcited dihydrate does not have sufficient energy to overcome the full dehydration barrier before PA^- could fragmentate, the PA^- dissociation pathway is completely blocked, with the energy most likely released via loss of one water and internal electronic and vibrational relaxations. The insight unraveled in this work provides a much-needed critical link to connect the seemingly conflicting PA^- actinic chemistry between the gas and condensed phases.

Spectroscopic observation and ultrafast coherent vibrational dynamics of the aqueous phenylalanine radical

The phenylalanine radical (Phe˙) has been proposed to mediate biological electron transport (ET) and exhibit long-lived electronic coherences following attosecond photoionization. However, the coupling of ultrafast structural reorganization to the oxidation/ionization of biomolecules such as phenylalanine remains unexplored. Moreover, studies of ET involving Phe˙ are hindered by its hitherto unobserved electronic spectrum. Here, we report the spectroscopic observation and coherent vibrational dynamics of aqueous Phe˙, prepared by sub-6 fs photodetachment of phenylalaninate anions. Sub-picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy reveals the ultraviolet absorption signature of Phe˙. Ultrafast structural reorganization drives coherent vibrational motion involving nine fundamental frequencies and one overtone. DFT calculations rationalize the absence of the decarboxylation reaction, a photodegradation pathway previously identified for Phe˙. Our findings guide the interpretation of future attosecond experiments aimed at elucidating coherent electron motion in photoionized aqueous biomolecules and pave way for the spectroscopic identification of Phe˙ in studies of biological ET.
