Abstract
Aromatic metalla-annulenes are important aromatic compounds, research into which has been mainly concentrated on metal-benzenes and their lower homologues. Reports on their superior homologs are rare, and this has greatly limited the systematic study of their properties. In this work, a series of osma-dehydro[11]annulenes with good air and thermal stability were prepared in high yields through a simple [10+1] strategy, by incorporating a metal fragment into conjugated ten-carbon chains in a one-pot reaction. They are the first monometallic aromatic metalla-[n]annulenes with the ring size larger than 6, and their Craig-Hückel hybrid aromaticity is supported by various physical and computational parameters. Besides, these complexes show versatile reactivities, not only giving further evidence for their aromaticity, but also demonstrating their physical and chemical properties can easily be regulated. This work enriches the metalla-aromatic chemistry, and provides a new avenue for the synthesis of large metalla-annulenes with different ring sizes.

Abstract
There is experimental evidence that solid mixtures of the rhodium dimer [Cp*RhCl2]2 and benzo[h] quinoline (BHQ) produce two different polymorphic molecular cocrystals called 4α and 4β under ball milling conditions. The addition of NaOAc to the mixture leads to the formation of the rhodacycle [Cp*Rh-(BHQ)Cl], where the central Rh atom retains its tetracoordinate character. Isolate 4β reacts with NaOAc leading to the same rhodacycle while isolate 4α does not under the same conditions. We show that the puzzling difference in reactivity between the two cocrystals can be traced back to fundamental aspects of the intermolecular interactions between the BHQ and [Cp*RhCl2]2 fragments in the crystalline environment. To support this view, we report a number of descriptors of the nature and strength of chemical bonds and intermolecular interactions in the extended solids and in a cluster model. We calculate formal quantum mechanical descriptors based on electronic structure, electron density, and binding and interaction energies including an energy decomposition analysis. Without exception, all descriptors point to 4β being a transient structure higher in energy than 4α with larger local and global electrophilic and nucleophilic powers, a more favorable spatial and energetic distribution of the frontier orbitals, and a more fragile crystal structure.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to develop a new protective coating formulation for industrial use, using benzodiazepine derivatives as double function additives.
Design/methodology/approach
Benzodiazepine’s derivatives of types (3–5) were prepared and confirmed by infrared, Mass, 1H-Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 13C NMR spectra. The synthesized compound was physically incorporated in the alkyd paint formulation by pebble mill grinding until all particulates are smaller than 20 ums. The prepared coatings were applied by air spray on steel panels. The physical, mechanical characteristics, corrosion resistance and antimicrobial test of the prepared coatings were studied to evaluate the prepared compounds drawbacks.
Findings
The results of the mechanical and physical properties of the paint formulation revealed that the paint formulation incorporating benzodiazepines derivatives 3–5 performed best and improved corrosion-resistance and antibacterial activity tests.
Research limitations/implications
In alkyd paint, heterocyclic compounds are the most used antibacterial additives. Other functionalities of these compounds, such as corrosion inhibitors, might be studied to see if they are suited for these applications.
Practical implications
Because of the activity of various benzodiazepine derivatives, which may be attributable to the presence of some function groups such as sulfonamide aromatic amino NH2 group, and elements such as Sulphur, Nitrogen, Chlorine, in its chemical structure. As a result, paint compositions including these compounds as additives can be used as dual-purpose paint and for a variety of industrial applications.
Originality/value
The research demonstrates how a low-cost paint composition based on synthesized benzodiazepine derivatives 3–5 may be used as a dual-function paint for industrial use.

Abstract
Reactivity descriptors indicate where a reagent is most reactive and how it is most likely to react. However, a reaction will only occur when the reagent encounters a suitable reaction partner. Determining whether a pair of reagents is well-matched requires developing reactivity rules that depend on both reagents. This can be achieved using the expression for the minimum-interaction-energy obtained from the density functional reactivity theory. Different terms in this expression will be dominant in different circumstances; depending on which terms control the reactivity, different reactivity indicators will be preferred.

Abstract
Based on the quantum chemical topology of the modified electron localization function ELFx , an efficient and robust mechanistic methodology designed to identify the favorable reaction pathway between two reactants is proposed. We first recall and reshape how the supermolecular interaction energy can be evaluated from only three distinct terms, namely the intermolecular coulomb energy, the intermolecular exchange-correlation energy and the intramolecular energies of reactants. Thereafter, we show that the reactivity between the reactants is driven by the first-order variation in the coulomb intermolecular energy defined in terms of the response to changes in the number of electrons. Illustrative examples with the formation of the dative bond B-N involved in the BH3 NH3 molecule and the typical formation of the hydrogen bond in the canonical water dimer are presented. For these selected systems, our approach unveils a noticeable mimicking of Edual onto the DFT intermolecular interaction energy surface calculated between the both reactants. An automated reaction-path algorithm aimed to determine the most favorable relative orientations when the two molecules approach each other is also outlined.

Abstract
Lignin is one of the most abundant natural materials around the world, accounting for about a quarter of the woody tissue. In general, it is well known that these highly branched aromatic bio-polymers are formed from the polymerization of p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohols; however, the connection between these structures are still not known in detail. In this work, we have employed electronic structure calculations to investigate local reactivities and details regarding the connectivity between the basic structures of lignin (unmodified mono and dilignols as well as dehydrogenated monolignols). Condensed-to-atoms Fukui indexes, local softness and hard and soft acids and bases principle were employed in the analyses. The results allow identifying reactive sites on the lignin subunits and access details on the synthesis and degradation of this bio-material. In particular, it is possible to identify a strong influence of the dehydrogenation and monomer dimerization on the monolignols reactivities, which activate the O-C4 and C5 positions. Graphical Abstract The local reactivities of lignin subunits were evaluated via DFT calculations.

Abstract
Divalent transition metal complexes [MGlu-Arg (H2O)]H2O and [MGlu-Arg (H2O)]H2O, where M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, Glu = glutamic acid, and Arg = L-arginine, are prepared and characterized using different techniques. DFT and TD-DFT modelling validated and interpreted some experimental results. Weight loss technique reveals efficient corrosion inhibition action of these complexes towards aluminum metal at different temperatures. Our results point to corrosion inhibition through chemical adsorption on the aluminum surface. Additionally, a facile calcination of Co and Cu complexes at 550°C yields nanosized oxides of Co3O4, CoO, and CuO crystalline phases. The complexes show remarkable biological activities towards pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Moreover, in vitro anticancer activity evaluation of these complexes is achieved against hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG-2). The results are correlated with molecular descriptors such as chemical potential and hardness obtained from the frontier orbitals.

Abstract
Synergistic oxidation of ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an effective water treatment for the elimination of organic pollutants. In this study, 23 organic compounds were conducted to study the reaction rate constants during O3-H2O2 oxidation. Then, two- and three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models were established to investigate the factors influencing the reaction rate constants by using multiple linear regression method and comparative molecular similarity index analysis (CoMSIA) method, respectively. Both of the two models showed good performance on predicting the reaction rate constants, the associated statistical indices of 2D-QSAR and 3D-QSAR models were R2 = 0.898 and 0.952, q2 = 0.841 and 0.951, Qext2 = 0.968 and 0.970, respectively. But varied in the influence factors, as for the 2D-QSAR model, three quantum chemical parameters, included dipole moment, the largest change of charge in each atom during the nucleophilic attack, the maximum positive partial charge on a hydrogen atom linked with a carbon atom affected the reaction rate. While in the 3D-QSAR model, the electrostatic field played the most important role in evaluating the reaction rate with the contribution of 35.8%, followed by hydrogen bond acceptor and hydrophobic fields with the contribution of 24.9% and 23.2%, respectively. These two models provided predictive tools to study the influencing factors for the degradation of organics and might potentially be applied for estimating the removal properties of unknown organics in O3-H2O2 oxidation process.

Abstract
A series of novel pyrimidine (2, 3), pyrazole (4, 5), and pyridine (6) derivatives were synthesized using a chalcone-bearing thiophene nucleus (1). The target compounds were synthesized by reaction of compound (1) with urea, thiourea, malononitrile, hydrazine hydrate, and 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine, respectively. Molecular electronic structures have been modeled within density functional theory framework (DFT). Reactivity indices and electrostatic surface potential maps (ESP maps) allow us to establish trends that enable making predictions about chemical characteristics of the newly synthesized molecules and their proton transfer tautomers. Proton transfer is generally more favored in solution than in the gas phase. In acetonitrile, keto-form tautomers and thione-form tautomers become more energetically stable than the corresponding enol or thiol tautomers due to solvent-induced enhancement in the molecular polarity identified by computed dipole moment.

Abstract
In the present work, a new methodology defined for obtaining reactivity indices (philicities) is proposed. This is based on reactivity functions such as the Fukui function or the dual descriptor, and makes it possible to project the information from reactivity functions onto molecular orbitals, instead of onto the atoms of the molecule (atomic reactivity indices). The methodology focuses on the molecules' natural bond orbitals (bond reactivity indices) because these orbitals have the advantage of being localized, allowing the reaction site of an electrophile or nucleophile to be determined within a very precise molecular region. This methodology provides a "philicity" index for every NBO, and a representative set of molecules has been used to test the new definition. A new methodology has also been developed to compare the "finite difference" and the "frontier molecular orbital" approximations. To facilitate their use, the proposed methodology as well as the possibility of calculating the new indices have been implemented in a new version of UCA-FUKUI software. In addition, condensation schemes based on atomic populations of the "atoms in molecules" theory, the Hirshfeld population analysis, the approximation of Mulliken (with a minimal basis set) and electrostatic potential-derived charges have also been implemented, including the calculation of "bond reactivity indices" defined in previous studies. Graphical abstract A new methodology defined for obtaining bond reactivity indices (philicities) is proposed and makes it possible to project the information from reactivity functions onto molecular orbitals. Abstract
We define three new linear response indices with promising applications for bond reactivity using the mathematical framework of τ-CRT (finite temperature chemical reactivity theory). The τ-Fukui kernel is defined as the ratio between the fluctuations of the average electron density at two different points in the space and the fluctuations in the average electron number and is designed to integrate to the finite-temperature definition of the electronic Fukui function. When this kernel is condensed, it can be interpreted as a site-reactivity descriptor of the boundary region between two atoms. The τ-dual kernel corresponds to the first order response of the Fukui kernel and is designed to integrate to the finite temperature definition of the dual descriptor; it indicates the ambiphilic reactivity of a specific bond and enriches the traditional dual descriptor by allowing one to distinguish between the electron-accepting and electron-donating processes. Finally, the τ-hyper dual kernel is defined as the second-order derivative of the Fukui kernel and is proposed as a measure of the strength of ambiphilic bonding interactions. Although these quantities have never been proposed, our results for the τ-Fukui kernel and for τ-dual kernel can be derived in zero-temperature formulation of the chemical reactivity theory with, among other things, the widely-used parabolic interpolation model.

Abstract
In this work, the dual-descriptor is studied in matrix form [Formula: see text] and both coordinates condensed to atoms, resulting in atomic and diatomic (or where applicable, bond) condensed single values. This double partitioning method of the dual-descriptor matrix is proposed within the Hirshfeld-I atoms-in-molecule framework although it is easily extended to other atoms-in-molecules methods. Diagonalizing the resulting atomic and bond dual-descriptor matrices gives eigenvalues and eigenvectors describing the reactivity of atoms and bonds. The dual-descriptor function is the diagonal element of the underlying matrix. The extra information contained in the atom and bond resolution is highlighted and the effect of choosing either the fragment of molecular response or response of molecular fragment approach is quantified. Graphical Abstract Atom and bond condensed dual descriptor matrices and functions are derived from molecular ones using Hirshfeld-I atoms in molecules weight functions.

Abstract
Though QSAR was originally developed in the context of physical organic chemistry, it has been applied very extensively to chemicals (drugs) which act on biological systems, in this idea one of the most important QSAR methods is the 3D QSAR model. However, due to the complexity of understanding the results it is necessary to postulate new methodologies to highlight their physical-chemical meaning. In this sense, this work postulates new insights to understand the CoMFA results using molecular quantum similarity and chemical reactivity descriptors within the framework of density functional theory. To obtain these insights a simple theoretical scheme involving quantum similarity (overlap, coulomb operators, their euclidean distances) and chemical reactivity descriptors such as chemical potential (μ), hardness (ɳ), softness (S), electrophilicity (ω), and the Fukui functions, was used to understand the substitution effect. In this sense, this methodology can be applied to analyze the biological activity and the stabilization process in the non-covalent interactions on a particular molecular set taking a reference compound.

Abstract
By means of the Spin-Polarized Conceptual Density Functional Theory (SP-CDFT), three 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine catalysts based on iron(II), used for polymerization of ethylene, were studied. The catalysts differed by the substituent group, bearing either -H, -NO2 or -OCH3. To date, catalytic activity, a purely experimental parameter measuring the mass of polyethylene produced per millimole of iron per time and pressure unit at a fixed temperature, has not been explained in terms of local hyper-softness. The latter is a purely theoretical parameter designed for quantifying electronic effects; it is measured using the metal atom responsible for the coordination process with the monomer (ethylene). Because steric effects are not relevant in these kinds of catalysts and only electronic effects drive the catalytic process, an interesting link is found between catalytic activity and the local hyper-softness condensed on the iron atom by means of four functionals (B3LYP, BP86, B97D, and VSXC). This work demonstrates that the use of local hyper-softness, predicted by the SP-CDFT, is a suitable parameter for explaining order relationships among catalytic activity values, thus quantifying the electronic influence of the substituent group inducing this difference; the use of only net electric charges does not lead to clear conclusions. This finding can aid in estimating catalytic activities leading to a more rational design of new catalysts via computational chemistry.

Abstract
The highly varying experimental pKa values for 36 arylamines spanning 7 orders of magnitude is carefully examined. Within this framework, a valence condensed-to-atom model for the average ionization energy is introduced and tested. The theoretical approach is connected to orbital Fukui functions directly mapped into semilocal or regional site-specific responses. It is revealed that the average local ionization energies associated with the amino nitrogen atom is linearly correlated to the basicity of the substituted arylamines, properly reproducing the experimental ordering of basicity. The condensed-to-atom descriptor exhibits a high predictive power, providing a new direct reactivity evaluation of significant value.

Abstract
Metal and ligand-based reductions have been modeled in octahedral ruthenium complexes revealing metal-ligand interactions as the profound driving force for the redox-active behaviour of orthoquinoid-type ligands. Through an extensive investigation of redox-active ligands we revealed the most critical factors that facilitate or suppress redox-activity of ligands in metal complexes, from which basic rules for designing non-innocent/redox-active ligands can be put forward. These rules also allow rational redox-leveling, i.e. the moderation of redox potentials of ligand-centred electron transfer processes, potentially leading to catalysts with low overpotential in multielectron activation processes.

Abstract
Translating local electro/nucleophilicities into the language of reactive sites is an appealing theoretical challenge that could be conducive to strengthen the collaborative dialogue between experimentalists and quantum chemists. The usual schemes for such condensation, relying on atomic charges, may however lead to important information loss, due to a sometimes inappropriate averaging of the reactivity anisotropy. In this article, we present instead an approach based on the dual descriptor Δf, which aims at partitioning real space into nonoverlapping reactive domains that feature a constant Δf sign. This strategy enables not only to identify the nucleo/electrophilic regions inside a molecule but also to quantify meaningful properties (mean value, volume, electron population…). Its interest is then illustrated on two specific chemical problems: the measure of σ-holes in the context of halogen bonds, and of the electrophilicity of organic carbocations, casting the light on the versatility of this method.
