A comprehensive electron wavefunction analysis toolbox for chemists, Multiwfn

Analysis of electron wavefunction is a key component of quantum chemistry investigations and is indispensable for the practical research of many chemical problems. After more than ten years of active development, the wavefunction analysis program Multiwfn has accumulated very rich functions, and its application scope has covered numerous aspects of theoretical chemical research, including charge distribution, chemical bond, electron localization and delocalization, aromaticity, intramolecular and intermolecular interactions, electronic excitation, and response property. This article systematically introduces the features and functions of the latest version of Multiwfn and provides many representative examples. Through this article, readers will be able to fully understand the characteristics and recognize the unique value of Multiwfn. The source code and precompiled executable files of Multiwfn, as well as the manual containing a detailed introduction to theoretical backgrounds and very rich tutorials, can all be downloaded for free from the Multiwfn website (http://sobereva.com/multiwfn).

Structural stability and the low-lying singlet and triplet states of BN-n-acenes, n = 1-7

The chemical stability and the low-lying singlet and triplet excited states of BN-n-acenes (n = 1-7) were studied using single reference and multireference methodologies. From the calculations, descriptors such as the singlet-triplet splitting, the natural orbital (NO) occupations and aromaticity indexes are used to provide structural and energetic analysis. The boron and nitrogen atoms form an isoelectronic pair of two carbon atoms, which was used for the complete substitution of these units in the acene series. The structural analysis confirms the effects originated from the insertion of a uniform pattern of electronegativity difference within the molecular systems. The covalent bonds tend to be strongly polarized which does not happen in the case of a carbon-only framework. This effect leads to a charge transfer between neighbor atoms resulting in a more strengthened structure, keeping the aromaticity roughly constant along the chain. The singlet-triplet splitting also agrees with this stability trend, maintaining a consistent gap value for all molecules. The BN-n-acenes molecules possess a ground state with monoconfigurational character indicating their electronic stability. The low-lying singlet excited states have charge transfer character, which proceeds from nitrogen to boron.

Description of Polar Chemical Bonds from the Quantum Mechanical Interference Perspective

The Generalized Product Function Energy Partitioning (GPF-EP) method has been applied to a set of molecules, AH (A = Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F), CO and LiF with quite different dipole moments, in order to investigate the role played by the quantum interference effect in the formation of polar chemical bonds. The calculations were carried out with GPF wave functions treating all the core electrons as a single Hartree-Fock group and the bonding electrons at the Generalized Valence Bond Perfect-Pairing (GVB-PP) level, with the cc-pVTZ basis set. The results of the energy partitioning into interference and quasi-classical contributions along the respective Potential Energy Surfaces (PES) show that the main contribution to the depth of the potential wells comes from the interference term, which is an indication that all the molecules mentioned above form typical covalent bonds. In all cases, the stabilization promoted by the interference term comes from the kinetic contribution, in agreement with previous results. The analysis of the effect of quantum interference on the electron density reveals that while polarization effects (quasi-classical) tend to displace electronic density from the most polarizable atom toward the less polarizable one, interference (quantum effects) counteracts by displacing electronic density to the bond region, giving rise to the right electronic density and dipole moment.
