Near-infrared femtosecond laser ionization of the acetic acid dimer

Coulomb Explosion of Multi-charged Atomic Alkaline Metal Clusters

In the present work, a computational study of the Coulomb explosions of atomic metal clusters of the type X₈²⁺ was carried out, X = (Li-Cs). The work was done within the Kohn-Sham methodology using the Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics approximation. The dominant fission channels were established and the electron bonding patterns were analyzed with the help of the Electron Localization Function (ELF). A simple theoretical model was developed to understand and describe, in a qualitatively way, the main physical mechanism involved in the fission of these multicharged clusters. It has been found that the most possible fragments after explosion are the same considering the dynamics or the thermodynamics results. The bonds breaking and formation are well depicted by the ELF, and the main physical effects are well described by the developed model.

Laser-Induced Electron Transfer in the Dissociative Multiple Ionization of Argon Dimers

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the ionization-fragmentation dynamics of argon dimers in intense few-cycle laser pulses with a tagged carrier-envelope phase. We find that a field-driven electron transfer process from one argon atom across the system boundary to the other argon atom triggers subcycle electron-electron interaction dynamics in the neighboring atom. This attosecond electron-transfer process between distant entities and its implications manifests itself as a distinct phase-shift between the measured asymmetry of electron emission curves of the Ar^{+}+Ar^{2+} and Ar^{2+}+Ar^{2+} fragmentation channels. This letter discloses a strong-field route to controlling the dynamics in molecular compounds through the excitation of electronic dynamics on a distant molecule by driving intermolecular electron-transfer processes.

Detection of Neutral Species in the MALDI Plume Using Femtosecond Laser Ionization: Quantitative Analysis of MALDI-MS Signals Based on a Semiequilibrium Proton Transfer Model

We investigated neutral species in the matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization (MALDI) plume using femtosecond laser ionization spectrometry with simultaneous measurement of the standard MALDI spectrum of the identical MALDI event induced by pulsed UV laser irradiation. The ratio of neutral species in the plume [A]_p/[M]_p (A = phenylalanine (Phe) or alanine (Ala), M = 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB)) was confirmed to be the same as that of the sample mixture in the range of [A]₀/[M]₀ = 4 × 10^-4-1, indicating the validity of the widely adopted approximation [A]_p/[M]_p = [A]₀/[M]₀ in the reaction quotient of the proton transfer reaction MH⁺ + A ⇄ M + AH⁺. An effective parameter representing the extent of thermal equilibrium in the thermal proton transfer model is introduced for the first time. Numerical simulation based on this semiequilibrium model successfully reproduced variations of MALDI signal intensities AH⁺ and MH⁺ with two parameters: the fraction of ionized matrix a ≤ 10^-5 and an effective temperature T = 1200 and 1100 K for Phe/DHB and Ala/DHB systems, respectively. These values show good agreement with those determined previously by different experimental approaches. The extent of thermal equilibrium was determined to be 95% and 98% for Phe/DHB and Ala/DHB systems, respectively, suggesting that the proton transfer reactions almost proceed to their thermal equilibrium.

Spectroscopic and Computational Study of Acetic Acid and Its Cyclic Dimer in the Near-Infrared Region

Anharmonic vibrational analysis of near-infrared (NIR) spectra of acetic acid was carried out by anharmonic quantum chemical calculation in a wide concentration range of its CCl4 solution. By predicting vibrational spectra of acetic acid for the first time over a wide NIR region, it was possible to elucidate the influence of the formation of acetic acid cyclic dimer on its NIR spectrum. Quantum chemical simulations were based on coupled cluster and density functional theory quantum methods. Additionally, Møller-Plesset perturbation theory was employed for the additional calculation of hydrogen bonding stabilization energies. An anharmonic vibrational analysis was performed with the use of generalized second-order vibrational perturbation theory (GVPT2). A hybrid approach was assumed, in which monomeric species was treated by CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ (harmonic approximation) and B3LYP/SNSD (anharmonic approximation) methods. For the cyclic dimer, B3LYP and B2PLYP single and double hybrid functionals, paired with an SNSD basis set, were employed. DFT calculations were augmented with additional empirical dispersion correction. It was found that quantum chemically calculated vibrational modes in the NIR region are in a good agreement with experimental data. The results of anharmonic vibrational analysis were supported by a harmonic shift analysis, for elucidating the very strong anharmonic coupling observed between stretching modes of hydrogen bonded bridge in the cyclic dimer. However, the calculated wavenumbers for combination modes of double hydrogen bonded bridge in the cyclic dimer, which are very sensitive to the formation of hydrogen bonding, were found to be underestimated by quantum chemical methods. Therefore, by band fitting, the wavenumbers and shape parameters for these bands were found, and the modeled spectra were adjusted accordingly. A high accuracy of simulated spectra was achieved, and a detailed analysis of the experimental NIR spectra of acetic acid was possible, with successful identification of numerous experimental bands, including those which originate from concentration effects. It was also found that the main spectral features observed in the NIR spectra of carboxylic acid upon the formation of hydrogen bond should be accounted for combination modes of the stretching and bending vibrations of double hydrogen-bonded bridge in the cyclic dimers of acetic acid.

Communication: Protonation process of formic acid from the ionization and fragmentation of dimers induced by synchrotron radiation in the valence region

The ionization and fragmentation of monomers of organic molecules have been extensively studied in the gas phase using mass spectroscopy. In the spectra of these molecules it is possible to identify the presence of protonated cations, which have a mass-to-charge ratio one unit larger than the parent ion. In this work, we investigate this protonation process as a result of dimers photofragmentation. Experimental photoionization and photofragmentation results of doubly deuterated formic acid (DCOOD) in the gas phase by photons in the vacuum ultraviolet region are presented. The experiment was performed by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer installed at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory and spectra for different pressure values in the experimental chamber were obtained. The coupled cluster approach with single and double substitutions was employed to assist the experimental analysis. Results indicate that protonated formic acid ions are originated from dimer dissociation, and the threshold photoionization of (DCOOD)⋅D(+) is also determined.
