Abstract
While the intensity of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) signals is commonly 104-105 times smaller than that of corresponding IR signals, several kinds of systems display enhanced VCD spectra with g-values (VCD/IR intensity ratio) above 10-3 and even reaching 5 × 10-2 in some exceptional cases. These systems include transition metal and lanthanide complexes, protein and peptide fibrils, short oligopeptide gels, crystalline compounds, gels and solution aggregates of organic compounds. We review the literature on VCD enhancement, focusing on collecting and analyzing data on enhanced g-values. Special attention is given to the mechanisms proposed to produce these effects.

Abstract
Vibrational analysis plays a crucial role in the investigation of molecular systems. Though methodologies like second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) have paved the way to more accurate simulations, the computational cost remains a difficult barrier to overcome when the molecular size increases. Building upon recent advances in the identification of resonances, we propose an approach making anharmonic simulations possible for large-size systems, typically unreachable by standard means. This relies on the fact that, often, only portions of the whole spectra are of actual interest. Therefore, the anharmonic corrections can be included selectively on subsets of normal modes directly related to the regions of interest. Starting from the VPT2 equations, we evaluate rigorously and systematically the impact of the truncated anharmonic treatment onto simulations. The limit and feasibility of the reduced-dimensionality approach are detailed, starting on a smaller model system. The methodology is then challenged on the IR absorption and vibrational circular dichroism spectra of an organometallic complex in three different spectral ranges.

Abstract
The relative stereochemistry of organic molecules can be determined by comparing theoretical and experimental infrared (IR) spectra of all isomers and assessing the best match. For this purpose, we have recently developed the IR spectra alignment (IRSA) algorithm for automated optimal alignment. IRSA provides a set of quantitative metrics to identify the candidate structure that agrees best with the experimental spectrum. While the correct diastereomer could be determined for the tested sets of rigid and flexible molecules, two issues were identified with more complex compounds that triggered further development. First, strongly overlapping peaks in the IR spectrum are not treated adequately in the current IRSA implementation. Second, the alignment of multiple spectra from different sources (e.g. IR and VCD or Raman) can be improved. In this study, we present an in-depth discussion of these points, followed by the description of modifications to the IRSA algorithm to address them. In particular, we introduce the concept of deconvolution of the experimental and theoretical spectra with a set of pseudo-Voigt bands. The pseudo-Voigt bands have a set of parameters, which can be employed in the alignment algorithm, leading to improved scoring functions. We test the modified algorithm on two data sets. The first set contains compounds with IR and Raman spectra measured in this study, and the second set contains compounds with IR and VCD spectra available in the literature. We show that the algorithm is able to determine the correct diastereomer in all cases. The results highlight that vibrational spectroscopy can be a valuable alternative or complementary method to inform about the stereochemistry of compounds, and the performance of the updated IRSA algorithm suggests that it is a powerful tool for quantitative-based spectral assignments in academia and industry.

Abstract
Benchmarking functionals and basis sets for the computational prediction of molecular properties is usually done on very small model systems. Larger organic molecules containing heavier second row atoms are not the typical model structures. We herein present the first survey of basis sets and functionals for the prediction of the IR and VCD spectra of chiral tosylates and sulfinates as we noted drastic deviations between computed harmonic frequencies obtained at B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,p) level of theory and those observed in experimental solution phase IR and VCD spectra. We show that the harmonic frequencies of the asymmetric and symmetric S[double bond, length as m-dash]O stretching modes of tosylates are predicted at significantly too low vibrational frequencies if the employed basis set does not provide higher order polarization functions. The results of our benchmarks show that at least the 6-311G(3df,2dp) basis (or equivalent Dunning and Ahlrichs variants) should be used.

Abstract
Bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione (1) and bicyclo[3.3.1]nona-3,7-diene-2,6-dione (2) have been examined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), which, as for most C2-symmetric systems, exhibits strong VCD signals. In the case of 2, VCD signals are stronger and sharper with several bisignate doublets; for 1, signals are less intense and broader. The VCD and IR spectra are excellently predicted by DFT calculations: only one conformer is present for 2, while for 1, three main conformers, related through concerted skeleton torsional motions are present (two of them being interchanged by C2-rotation). The VCD spectrum shows specific features for the different conformers, such that correct population factors are crucial for reproducing experimental data. Also, the TD-DFT prediction of ECD (electronic circular dichroism) spectra is good. By comparing the spectroscopic signature of the two molecules (both VCD and ECD) and by careful analysis of the theoretical results, the role of the C=C double bond in compound (2) is evidenced. The double bond contributes toward enhancing the CD response both electronically and vibrationally.

Abstract
Raman and Raman optical activity (ROA), IR, and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of (R)- and (S)-pantolactone have been recorded in three solvents. ROA has been employed on water and DMSO solutions, VCD on DMSO and CCl4 solutions. In the last solvent, monomer-dimer equilibrium is present. Due to the low conformational flexibility of the isolated molecule and to the possibility of aggregation, this compound has been used here to test different protocols for computation of the spectroscopic responses taking into account solvent effects. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out together with statistical clustering methods based on collective variables to extract the structures needed to calculate the spectra. Quantum mechanical DFT calculations based on PCM are compared with approaches based on different representations of the solvent shell (MM or QM level). Appropriate treatment of the solvent permits obtaining of good band-shapes, with the added advantage that the MD analysis allows one to take into account flexibility of dimeric structures justifying the broadness of observed bands and the absence of intense VCD couplets in the carbonyl and OH stretching regions.

Abstract
We re-examine the theory of electronic and vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy in terms of the formalism of frequency-dependent molecular polarizabilities. We show the link between Fermi’s gold rule in circular dichroism and the trace of the complex electric dipole–magnetic dipole polarizability. We introduce the C++ code polar to compute the molecular polarizability complex tensors from quantum chemistry outputs, thus simulating straightforwardly UV-visible absorption (UV-Vis)/electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra, and infrared (IR)/vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. We validate the theory and the code by referring to literature data of a large group of chiral molecules, showing the remarkable accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) methods. We anticipate the application of this methodology to the interpretation of vibrational spectra in various measurement conditions, even in presence of metal surfaces with plasmonic properties. Our theoretical developments aim, in the long run, at embedding the quantum-mechanical details of the chiroptical spectroscopic response of a molecule into the simulation of the electromagnetic field distribution at the surface of plasmonic devices. Such simulations are also instrumental to the interpretation of the experimental spectra measured from devices designed to enhance chiroptical interactions by the surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures.

Abstract
In this work, we extend the theoretical framework recently developed for the simulation of resonance Raman (RR) spectra of medium-to-large sized systems to its chiral counterpart, namely, resonance Raman optical activity (RROA). The theory is based on a time-dependent (TD) formulation, with the transition tensors obtained as half-Fourier transforms of the appropriate cross-correlation functions. The implementation has been kept as general as possible, supporting adiabatic and vertical models for the PES representation, both in Cartesian and internal coordinates, with the possible inclusion of Herzberg-Teller (HT) effects. Thanks to the integration of this TD-RROA procedure within a general-purpose quantum-chemistry program, both solvation and leading anharmonicity effects can be included in an effective way. The implementation is validated on one of the smallest chiral molecule (methyloxirane). Practical applications are illustrated with three medium-size organic molecules (naproxen-OCD3, quinidine and 2-Br-hexahelicene), whose simulated spectra are compared to the corresponding experimental data.

Abstract
The trace of tensors that account for chiroptical response of the H2O2 molecule is a function of the HO-OH dihedral angle. It vanishes at 0° and 180°, due to the presence of molecular symmetry planes, but also for values in the range 90-100° of this angle, in which the molecule is unquestionably chiral. Such an atypical effect is caused by counterbalancing contributions of diagonal tensor components with nearly maximal magnitude but opposite sign, determined by electron flow in open or closed helical paths, and associated with induced electric and magnetic dipole moments and anapole moments. For values of dihedral angle external to the 90-100° interval, the helical paths become smaller in size, thus reducing the amount of cancellation among diagonal components. Shrinking of helical paths determines the appearance of extremum values of tensor traces approximately at 50° and 140° dihedral angles.

Abstract
With our new home-built circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) instrument, we measured fluorescence and CPL spectra of the enantiomeric pairs of two quasi-isomeric BODIPY DYEmers 1 and 2, endowed with axial chirality. The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CPL spectra of these atropisomeric dimers are dominated by the exciton coupling between the main π-π* transitions (550-560 nm) of the two BODIPY rings. Compound 1 has strong ECD and CPL spectra (glum =4×10-3 ) well reproduced by TD-DFT and SCS-CC2 (spin-component scaled second-order approximate coupled-cluster) calculations using DFT-optimized ground- and excited-state structures. Compound 2 has weaker ECD and CPL spectra (glum =4×10-4 ), partly due to the mutual cancellation of electric-electric and electric-magnetic exciton couplings, and partly to its conformational freedom. This compound is computationally very challenging. Starting from the optimized excited-state geometries, we predicted the wrong sign for the CPL band of 2 using TD-DFT with the most recommended hybrid and range-separated functionals, whereas SCS-CC2 or a DFT functional with full exact exchange provided the correct sign.

Abstract
The generalised coupled oscillator (GCO) mechanism implies that the stability of the computed VCD sign should be assigned by monitoring the uncertainties in the relative orientation of the GCO fragments and in the nuclear displacement vectors, i.e. not the magnitude of the dissymmetry factor.
