Theoretical investigation of 2-(iminomethyl)phenol in the gas phase as a prototype of ultrafast excited-state intramolecular proton transfer

A DFT/TD-DFT Study on the ESIPT-Type Flavonoid Derivatives with High Emission Intensity

To reveal the influence of different substituents on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and photophysical properties of 4′-N, N-dimethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (DMA3HF), two novel molecules (DMA3HF-CN and DMA3HF-NH2) were designed by introducing the classical electron-withdrawing group cyano (-CN) and electron-donating group amino (-NH2). The three molecules in the acetonitrile phase were systematically researched by applying the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. The excited-state hydrogen bond enhancement mechanism was confirmed, and the hydrogen bond intensity followed the decreasing order of DMA3HF-NH2 > DMA3HF > DMA3HF-CN, which can be explained at the electronic level by natural bond orbital, fuzzy bond order, and frontier molecular orbital analyses. Moreover, we found from the electronic spectra that the fluorescence intensity of the three molecules in keto form is relatively strong. Moreover, the calculated absorption properties indicated that introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN could significantly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band. In summary, the introduction of an electron-donating group -NH2 can promote the ESIPT reaction of DMA3HF, without changing the photophysical properties, while introducing the electron-withdrawing group -CN can greatly improve the absorption of DMA3HF in the ultraviolet band, but hinders the occurrence of the ESIPT reaction.

Theoretical Investigation of Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer and Photoisomerization of 2-(Iminomethyl)phenol

Time-dependent density functional theory and high-level ab initio calculations were performed to investigate the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and subsequent isomerization of 2-(iminomethyl)phenol (IMP). According to the results of the correlated theoretical methods, ESIPT is a barrierless process; subsequently, the isomerization (rotation of the torsion angle) of IMP also readily occurs. Fictitious intermediates are found due to an insufficient theoretical level. The molecular structure of the conical intersection (CI) during the isomerization process is optimized, and its branching plane is characterized. Both the gradient difference vector and the derivative coupling vector are significantly correlated to the C═O and H₂N-C antiparallel stretching coordinates, and the dynamic electron correlation effect is crucial to optimize the molecular structure of the real CI of IMP. The relaxation pathway from the CI in the S₀ state was examined; the dominant pathway proceeds to the trans-keto form of IMP. However, if the C═O and H₂N-C antiparallel stretching mode is sufficiently populated, then the reaction proceeds to the cis-keto form of IMP and can eventually recover to the cis-enol form.

Some Brief Notes on Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding

A review of selected literature data related to intramolecular hydrogen bonding in ortho-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases, ortho-hydroxyaryl ketones, ortho-hydroxyaryl amides, proton sponges and ortho-hydroxyaryl Mannich bases is presented. The paper reports on the application of experimental spectroscopic measurements (IR and NMR) and quantum-mechanical calculations for investigations of the proton transfer processes, the potential energy curves, tautomeric equilibrium, aromaticity etc. Finally, the equilibrium between the intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in amides is discussed.
