Ab initio chemical kinetics of the CH2OO + C2F4 reaction

Pressure and temperature dependent kinetics and the reaction mechanism of Criegee intermediates with vinyl alcohol: a theoretical study

Criegee intermediates (CIs), the key intermediates in the ozonolysis of olefins in atmosphere, have received much attention due to their high activity. The reaction mechanism of the most simple Criegee intermediate CH2OO with vinyl alcohol (VA) was investigated by using the HL//M06-2X/def2TZVP method. The temperature and pressure dependent rate constant and product branching ratio were calculated using the master equation method. For CH2OO + syn-VA, 1,4-insertion is the main reaction channel while for the CH2OO + anti-VA, cycloaddition and 1,2-insertion into the O-H bond are more favorable than the 1,4-insertion reaction. The 1,4-insertion or cycloaddition intermediates are stabilized collisionally at 300 K and 760 torr, and the dissociation products involving OH are formed at higher temperature and lower pressure. The rate constants of the CH2OO reaction with syn-VA and anti-VA both show negative temperature effects, and they are 2.95 × 10-11 and 2.07 × 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 300 K, respectively, and the former is agreement with the prediction in the literature.

Possible atmospheric source of NH2SO3H: the hydrolysis of HNSO2 in the presence of neutral, basic, and acidic catalysts

NH₂SO₃H can directly participate in H₂SO₄-(CH₃)₂NH-based cluster formation, and thereby substantially enhance the cluster formation rate. Herein, the reaction mechanisms and kinetics for the formation of NH₂SO₃H from the hydrolysis of HNSO₂ without and with neutral (H₂O, (H₂O)₂, and (H₂O)₃), basic (NH₃ and CH₃NH₂), and acidic (HCOOH, H₂SO₄, H₂SO₄⋯H₂O, and (H₂SO₄)₂) catalysts were studied theoretically at the CCSD(T)-F12/cc-pVDZ-F12//M06-2X/6-311+G(2df,2pd) level. The calculated results showed that neutral, basic, and acidic catalysts decrease the energy barrier by over 18.1 kcal mol^-1; meanwhile, the product formation of NH₂SO₃H was more strongly bonded to neutral, basic, and acidic catalysts than to the reactants HNSO₂ and H₂O. This reveals that the reported neutral, basic, and acidic catalysts promote the formation of NH₂SO₃H from the hydrolysis of HNSO₂ both kinetically and thermodynamically. Kinetic calculations using the master equation showed that (H₂O)₂ (100% RH) dominate over the other catalysts within the range of 0-10 km altitudes and 230-320 K with its rate ratio larger by at least 2.98 times, whereas HCOOH (3.2 × 10⁹ molecules cm^-3) is the most favorable catalysts at 15 km altitude in the troposphere. Overall, the present results will provide a definitive example that neutral, basic, and acidic catalysts have important influences on atmospheric reactions.

A theoretical study of the addition of CH2OO to hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide and its implications on SO3 formation in the atmosphere

The reaction of hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide (HMHP, HOCH₂OOH) with the simplest Criegee intermediate, CH₂OO, has been examined using quantum chemical methods with transition state theory. Geometry optimization and IRC calculations were performed using the M06-2X, MN15-L, and B2PLYP-D3 functionals in conjunction with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set. Single point energy calculations using QCISD(T) and BD(T) with the same basis set have been performed to determine the energy of reactants, reactive complexes, transition states, and products. Rate coefficients have been obtained using variational transition state theory. The addition of CH₂OO on the three different oxygen atoms in HMHP has been considered and the ether oxide forming channel, CH₂OO + HOCH₂OOH → HOCH₂O(O)CH₂OOH (channel 2), is the most favorable. The best computed standard enthalpy of reaction (ΔH) and zero-point corrected barrier height are -20.02 and -6.33 kcal mol^-1, respectively. The reaction barrier is negative and our results suggest that both the inner and outer transition states contribute to the corresponding overall reactive flux in the tropospheric temperature range (220 K to 320 K). A two-transition state model has been used to obtain reliable rate coefficients at the high-pressure limit. The pressure-dependent rate coefficient calculations using the SS-QRRK theory have shown that this channel is pressure-dependent. Moreover, our investigation has shown that the ether oxide formed may rapidly react with SO₂ at 298 K to form SO₃, which can, in turn, react with water to form atmospheric H₂SO₄. A similar calculation has been conducted for the reaction of HMHP with OH, suggesting that the titled reaction may be a significant sink of HMHP. Therefore, the reaction between CH₂OO and HOCH₂OOH could be an indirect source for generating atmospheric H₂SO₄, which is crucial to the formation of clouds, and it might relieve global warming.

Ab initio kinetics of the C2H2 + NH2 reaction: a revisited study

This work provides a rigorous detailed kinetic study on the C₂H₂ + NH₂ reaction in a wide range of conditions (T = 250-2000 K & P = 1-76000 Torr). In particular, the composite method W1U was used to construct the potential energy surface on which the kinetic behaviors were characterized within the state-of-the-art master equation/Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (ME/RRKM) framework. Corrections of the hindered internal rotation (HIR) treatment and quantum tunneling effect were included. A clear reaction mechanism shift with respect to both temperature and pressure was revealed via detailed kinetic and species analyses. In particular, bimolecular products (i.e., CH₂[double bond, length as m-dash]C[double bond, length as m-dash]NH + H, CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]CNH₂ + H, CH₃CN + H, CH[triple bond, length as m-dash]C· + NH₃ in the decreasing mole fraction order) can be formed directly from the reactants at high temperature and/or low pressure while they can be produced indirectly via intermediates (e.g., ·CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHNH₂(cis), ·CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHNH₂(trans), CH₂[double bond, length as m-dash]C·NH₂,…) at low temperature and/or high pressure. The calculated rate constants are in good agreement with the literature data from ab initio calculations without any adjustment; thus, the proposed temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants, together with the thermodynamic data of the species involved, can be confidently used for modeling NH₂-related systems under atmospheric and combustion conditions.

Ab initio dynamics of hydrogen abstraction from N2H4 by OH radicals: an RRKM-based master equation study

The detailed kinetic mechanism of the N₂H₄ + OH reaction is comprehensively reported for a wide condition range of conditions (i.e., 200–3000 K & 1–7600 Torr) using the CCSD(T)/CBS//M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,2p) level and the RRKM-based master equation rate model.

Detailed kinetics of tetrafluoroethene ozonolysis

The C2F4 + O3 reaction plays an important role in the oxidation process of perfluoroalkenes in the atmosphere. The detailed reaction mechanism was explored using the accurate electronic structure method, CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ. The 1,3-cycloaddition of O3 with C2F4 to form the primary ozonide was found to be the rate-determining step of the oxidation process with a small barrier (i.e., 7.3 kcal mol-1 at 0 K). The temperature- and pressure-dependent behaviors of the title reaction were characterized in the range of 200-1000 K & 0.1-760 Torr using the integrated deterministic and stochastic master equation/Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (ME/RRKM) rate model with the inclusion of the corrections for anharmonicity and tunneling treatments. It is found that the anharmonic effect plays a role in the kinetic behaviors (e.g., lower the rate by a factor of ∼ two at 298 K) while the tunneling correction is insignificant. The total rate constants were found to be pressure-independent under the considered conditions, shown as ktot(T) = 4.80 × 10-23 × T2.69 × exp(-2983.4 K/T) (cm3 per molecule per s), which confirms the latest experimental data by Acerboni et al. (G. Acerboni, N. R. Jensen, B. Rindone and J. Hjorth, Chem. Phys. Lett., 1999, 309, 364-368); thus this study helps to resolve a long-term controversy among the previous measurements. The sensitivity analyses on the derived rate coefficients and time-resolved species mole fraction with respect to the ab initio input parameters were also performed to further understand as well as quantify the kinetic behaviors for the title reaction.
